Games today are like was music in the 90's, on the cusp of change.
They are going to go to a more specialized model in the future. Sure there will still be big games (and big music groups), but when tools evolve to a point where decent (not great but decent) effects and gameplayare available to everyone, indie devs will cater to niche crowds. Games which offer specialized game mechanics and gameplay will allow you to reach a small audience cheaply and eventually when the tools improve even more you will be able to do as well with a small indie dev group as you might with a large big company sponsored team.
I have a friend who is in a moderately popular band signed with a small euro-label. They are about as far from Rock stars as you can get. They are great people, down to earth, live a normal life in a normal house. They make amazing Industial/Electronic music. They get by on concerts, t-Shirts and selling albums and MP3's. Yes their label helps them some, but my understanding is that the labels role (especially in the US) is very small and they survive on word of mouth, t-shirts, club exposure, and online sales (their web site, Amazon, etc)
Hell they are doing Dragon-Con this year. You cant get more un-rockstar than that.
More bands, more local, more specialized, that is the direction music is going in today. There is no need for mass marketed crap when you can get music that YOU love cheaply with little effort.
I challenge you to find a man and woman who have been married for 20 years (hell 10 years), ask them about their sex lives currently and find ANY in the entire country who use the word 'mind blowing' to describe it. It is not possible to have mind blowing sex with the same person 3 times a week for that long...
1) US politics has NEVER had dignity. We have had founding fathers duel with pistols. We have had a politician beaten to within an inch of ttheir life ON THE FLOOR OF THE SENATE. Dignity my ass.
2) This man did evil. Yes, I use the word intentionally. He abused power granted to him for his own gain and that of others around him, regardless of the harm he was doing to others. Just because he is dead, does not redeem him in my eyes. He still hurt every single US citizen in some way or another. 300 million paper cuts is still a lot of pain and suffering.
3) I dont know his family. I dont feel happy that they are hurting, but I do feel happy that this man can no longer harm this country.
Take the cost of housing out of the equation and show me the numbers. That is what the GP was saying.
I live in Chicago and work in Wisconsin 3 days a week. State taxes are less, but if I was in far suburban Illinois they would be close to the same as Chicago. Food is the same. Gas is 5%ish cheaper due to taxes. Utilities are the same to slightly cheaper. School loans are the same. Car loans are the same. Insurance is slightly higher but not terribly if you have a good record.
It boils down to real estate. And Il willing to bet if you dug into it that if you took the cost of real estate out of the costs associted with restaraunts, schools, markets, etc, than New Yorks woud be the same or close to it. Maybe even cheaper due to population density.
HF trading is going to euin the stock market. Arguments of the need for more fluidity in the market are absurd. It effectively syphons money from actual traders into the pockets of a few big players. The fact is that a VERY small % of the market is able to take advantage of a tool that the rest have no hope of ever using.
I can only hope it gets banned before it screws up everything.
I think Wikileaks plays an important role in information being free (as in information)
My concern is that with the things that he releases, and especially what he chooses to focus on, that he has an agenda and that he is using what is otherwise noble to press that agenda.
I agree with the point that he should have clearly identified himself, procedurally I would guess he probably got talked too by his boss. Which may have been what prompted the charges to begin with...
But the act of pulling the gun was not extreme. He actually seemed rather calm compared to many cop videos I have seen where they are all jacked up on Adreneline.
If I was innocent, yes, I would. My principles mean that much to me. I could not look my son in the eyes years later and tell him I compromised my principles just because there was a chance I could lose.
Maybe that is stupid (actually looking at it pragmaticly it IS stupid. But it is still what I would do.
The fact that I am of Irish/German decent and thus was raised as one of the most stubborn people you will ever meet.
Actually I would argue that the cop was acting reasonably by pulling his weapon because he had to stop in front of the cycle. As I understand it, coming out of a car in front of a suspect is dangerous and precaution is warrented.
Which has nothing to do with the fact that charging his for posting the video is absurb. The only good thing about this is that hopefully some court will finnally ge tto rule this shit unconstitutional.
I suggest you write your congress critters. I already wrote mine (well the Dem's, the chance of a Republican siding with a citizen over a cop is zero, It is only highly unlikely for Dem's)
I was actually discussing this with a coworker the other day. The issue is that it is a double edged sword. Yes, federal involvement would standarize what is taught in schools. However, if that became the case, you would be up a creek if those same ID nut jobs got a majority in congress at some point in the future.
As it sits now I at least have the option to move to another area if I dont like what the local school district deems valid.
My soution would be much more simple. Have colleges and universities stop accepting classes with ID as sciene classes for incoming students. When little Johnny cant get into college because they have to classify their biology class as a humanities prereq instead of sciene, the parents will change their minds in a hurry.
no, 2 digit addition should be built into other math questions. Assuming you have a range of questions to assertain the actual level of skill, you WOULD put easier and harder questions on the test. However at some point the value of the easy question approaches zero since you are so far below the minimum passing grade.
I oculd ask you to complete this ABCD_ _ _ , and yes it would show that you know the letters in the english alphabet in sequence, but does it tell you anyting about whether soomeone has reading comprehension @ a 12th grade level?
Not true. By clarifing how the law is to be applied this is limiting how media companies (and phone manufacturers) can use the existing DMCA to limit use. This was already being done by Apple and big media to limit fair use. Obviously the blurred line between hardware and software (especially in phones) is the real tricky part of this, and the one which needed clarification.
I still hate the DMCA, but (and yes, I have to bring politics into this) it looks like the Obama Administration finally got something right in regards to copyright and fair use/first sale.
I call bullshit. Work is a trade of my time and energy (mental and physical) for money. Not suffering. If you are unlucky, stupid, greedy, or fear change, then yes it can be suffering.
But I know plenty of people who are....maybe not happy, but excited and satisfied to make that trade.I am one of them. I could make more if I wanted to travel or work for a bigger corporation. I could not spend time keeping my skills up to date. I could be so concerned about my standard of living that I felt trapped (actually I am a little bit), but with a combination of luck, good decisions and hard work I have a job which is NOT suffering.
The poor sods who work 80 hours a week programming games are stupid. They could code for other ocmpanies and make close to the same wage for less hassle and time. Even in this economy employersa are hiring exceptional workers. If you are not exceptional, you have no one to blame but yourself.
From my reading, it doesnt matter since that is NOT the intended purpose. If there is an indirect effect of a weapon that can cause blindness (shrapnel), that is allowed. As for civilians, if the are being exposed to that many application s of this device, there is something really wrong.
The FCC decision is much more far reaching and frankly will hopefully restore some sense to TV and radio. If the Obama administration is smart it will not even try to appeal this.
Just because most of the people in this country are too stupid to see that they have given away power to the wrong people does not make service to the country bad.
I know in my heart that I served for the right reasons. I wanted to give back to the people who came before me. To both of my Grandfathers who served in WWI, to my cousin who just finished his 30 years and started before me. To my family because I believe that despite the shitty government we have now (and have for 40+ years) that we can still make this country a place I want my son to live in for the rest of his life.
Rules and reg dont mean shit when you are following your conscience. Whether this guy was stupid is up for debate, he obviously fell in love with his 15 min of fame. But the my understanding of the reasons he did it were noble.
Like it or not, sometimes you have to break the rules to do the right thing. Sometimes the ENTIRE chain of command is in on it. When that happens, it is perfectly acceptable to do this type of thing. Morally he did the right thing, and as I said, I appreciate this actions.
Looking at the response of the brass to this incident, I would say his assessment of their culpabiity and lack of regard for the rule of law is reasonable.
As for my service, you are correct I did not serve in either combat arms or intel. Like most people with half a brain in the military, I was used in another function. In my case, I was an ELT on a sub.
As I stated in another part of the thread, the actions were questionable given the evidence we have been presented with at this time. If there is more we dont know, Im perfectly willing to listen. And dont give me national security as an excuse, the cat is out of the bag and down the street on this one...
here is a quick reply from google. Im sure the police/fed models cost 10x as much and have less range :)

You missed the finer points. Like the fact that they tresspassed on him driveway to plant the device...
Personally if driveways are public space, then I want to go setup a cookout on the driveway of one of these judges...

what is this 1988, HIV infection is not a gay only infection. People never cease to amaze me.
I am not sure what is more sad. That your 1st reaction is to wonder this, or that I think I'm starting to believe that really happens.
Seems to me that if this plays out and is better at higher levels of compatability, that this might encourage Adobe to make a better flash player.
BINGO!

great...maybe (slim chance)
good...for sure
satifying...definitely
but mind blowing...get real.

My understanding was that the library itself was run by congress but the librarian was appointed by the administration. If that was wrong I apologize.
