I would imagine that the guys over at xmovie would have/will incorporate deCSS with their current DVD player. From their web page, they say that it can already play non-encrypted DVDs, it would seem that it would be a rather minor step to include deCSS
thats why I'll stick with gqmpeg/mpg123 for now. For awhile xmms will do fine...but then every once in a while it'll just up to %50 CPU usage...thats on a dual 400, so I don't think that is right!
it's a little early in the morning...well OK so it is afternoon, but I just woke up, and am still a bit groggy. Sorry.
As for featureness, from what they told me, it will matchup pretty close. Not sure on the differences, so I guess I am just wasting everyone's time now:(
I talked to some Corel reps who were at my local LUG (Ottawa) and from what they said in late November, Corel Office will be out in Feburary, as will Corel Draw. I asked some dfferent reps at another function in Ottawa, and they said the same thing. So I would imagine it will be out by March or April.
This is the text of the email that I got...the way I read it is, as long as I set it up securely (and are not too high-volume) it is ok to run a server... Dear Rogers@Home Subscribers: In an effort to preserve the quality of our service to all our customers, the Network Security & Fraud department has performed a sweep of the network in your area. The tests that were performed found mail servers or misconfigured software that is allowing others to send email through our subscribers' computers anonymously. We are sending this you this notice, as it appears your computer is susceptible to this type of activity. If you are operating a mail server or some type of Proxy software (i.e. Winroute, Wingate, etc), please remove this server or secure the software to ensure it is not used in this manner. Due to the nature of this security problem, failure to secure your computer in a timely manner may result in a suspension of service until this condition is rectified. Your account will be re-examined within 5 business days of this notice. Please ensure that you have removed all servers from your system or secured any software that may be allowing the relaying of e-mail.
secure ones that is. I got a email from abuse@home.com asking me to _secure_ my mail server...not to shut it down..so I take from that that they are allowing servers to be run. (why did they ask me that? well..uhh, cough cough, sendmail was allowing relaying to the world, I just went with the default setup from RH6.1, and didn't have time to tweak it much, until I got that letter) incidently I got that email about 2 months ago.
God damn! All I've seen here is a bunch of bitchers and whiners complaining about how there is now another WM...Jesus H Christ!! It's not like ice just appeared!! It's been out fer years! I've also heard a bunch of people complaining about how it isn't configureable...try icepref!! I hope no one was saying that it is bloated, and eats too much memory...it has to be the fastest, most lean WM I've ever used...don't believe me? check out freshmeat's page Also...its not like it is Just Another GNOME WM...it was out way before GNOME..and GNOME compliance was added when GNOME came out..
I can see your point, but I feel offended that you are saying that aimed at Ice...its been out for a long time, and it is now reaching a one point oh release..it probably could of reached that last year some time...but version numbers don;t mean jack to OSS developers (ie slack) if you don't believe me, check out freshmeat's page on ice..loads of good shit said about them.
I don't think anyone is (realistically) suggesting that MS completely opens up windows...just their some of their APIs. The way I understand it, MS only publishes info about parts of the internals of windows, leaving some "good" parts hidden so that only MS apps can take advantage of them. By opening up all of them, it would allow other companies to compete fairly with MS apps.
I see it as different. More stable, less ram hungry, much harder to use, many missing features. "less ram hungry"??? If you are comparing windows and Linux..then you are probably comparing the desktopedness of linux to windows (running X, wm, a net browser, etc), and Linux is very RAM hungry...netscape/mozilla both devour RAM, so does X itself. Now, if you are comparing Linux the server to windows the server, then ya sure Linux doesn't use half as much ram..(assuming that you aren't running X)
sorry to pick nits.
PS try out corel Linux...its should be pretty nice for non-techie people.

While I do agree with the benefits of OSS...I highly doubt that you have gone through all the source for everything on your system. "If i cannot see what the program does i do NOT trust it." the above statement, to me, means that _you_ have gone through all the code...If that were true...you wouldn't have time to even read/. You'd still be running through the kernel source..or your shell's source, or the source for gcc, or if you run X, X's source, and Mozilla's, and your window managers..etc. I would imagine that you have created your own BIOS software, since the code for most BIOS's are closed. It is somewhat true that you yourself don't have to go through it because "so many others" have already, but that is not what you said. I am also surprised that you would even consider using a credit card, since the software that runs credit card readers are closed. I'm sure that your credit card company keeps close track of what you buy, and where you are..then sells it off. You don't actually use a bank, do you? All their software is closed. And I'm sure that your bank has loads of info on you. good luck never using closed software any more.
corel is putting a lot of resources into Linux, I was at an installfest that corel was at, and they were demoing quattro pro for Linux, a newer WP for Linux, Corel linux, and were talking about how Corel Draw will be out "early next year" for Linux. The office suite is planned to be released in Feb, and their disto for christmas..but I hope they don't push it out the door too quickly..I've played with the beta and it has a lot of potential (for the desktop side)...but there are still lots of things to get worked out. Everyone seems to be questioning the motives of Corel..well like any other company they are out to make money. They see _huge_ potential in Linux, and want to get in and be the defacto standard office suite. They are also creating their own distro, one that is aimed at newbies switching from windows, and also at being able to sit on a desktop in a office. And for all those people bitching about them not releasing their code..they will. I've asked several Corel reps, and they have all promised me that all of the code put in for Corel Linux will be GPLed.
I have seen accelX take down my computer before though, I was trying it out with my brand-spanking-new diamond Stealth 3200, I used the wrong settings, and poof it brought Linux down...my fault of course, but it could of at least crashed nicely...
since we are talking about feature requests here... what about getting URL autocompletion in Linux...they have it i the windows version, and I find it to be pretty nice little feature, I nuch perfer it to bookmarks...
I would definetly have to agree with this. And as far as I'm concerned, that is all that is all that they are doing wrong. Any Joe Schmoe can modify GPLed code, and distribute it to his buddies in binary format, (as long as he doesn't charge for it, or claim that it all his own work) and no one would bitch. The real problem is that Corel really doesn't understand OSS... why would they only let X number of people beta test, when they could have X^10! also, they seem to be alienating a lot of the OSS group by doing this (well all the quick tempered, ones at least) which is something you _really_ don't want to do. In order for a distro to do well, you need solid backing by the geeks, so they will write software for it, make binary packages for it, and recomend it to everyone else (non-geeks) by pissing off the geeks, your distro is dead in the water.
I'm not sure what you are getting at here...If you don't want to see all the trolls, then surf at threshhold 1, if you _do_ want to see everything...well then you all this moderation stuff is useless for you....
>>I also think one of the best things that we >>could do would be to remove the 'automatic' >>moderators.Instead, moderators should be hand >>picked based on there posts by Commander Taco, >>or Hemos or someone. Or me:) and then give them >>unlimited moderator points ...that prolly wouldn't work so well....that would mean that there are _a lot_ less moderators, and they would have to do a whole lot of work...right now, with so many moderators it works out so each person doesn't have to do too much.
I'm with ya... as I said in a previous post, I think Rob should create a handful of Super Moderators that have this power. These would have to be somewhat carefully selected people, that can be trusted with this "awesome power".
the thing is, we don't _have_ to do this, all we really have to do is up our threshhold to 2 or something, and there is no problem... If that isn't an option for you, maybe Rob could make a handful of Super Moderators (tm), who can actually kill comments that are just obvious flame-baits. I think this also brings up the question of if there should be ACs or not...
would it be possible to have sort of "on screen programming" coming out of a linux box? Like, having the regular TV channel being watched but have a small line of text being displayed by the linux box, while not using a regular off the shelf vga-to-tv type of video converter...
can anyone point me to a FAQ, or a HOW-TO on howto set up my box to act as an ISP...what I want to do is to be able to dial in to home, and connect to the net from my box. I have an ethernet connection to the net.
