the real clincher, I think, is this: If God is both all-knoing AND omnipotent, what is the point of anything in existance? Those two elements combined seem to imply that nothing spontaneous ever happens, since God both knew it would happen and could have changed it (but if he changes it, he knew ahead of time that he was going to do that).
We're just going through the motions, it would seem.
I live in a country that may have completely lost hope for peace. My son runs around with children of a different race (lets just say they're not Jewish, and yes, we are). It's hard. Really hard. Especialy when food supplies run low, or a sniper picks off a friend you've known for many years. Its also hard when 90% of the people surrounding this country are 'determined to drive us into the sea'. What makes it even more difficult is that we share many of the same holy lands. The country I am refering to is Israel. Hope for peace seems to have vanished here because of deep-seated hatred and changes in leadership. This is very hard, and I keep asking myself if maybe I should just give up and be 'put in my place'?"
I am well aware that once I do something like this, I'll probably begin to lose respect for myself and my heritage, because for me it will mean the loss of my freedom. I've never liked having to avoid standing next to windows, and for a reason. But this freedom keeps costing me a hard price of being 'in mortal danger'.
So, here I am, asking the Slashdot community. What can I do?
This sounds like the story we saw a while back about neurologists becoming worried that people using grafitti on palms were losing their ability to write normally. It even had quotes from people, saying things like, "I looked down with shock - I had written the entire sentence over the same spot!"
It was a satire of course, and I thought it was hilarious. Some people were taken in though, which I suppose just made it funnier.
If these extra senses were added in the future, would you change your answer?
To play devil's advocate: I think to those that want to restrict violence on TV, it is irrelevant whether viewers know it is real or not. The sticking point for them is that connections are formed in the viewers' minds which make them more likely to commit violence in the future.
In A Clockwork Orange, Alex was forced to watch a lot of violence, and the result was that an association was formed (I'm not real clear on how) that made him sick every time the though crossed his mind after that.
I remember a game that probably every high school international-relations or economics type class has played a variation of.
The class breaks up into groups. Each group is told that if they all make decision A, the entire class will win, say, 100 points each toward their grade. However, if even one group makes a decision other than A, everyone who chose A gets nothing, and the group choosing the highest value gets 110 points each.
If everybody trusts everyone else and does what they promised, the whole class walks away with 100 points each. But what always happens is that some asshole will ruin it for the rest of the group, which is the whole point of the excercise.
It's true that exposing security problems gets them fixed much more quickly. However, there's a downside. While the holes keep getting plugged, the situation is the same at any given time:
anyone can look at the advisory reports and find the latest exploit, which will likely work in most places they care to try it.
This step by bind is a good idea - it dampens the effect of that downside, but the source is still out there for people to see and fix. It's not perfect, but the preceding scenario certainly isn't perfect either.
There should be a project that starts with the codename "Phoenix", branches off of it, and returns to Phoenix for every.0 release in its development cycle, in a never-ending cycle of rebirth.
Or just know that if you run away, they're going to look for clues because they might possibly be concerned, or at least curious. If you're worried they'll see your poetry, why in the world, even without the benefit of hindsight, would you leave it in you locker?
that makes no sense. Right now, I could rip a cd (they're encoded in stereo anyway, unless you mean the new Dvd audio or sacd formats) and send it over a 100BaseT ethernet pretty damn fast.
One benefit of outputs like this would be that you could rip the sound of a concert dvd, or one of the new music formats, retaining the 5.1 channel separation, and compress it with a format like ogg vorbis, and then play it later over your digital sound card. Which is _exactly_ what I plan on doing.
What I'd really like is a sound card that does no analog processing and has coaxial and optical outputs for dolby digital(AC3) and possibly DTS streams. I've got an audio system that can take it from there.
Besides DVD support, I'd also like the sound card (or the drivers for it) to support the OpenAL 3d audio standard - besides support for games, there are other uses. I am writing software for data visualization, and that data has an audio component. 3d sound support would be a great addition to the current OpenGL app I have right now.

As if it would be remotely possible to, starting today, keep encryption out of the hands of terrorists.

yeah, ok that's what I meant to say
I think we are doomed to see one of these remarks every time there is a story that has something to do with some kind of math problem/puzzle. Oh well.
That's just the trouble these days. Damn heathen scientists playing God, messing with our orbit like they knew what they was doin.
It'll lead to nothing but trouble I tell you...
*grumble grumble*...
forgive me, I only saw the movie one time, and that was several years ago.
this forces me to ask:

He said Air _Farce_
A Farce is a charade, or pointless excercise in politics, or a drama played out in reality. For example, a high school student council.
I like it the way it was originally.
Calvin and Hobbes had it all figured out :-)

It's a pretty twisted lesson, really.

maybe I'll moderate it down because I don't like your attitude

heh. That's good :-)
they're not even a real planet anyway.
could that person really not tell this was a joke?
:, -, (,
that's sad, as in
:-(
or the power of large people in stupid groups :-(
oops...

even weirder is the very thought of ever hearing those words from the likes of microsoft.
there are two problems with that card:
1. it is too expensive - especially if you want the live platinum, for it's s/pdif outputs. This wouldn't be so bad if not for the other problem...
2. every sound that travels through the card is resampled to 48Khz, and then back to the orignial rate. This muddies up the sound.
that makes no sense. Right now, I could rip a cd (they're encoded in stereo anyway, unless you mean the new Dvd audio or sacd formats) and send it over a 100BaseT ethernet pretty damn fast.
