Sad thing these days is that people are so jaded to screaming alarms that they don't call 911 if they see a car, alarm screaming, being hauled on a flatbed. We see crime right under our noses and we're too lazy to care.

We had a laptop stolen out of a research lab here that WAS locked down with one of those. It was a Mac (most of the laptops here are) but I don't recall if it was an Al/Ti Powerbook/Macbook Pro (metal case) or older Powerbook/Macbook (plastic case).

The thief somehow either cut the lock or ripped the lock out of the case, and got away with the laptop within five minutes.

I'm pretty sure that lab doesn't leave laptops on desks in line of sight of the door anymore.

The problem is, since people find it hassle enough to deal with returns and other similar reasons to get RMAs, they don't want to have to deal with it when it's a necessity. If it's such a hassle, they're not going to want to do it when they could just put the extra away to gather dust somewhere because they've run into the hassle that is a return in the past.

If the process were totally painless and very quick and didn't require a lot of hoops to be jumped through, I think mistakes like that would be reported more often. I know I didn't want to deal with the hassle of a return, having had problems with that place's return process in the past.

Another explanation that didn't apply to my particular case below ...

I don't understand why it is so hard to attempt to return something so often, especially when the mistake is so clearly the merchant's fault (managers stealing customers' returns, and corporate then supporting them!? - see the hard drive/tile story from yesterday).

I also suspect that given all the reports of people being defrauded (failing to sell what you claim to be selling is fraud) and the merchant outright refusing to make it right are leading to a lot of attitude of "they obviously don't care if they outright defraud people, why should I care about them?"

That's pretty funny. I wonder if they ever belatedly realized what you were trying to tell them. Of course, if they then tried to charge you while you weren't present, you would have been within your rights to file a chargeback.

I've never had that happen but I once did get a purchase charged to the card of whoever had checked out ahead of me. I did go back and have them fix it, and they were surprised (I think) that I reported it!

I once ordered three widgets and got six. This widget came in boxes of two. Someone at the warehouse had put three boxes of widgets in the shipping box, not three widgets.

I kept them for quite some time unopened in case they contacted me, but it would have been more hassle than worth to try to return them given how hard it is to deal with returns of mistakes that aren't a big deal.

I never heard anything and eventually used the widgets. I don't know if anyone ever noticed. It was a minor mistake, but still amusing.

I still remember it because usually the error is in THEIR favor.

Short explanation is that closed captions are easier to read (always white on a black background, usually) and are optimized for the hard of hearing (that would be me) or deaf, so they include sound effects and such that aren't included in subtitles.

I never understood why DirecTV dropped Tivo. I know people who have been forced to drop their Tivos due to this shortsightedness, if they want HD channels; the Tivos got far-better reviews than DTV's homegrown boxes. Why go to the expense to change, especially after lots of satisfied customers were left with pieces of junk?

I'm trying to convince my significant other to drop DirecTV and switch to a real HD Tivo. The aggravation of the junk they push isn't worth it. There's a reason why people who have Tivos love them, even though it would be easier to just use what the TV provider pushes.

I laid down the law that if I move in with him, instead of his moving up here, we're getting cable expanded to full HD+CableCard because I refuse to give up my lifetimed series 3.

That said, while I think the Series 3 is great, the HD units are as well - less disk space, the unofficial kickstart to expand to an eSATA drive doesn't work on them yet, but $300 is a pretty good deal for the best DVR/set-top box you can get (barring the S3 of course, which I quite like and don't regret buying when I did to get the lifetime transfer deal). Unfortunately, the frustrating lack of acknowledgement that you don't have to spend $700 to get an HD TiVo is probably driving off a lot of people.

I don't know if it's FUD or ignorance, but please, people (like the OP), list the correct entry price, not one more than twice as high.

While it's great that they're trying to introduce people to new music (I've picked up a few new artists from eMusic during a few free trials), to do well stores have to sell what people are actually wanting to buy. Since eMusic seems to not be interested in offering the currently-popular artists of various genres, they're going to be relegated to the sidelines. I'd really like to see them become more relevant because they do it right, so I'd like to see them change that.
