    In Carl Sagan's book Contact, Dr. Ellie Arroway mathematically proved that Pi, calculated out to some huge number, had a series of 1 and 0 that when arranged in a raster, formed a circle, supposedly showing that the universe was not an accident.

    While this is obviously fiction, is there any Mathematical equation, theorem, or any other aspect of Math that makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up or otherwise cause you to wonder?

  7. Hmm...considering that Stutnex destroyed gazillion of dollars of nuclear related stuff, I"m not too sure about that. Sure, it was deliberate, but it was software and it did destroy stuff. Who codes elevator controls?

    But, you are right. No certifications, tests, or anything else really and even if there were, all they can test is if you know this or that command in this or that language.

    I have a little bit of electrical experience. I can wire a house, change batteries, and plug shit in like nobodies business.

    A few weeks ago I interviewed for an Electrical Engineering position. I couldn't believe it when they asked me nothing but Electrical Engineering questions. Didn't they know I knew how to program in .NET?

    How do I break into a field in which I have absolutely no training or other qualifications?

    Even the IPCC admits this.

    First, a senior developer should be mentoring others, managing projects, be involved in architecture, probably a little database, and of course build management.

    If you want to encrypt something, use a commercial package. You are wasting the company's money if you are writing your own encryption software.

    The Wheel is available in many variations. No need to make a new one.

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but if I'm paying a developer loads of money, I don't want them re-inventing a fucking sort algorithm. Use the provided utilities and be done with it. How it works is irrelevant.

    Most probably aren't making it through the HR filter because you've put so many fucking key words in your requirements. When I was out, that was what killed me. That and stupid requirements for experience...5 years experience in this or that...no, 4 years 6 months doesn't count.

    Any decent code written to be readable and maintainable has lots of "fluff". That's what makes it readable and easy to maintain.

    Much preferable to the mishmash of one line wonders that do ten different functions.
