    The most common reason for using "upgraded" versions of software, particularly Microsoft office productivity packages, is for:

    1. Compatability with everyone else that upgrades or has already upgraded
    2. Because the vendor (in your example, Microsoft) ceases to sell the older, feature-complete, products

    Oh wait, did I say sell? I meant rent.

    Except if the server gets a virus. Then you lose everything.

    In a business environment, you have a backup/restore infrastructure in place even with multitudes of servers. It would be very easy to do this with this so-called basement server.

    Did you even look at the images on the web site? Nope - you didn't click the link. There are the usual dumbed-down apps that you need in a PDA. Also, how do you KNOW that multithreading isn't useful in a PDA in the near future? I'm sure someone said the same thing about larger-scale computing systems in the past....

    Actually, Visio is a keen tool. I would use a Linux alternative, but they all kind of suck and don't export to Visio - which everyone else in the office uses.

Linux (BSD, etc) is for running ftp/http/nntp/dns/mail/ntp/smb/print/etc/etc servers, research systems, military applications, office desktops, routers, firewalls, learning unix, systems/application/web development AND playing mp3s, games, napster, pr0n, etc.

    "Nix gurus" don't necessarily have time to check for, download, and install every single RPM. I see this as a very valuable tool for some companies (definitely NOT individuals). It's something I can pay for and purchase - which is usually how businesses operate. Now, as far as automatic updates to production systems go, I have to say a big NO to that. I just get visions of hellish late nights trying to figure out WTF RedHat just installed....

    Did you know that for every 1 lb of grain that could be used to feed a human, it takes 12 lbs of grain to feed a bovine? Know how much water it takes to raise cattle (including growing all of that extra grain)?

    Sadly, our less-than-century-old infatuation with eating like kings and queens will kill not only ourselves but our species. I truly don't believe that there is any turning back until we realize that -woops- our gluttony is bad for our bodies and our environment.
