It sounds a good idea in that Google should charge access for using it - but it's unworkable. Why? The moment Google says 'Pay us to use our service', you'll get all the BigCo's saying 'Pay us to index our site'...
At one point people were willing to pay to use Yahoo, but since Yahoo started charging for listings I haven't seen anyone.
For search engines/directories, it's practically 'make money from advertising or selling the technology'... Richy C.
I bet you know a bit already, just make up the actions for when you 'chop the code', slip a line of code under previous code, kick it into action and the yank it over to the production system. Richy C.
The Register has this article where it gives details that 'XBox Technologies' registered the XBox tradmark in March 1999, while Microsoft has been trying to get it since October 1999. Richy C.
I think Microsoft remembers how it became so big, and just doesn't want any other OS to do the same - hence just 'attack' your biggest competitor and leave all the others alone for the time being.
Looking at his biography doesn't show much (unless you recognise the title of his book - Takedown), an interview with Salon Magazine reveals a bit more. But once you've read the front page of Takedown.com you find out that John Markoff did have a hand in arresting/tracing Kevin Mitnick.
Oh, as well as book it's also a film Richy C.
You might find some more useful information in this list of Phreak URLs - the alt.phreaking FAQ will help shed some light on who was 'Cap'n Crunch' and other 'lore' phreakers.
If you can't whistle at 2600Hz, nor get hold of a suitable whistle, have a look for the link to 'Reorder Tones'.... Richy C.
You're correct - the US telephone companies used a signal at 2600Hz to switch customer lines onto the telephone 'trunk'.

The 'communities', I feel belong to are mainly Slashdot and The Open Directory Project (I'm an editor there).
Why? Mainly because the people there are funny, like the sort of things I like, and we can allow have 'input' onto the site -/. has comments and moderation, ODP has its internal editor forums, editing the listings and a good 'community'.
Communities happen - if you try and 'force' it, they just won't work... IMHO
You'd think the magnetic fields would mess up electronics and other items that rely on magentic items wouldn't you? But have a think - power stations use electronics and computers don't they? They also have v.v.v.big magnets in the turbines/generators. So why don't their systems get corrupted?
Simple - insulation. Add wads of lead/concreate (okay, can't use that in this situation) or thick clumps of wires to help 'reduce' the magnetic fields.
Don't forget that the train itself will probably be computer controlled and the train company will have to take into account passengers with pacemakers (pacemakers and radio/magentic fields don't get on) - so don't worry about your laptop.
Basically, it appears as if the entire subnet the Microsoft DNS servers were hosted on has just 'disappeared' making microsoft.com, msn.com, hotmail.com, passport.com et al unavailable. Sites hosted on other domains (such as microsoft.co.uk are still available). Direct IP addresses are stated in the article if you _have_ to visit Microsoft.com
First either find a glue that stays 'tacky' over long period of times, or get a little plastic bag, put glue in it, and seal it.
Now stick that on the inside of the envelope, and fold the top over - the idea being that when the junkmailers automatic enveloper-cutter comes across it, the contents of the envelope literally gums up the works.
If you put on the back, 'Warning contains glue - please remove me from ALL mailing lists', it'll also prompt them to actually read the envelopes before putting them in their systems. You did warn them, so you can't be held responsible, and you also asked to be removed from the mailing list as well...

You are correct - we just need a monolith to make Jupiter _implode_ (it didn't explode/blow up remember - it contracted by all its gas being made into heavier chemicals, collapsed and became a star). Richy C.
They say that if you don't accept the job, they'll dismiss you. But somehow I don't think an Industrial Tribunal/Court Action would accept 'Turned down promotion' as a valid reason for your sacking. If anything, now they've 'threatened' you, they are probably unable to sack you for a good year or so. If they do, pull 'em into court and cite this as an 'ultra motive'.
True - never ever respond to a spammer, you just validate your address. However, respond to abuse@[spammers isp] and you'll hopefully just the spammer cut off.
Use a formmail feedback form instead of a mailto: link (it'll be appreciated by people who haven't intergrated their mail client with their browser), and if you want to have you email address on display - mangle it.
Try replacing the @ with a small image, with the character code 64 (which is the code for @), splitting it into a three column table (ie [me][@][domain.tld]).
