"Ever notice now that everyone always has bottled water or coffee in their hands at all times? When the hell did we all become so thirsty all of a sudden?"...or something like that.
I've always been very annoyed with web forms that don't use Javascript to do some basic validation before the form is submitted.
Like, when I fill out a form, sumbit it, wait for a response and, oops, the phone # must be in xxx-xxx-xxxx format. It went all the way back to the server before this was caught, and a new page had to be sent all the way back with this "error" for me to correct.
I've done a small amount of client-side form validation in Javascript for an intranet site we set up, it's not that hard. It's a win-win: you decrease the load on the server in doing the initial validation and you improve the user's experience by eliminating the extra round trip.
In fact, most states have regulations on the books that not only require that 911 services be made free to the caller, but that the service cannot be denied for any reason (ie, past due balance disconnection, etc). Pay phones must allow 911 to be dialed and connected without any coins deposited.
Only reason I know about this is because I work on a mediation & prepaid billing system for wireless and we had to implement a requirement for a nationwide carrier to specifically allow 911 calls to always go through, regardless of the sub's account status.
>The characters are distinct and have real personalities. Each one has a sad past that you gradually learn about through the series.
Except Edward? Apart from the episide where she is introduced, Ed seems to be there for mainly comic relief. Too bad, too. I thought her character had lots of possibilities, and apart from that chessmaster episode, she doesn't really seem to have much of a role at all.
(although, I haven't seen *all* of the episodes - CN disrupted the start-to-finish airing a couple weeks ago and I've lost track).
I think it's for legal defense purposes, not to really safeguard productivity.
I ran into a problem here at work where they recently started filtering and lists.samba.org is blocked because it falls under the category of 'net newsgroup' which is blocked by default.
I called to ask if this could be lifted since this is a legitimate source of work-related information. The person on the other end could care less. Her job was to put in a filtering solution to reduce the company's exposure for a harassment lawsit.

More like...
the other day, intending to call my friend on the phone, I dialed the wrong number and got 42 phone calls from telemarketing companies trying to sell me phonecards.
>It's unfortunate that Universal is treating me like a potential criminal when all I want to do is listen to these tracks which I've payed for on my mp3 player and my computer
You know, the idiot guy on CNN, Jack Cafferty made a comment that pissed me off.
They were talking about how to do this, and he jumped in and said something inane like
"Gee, next why don't we tell them how to crack into safes or something?"
So the implication is that you must be out to steal if you want to be able to play this in your PC. They only said these were 'copy protected', not PC player disabled. The assumption being, that unless you are putting this into a stand-alone player, you must be out to illegally copy the CD.
On four-lane roads where traffic moves in both directions, drivers traveling in the same direction as the school bus must stop when the red lights are flashing and the stop sign is extended. Students are not permitted to cross a four-lane roads where traffic is travels in both directions. http://www.hoffmanestates.com/Police/Safety_Alerts / olice_school_bus.htm
I've never seen anyone almost cause an accident because of having to stop. The bus starts flashing as it slows down and the stop sign doesn't come out for about 10-15 seconds after the bust stops by which time most cars have started slowing down.
Sure, it is a drag to have to stop for 5 minutes on your way to work. We wouldn't have a law like this if moron drivers hadn't run down kids as they passed stopped school busses going 50 mph. This is what happened to my sister-in-law when she was 10.
Should a 10-yr old know enough to look before crossing the street? Sure.
Should a 30 yr old know enough to slow down and look out for kids when passing a school bus. F-ing A right.
The only way to get through to the 1% moron drivers that they need to slow down/stop around school busses is to hang the threat of $1,500 fine over their heads.
You know, you think about it, Leia and her "rebel friends" look like a bunch of terrorists, depending on your perspective. "Striking from a hidden base", and all that.
Sure, the empire is evil. Sound familiar? Striking out against the great evil that has enveloped the galaxy in its wicked grasp, this small band of freedom fighters struggles against the overwhelming might of an unjust and corrupt empire.
But, from the other side of the "war on terror": "Our top story tonight, imperial security sources tell us that a radical terrorist group, calling themselves "the alliance", has struck once again at key imperial military and economic interests in the outer rim of the galaxy."
"Our source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that terrorists, using small, lightly armed attack fighters, carried out a cowardly surprise attack against a major imperial space station. The source reports that the terrorists were beaten back and that the space station sustained only minor damage."
"However, we at ENN have received unconfirmed reports that the space station was, in fact, destroyed by the terrorist attack. Only one imperial commander reportedly managed to escape from the space station, and is now leading a manhunt to track down and destroy the terrorists responsible for this attack."
No, I'm not equating the star wars empire to any particular country on earth, just making the observation that what differentiates a rebel hero from a terrorist is your perspective.
We actually enjoyed seeing it again, with full knowledge of the plot after seeing it the first time when it was in theaters.
It was on cable recently (USA, I think) and my wife and I liked watching it again, going "Ok, now that makes sense why the doorknob was red and was always locked!"
Oh good. Then one of the first missions could be to go out an retreive voyager before it falls into the wrong hands and is used as blackmail.
"Ha! Look at the cute little spacecraft the earthlings sent out thousands of years ago! How pitiful!"
"Shut up, give it back!"
"Oooh, I bet the guys on Gallus V will really get a kick out of this. The Big Bad Earthers and their cute little tin-foil spacecraft!"
Kind of like when your big brother finds a picture of you in the bathtub at age 9 months and threatens to show it to your friends.
"Thank you for warning me about palladium. When you spell Microsoft "M$" though, this is what I picture."
Sorry, couldn't resist.
Bill Mahr did a rant about that.
...or something like that.
"Ever notice now that everyone always has bottled water or coffee in their hands at all times? When the hell did we all become so thirsty all of a sudden?"
Disposable cup manufacturers have taken notice of the popularity/compulsory nature of larger cup sizes
;-)
I prefer something along a 36 D, myself.
Heh, I would have put the salaries of all of the employees that provide the fine service at the top of the list, actually. ;o)
BTW, excellent trolling, moch.
I much en-joy-joy-ed it.

yeah, but 411 would have cost the webtv owners money because phone companies typically charge a $0.35 surcharge for DA calls?
</tongueincheek>
Doesn't ring a bell. I figured there was some editing going on, perhaps an episode or two missing.
I'm really into this show and I plan to save my nickels and buy DVD when I can.

If it's not-for-profit, then who has the incentive to publish it? The government?

What if you weren't killing anyone at all, just answering a hypothetical question that others would know about and be able to judge your character by?
I think it was the 'Nude Raider' patch that first drove me to upgrade. ;-)
Heh, I didn't know who he was until my sister called and asked if I couuld record the HBO special for her.
He's fucking hilarious.
>Alan Cox
He certainly would, if it were him.
This is *Alex* Cox (the writer/director of cult classic Repo Man and punk movie Sid And Nancy)
>Jeezy Creezy
Don't call me that, dad.

Based on the crappy vid quality (was on 4 miin, btw) I think it is entirely possible that it was downloaded.
What, does tivo pay to have "exclusive" Cheryl Crow video rehearsal footage aired on some channel late at night that the thing tunes to for 4 minutes?
Sorry, but that's what I assumed had happened -- didn't seem all that unreasonable. Could obviously be wrong tho -- anyone know for sure?
