  1. Re:Ignition not economical on Laser Fusion Passes Major Hurdle · · Score: 1

This is more than that, this is the first time controlled gain in a target will be achieved. As you say, you can already get fusion going without many problems, but getting more energy out than you put in is the hard bit, and that's why this is a significant step.

  2. Re:Terminology ? on Laser Fusion Passes Major Hurdle · · Score: 5, Informative

Ignition means more fusion energy released than laser energy in. Yes, there are issues in scaling it up, but none that are known to be insurmountable. Already there have been experiments to look at target injection (a 2 GW power plant would be at the 5 - 10 Hz region), high rep-rate lasers (Mercury is an example of a high power, high rep-rate laser) and the lining up of the laser in this situation requires less precision than that of anti-missile systems that are around.

Also the Hohlraum approach is unlikely to be used in a power-plant, as it doesn't give the biggest energy gains, so this is basically a significant step towards projects such as HiPER. If NIF achieves success in ignition as is widely expected the money should be around for projects like HiPER.

  4. Dumb on Game Endings Going Out of Style? · · Score: 1

Another dumb article proclaiming the death of something. Counter-examples would include Half-Life 2 and the episodes, and single player in Modern Warfare. In fact Modern Warfare 2 is quite short, this seems to be the way many mass-market games are now going. And really it's not that hard to get the ending in SMG (as opposed to 120 stars). Some people don't have time to play all the games they want (myself included), so I try to be selective so the games I do play so I get a conclusion to the story. On the other hand I didn't like Bioshock so much, so didn't complete it, this is no different to the situation in the past.

What? There are a million and one things that could happen to a nice shiny laptop while travelling, if your data is that important it's pretty stupid not to backup, especially before travelling.

I'm not a complete linux n00b but I've never got my ATi card (R600) working with 3D acceleration, I'm lucky to get smooth 2D graphics. The current version of openSUSE completely locks up after installation due to the graphics driver. For hardware 2 years old it shouldn't be this hard, but good job to those working on this and ATi for opening up the specs.

Oxford is definitely worth a visit, and the steampunk exhibition that's on in the Museum of the History of Science should fill your 'geek' critea.
