as far as blaming MS goes, read the EULA. They can make your computer blow up, destroying a city in the process taking out millions of lives and not be responsible for a thing.

That isn't true. How about this:

By reading this comment (or clicking this box, or opening this package, etc) you give me the right to kill you. Now, when I'm holding the smoking gun, I'll have a hard time staying out of jail.

IIRC, Dr. Kevorkian made his patients sign documents disclaiming his actions. Wasn't he convicted? I really can't remember, I wasn't really following it very closely...

Sigh. You shouldn't talk about places you've never been to. That's what they do in Russia.

Seriously though, in my experience, the only people who ever say stuff like this are:

    1) People who have never been on acid.
    2) People who are always on acid.

Please don't take this as a flame, but it just kinda strikes me as the "It tastes like chicken" crap. Whenever someone said this to me, it's always been disgusting, and not in the least bit like chicken. The only thing that tastes like chicken is chicken. The only thing like a trip is a trip.

Then people in villages/towns can stop working to feed themselves, choking on smoke from cooking fires, collecting water from pumps, etc. and get jobs that support higher living conditions. They will have better health conditions, so they don't need to have big families to look after them when they get older. Women will be educated and can make their own choices about how many children they bear.

I wish I paid better attention in high school global history, but here goes..

IIRC, birth rates in developing countries go in 3 stages. Poor countries have a high birth rate but also a high death rate, the birth rate is required to keep the population up and parents needed lots of kids to ensure someone would survive to take care of them when they got old. As these nations develop, the death rate drops -- but the birth rate stays stable. This causes problems with overpopulation and a shortening of resources. After this the birth rate drops down to a lower level, and remains there (if all goes well), similar to what it is now in developed countries.

The problem is, education is critical at stage 2, otherwise these countries have a nasty tendancy to drop back to stage 1, instead of moving on to stage 3. This is also the most expensive period (large population, expected to actually grow old) and these countries can't rely solely on foreign aid, and even if they can, it doesn't always last long enough to push them to stage 3.

At least, that's how I remember it. Combine that with the fact that the leaders of these countries are more interested in using their aid money to buy tanks and statues of themselves than investing in education, food, and birth control. Some of these countries, in an attempt to be reasonable, use this money on infrastructure. The infrastructure is required, but not at that point in the country's development. Education and resource allocation are more importand than roads at this point.

Since the people these supplies go to don't speak english, the suppliers often put pictures of the contents on the box so people know what they're getting. Hrmm..

Heh, yeah I remember almost dying from laughter when I bought an original "In God We Trust, Inc." tape by the Dead Kennedys. Unfortunately, I lost it. The tape was only about 15 minutes long, so the entire album was on one side. Printed on the other side was (I can't remember the exact wording): "Home recordings are killing record profits. We left this side blank so you can help do your part."

A lot of independant labels do this. Look on the back of compilation CD's from some of these and you will often see something to the effect of "Pay no more than $5 for this CD!". I seem to remember this the most on an old Fat comp I bought at a nofx concert for $2 (thats $2 canadian too :). I saw it later at the record store for $14.99.

Have you tried running Windows continuously for more than a day without rebooting? Methinks you are definatly streaching the bounds of credibility here sirrah!

Before I get started, I should say that I dislike windows as much as anyone, but this I have to disagree with. Honestly. I know Windows' reputation for crashing, but I don't believe that it's Microsoft's fault, mostly. I'm fairly certain that 90% of the problems I've had were driver related.

I don't use Windows at home, but I do (grudgingly) use windows at work. However, this box I'm typing on right now (running 95 release something-or-other) often has an uptime of over a week. Admittedly, being proud of a 7 day uptime is laughable, but still, it's hardly crashing on a daily basis. My other work computer (NT4) has been up continuously for nearly a month. After installing a cheap PCMCIA drive in the 95 box, it crashed several times a day (read: 10+). Removed the drive, problem solved.

Every computer here uses high quality hardware with reliable drivers, and it shows in the stability of the computers. So, I'm fairly certain these problems most people have are due to companies releasing shoddy drivers. It doesn't matter what OS you're using, if your drivers are buggy, it'll hurt the system.

I'm a CS student in university, and I see this all the time. Nothing irritates me more than the people in the classes who believe they know more than the professors, and insist on pointing out every last error they make, just to show how smart they are. Either that, or they take every opportunity possible to plug program Foo or BarOS. Not only does it irritate the rest of the class, but the profs as well.

Make sure this isn't you, and you'll go a lot further with this. Linux in the class is good, but my way or the highway is bad.
