  1. you have to wonder.. on Whistler "Anti-Piracy" Tools Tie OS To Machine · · Score: 1

you have to wonder.. a LOT of eyes see this type of stuff before it leaves redmond. why does this seem like a good idea?

windows has never been very interested in appealing to older hardware. the way it stands now, if the OS runs poorly and people decide to upgrade to a new compaq packaged machine then they'll sell another windows license,, therefore they have a pretty good chance at selling more than one license to the same person.

this new plan seems like an almost offensive way to snub their noses at this unspoken reality by just coming out and *making* everyone buy multiple licenses!

between this and the .NET subscriber version of MSWord.. microsoft profits must be seriously falling off.

( note to adobe: please please write linux versions of your products so i can leave windows behind forever. )

  2. re: DIY hardcore / punk on P2P Piracy? Piffle! · · Score: 1

a network of musicians exists below the radar of the music business. made up mostly of hardcore / punkrock,, this youth-centric group sets up it's own touring networks, releases records and writes fanzines.

    there are downsides:
    - the music is aimed at a very small listening population. ( ie : not for everyone )
    - lots of people get involved for a very short amount of time. why? they are still in school and have the amount of free time / money required.

  3. a record is more than a container for music. on Do Media Companies Have Copyright Wrong? · · Score: 4

at first glance, i am inclined to agree with this letter, however it ignores a single major fact. if you own the beatles white album, you must have all those glossy 8x10s and the big lyric sheet. i think the cover is embossed.. the CD layout is different.

when i buy records,, i am interested in getting an equally creative lyric sheet or insert. i want innovative packing and presentation. when you look at records in this light, it complicates the issue. getting music on CD and LP is different because of that.. it's not simply a matter of the container's shape-- the container ITSELF is part of the product.

  4. Campaign Reform. on Ask the Presidential Candidates · · Score: 1

How do you propose to change the electoral process ( including campaign financing and debating ) in order that, in 2004, the American people are not again faced with a lopsided, unfair decision in which dissenting voices are kept silent?

  5. Re:Liabilities for file sharing software? on Several Boycotts Of RIAA Organizing · · Score: 1

the radio is a $ driven wasteland. music on the radio is, for the most part, terrible. the only stuff that is remotely challenging is in the world of hiphop and even that is mostly cashmoney bullshit.

major labels PAY to get their stuff PLAYED. only regional pirate/ indie radio is worth your time. people need to start to demand quality. we are getting dumbed down.

do you think DEVO would be on the radio today?

  6. awful code and how it propagates. on What Are Good Web Coding Practices? · · Score: 1

dirty code gets passed around a lot,, in all of the different web dev circles. ( html, js, php, asp etc etc ) this is because everyone shares code especially with JS.. and copy-pastes. that's why a lot of people will all use a roundabout hack in their code.

  7. is this for REAL? on Napster, Gnutella, Bans, Lawsuits And More · · Score: 1

Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich, who said it is "sickening to know that our art is being traded like a commodity rather than the art that it is."

uhmm.. HELLO? have you been to sam goody lately? your albums are 17$! people get mp3s because they LIKE LISTENING TO MUSIC. there is no other reason. it's the music industry who treats your art like a commodity.

  8. Re:Reclaim the Internet on Stopping Distributed Denial Of Service · · Score: 2

the internet is whatever you want it to be. if you want it to be your shopping mall, then so be it. it can also be your newspaper, your television, your comic book, your bulletin board, or your game room for playing Quake II. the internet is a living, breathing thing.

agreed. the problem is that with the overpowering interest of big business comes government intervention. it's no secret that the corporate world turns the dials of the US legislation. in effect, i am afraid that those who wish the net to be their shopping mall are keeping it from being a living, breathing thing.

DDOS attacks certainly aren't the answer. it'd be nice to have better top-level domain naming, instead of everyone being .com. then perhaps certain regulation could be placed on those wishing to be a "dot com." i'm getting off-topic here,,

  9. Re:$50,000 of damages? on 10th Anniversary of Steve Jackson Games Raid · · Score: 3

there is an oversight in the article. the author neglected to mention that every employee of SJ Games at the time of the seizure was awarded an additional 50,000 *experience points.*

when you think of that in terms of levels and new spells -- it's pretty worth it.

  10. omnisexuality? on Men Playing as Women · · Score: 2

does the net allow people to explore both sides of their sexuality? it's fairly common, i believe, for psychologists to see each human as having both sides of the sexual duality within them. therefore,, using computers as an outlet for that "unused" side is pretty interesting. as far as gaming is concerned,, women are often superior to men in many ways. ( as stated, agility among them ) but is the percentage higher than the rate of men who played woman in traditional RPGs? i predict that it would be higher, simply due the anonymity factor. 3x kevin
