I am sure a couple of my servers would take longer than 49 mins. And the servers are considered top of the line. Quad cpu with gobs of memory etc.

And those who made it to the end of the page found a statement that more interesting material could be found in the HTML source of the hack.

  3. Dance clubs age limits on CTO is Too Young for Comdex · · Score: 1

    Hi,

Am I the only one who finds these unfounded?

    Case study:

In San Francisco most strip clubs are 18+ and virtually all dance clubs are 21+.

You would argue that's because of "Wet" bar. Well, both 18+ clubs that I go to have alcoholic drinks in them, they just stamp you as not eligible to buy.

Yet near my house, there is a more technically advanced club that plays my favorite music and I can't go to.

In other words, you are welcome to get screwed when you are 18, but you are not welcome to dance until you're 21 and get some stress relief that way.

If you ask me, that is very sad. :(

FYI, I was once not able to attend a computer show when I was 16. I was employed as an IS manager at the time.

Stupid laws, I literally have to fly across the world to avoid the age limits.

I don't drink and live half a block away. I read slashdot, how dangerous can I be? ;-)

I might just have to get involved in politics later on, this practice is plain unacceptable.

    I am 19 now.

  7. Why they did it this way... on MTV's Hacker Portrayal · · Score: 1

I tape AMP... I don't have time to search out electronica-related information elsewhere. Although I did find a cool store in SF on Haight street, a selection of 100 most excellent CDs next to Ashbury music center. Of course now I listen to Shoutcast techno channels and contribute to them :).

Expensive CDs, a lot more than normal ones, but worth it... Besides, what does the $10 difference mean to an employed geek? A lot less than to a typical MTV watches that's for sure. :-)

The shows you've just mentioned are about the only ones that are good. I do occasionally watch "dawn patrol" as I get home at about 6am. Don't remember watching neo-pop at that time.

I am quite certain that if they started airing AMP during day they would get a lot of confused feedback such as "What about feelings? Isn't love the only thing you should sing about?". LOL :-)

Santana went the right route with the video "Smooth". The lead singer of Matchbox20 Rob Thomas, I believe, is an exceptionally talented singer with a unique voice, in my opinion.

Matchbox20 hit the alternative scene hard a couple of years ago and became quite a popular band. So popular in fact, that MTV aired their non-MTV-type songs.

Now tell me how many teenagers today know who Carlos Santana is? And what percentage of them bothers to watch MTV? ;-). In order for MTV to air a Santana song, they had have someone the audience could associate with in the video. I think that was a right decision. They are also experimenting with rock audience, notice the "Scar Tissue" video. The way I see it, these videos no longer belong on today's neo-pop MTV and the execs believe so.

If you flip to VH1, you will see that the 70s content (8-track flashback and the like) is now long gone, and it's transitioning to accept people who hate the current MTV.

120 minutes is a very nice show as well. But would they show it during prime time? No way! Premium advertising is reserved for mainstream.. and today mainstream is rap, r&b, and neo-pop.

Celebrity Deathmatch is simply fun to watch :-). Nicely done good old parody on the "wrestling" shows.

Before I get disqualified due to age, I am 19 and I dislike MTV :-)

I would suggest a 286 with a 3.5" floppy though, easier to find a diskette compatible with it :). You'll also need a serial cable, probably the null modem variety.

I think you'll find this solution better than hunting for a genuine dumb terminal.

In my observations Netscape's development went severely downhill after release 4.05.

Don't get me wrong, I used to be a member of DevEdge and loved Netscape. :)

I think as soon as they started integrating Netcenter, what's related, and other nonsense the number of problems increased.

What really pissed me off is that I had to edit prefs.js to turn off the Netcenter crap. Then again, AOL purchased them, what could you expect? User-friendly way to turn off annoyances? ;-)

I would advise using Netscape's FTP archive for previously released versions and download release 3.04gold. That's probably the most stable release they ever had with no Netcenter nonsense and quality engineering.

I have a DevEdge CD with all releases of Netscape up to 4.5 for all platforms, and this is the most stable version.

For example, I've encouraged a couple of most trouble-generating departments to contact me directly bypassing the layers of helpdesk. Why? The tech support manager is not happy with that, but that's none of my concern :-).

I encouraged helpdesk to forward their calls without managerial approval. I don't believe in making someone suffer because of some middle-level policy.

Yes, I want money, I pay for that with lack of personal life . Can you put a price tag on that? You most certainly can. I can afford any enterntainment and I don't have time for that.

Yes, I want to make impact, I see things out of place and know how to correct them, given time and resources. If I see a user using a PC that is greatly underpowered for their needs, I want to be able to suggest a replacement or schedule a replacement.

I believe in constant learning and never pass up an opportunity to pick up a yet another cert or evaluate a new product.

I automated my environment to a point where I don't have to waste time running repetitive tasks.

As I just went home to Ukraine recently, I was a bit surprised at the amount of software on the streets.

Computers fell to the $200 range, no one cares about top of the line machines there, but a lot have 3d accelerators installed.

Average software package runs you $1.5, stuff like Microsoft Office 2000 Premium was $6.

Computer programming is a required class in all high schools. Now, if you take into account that we learn Algebra in 5th grade and Physics in 6th, why are you surprised? We graduate as programmers. We still use DOS on a daily basis. It is starting to become Netadmin-only thing here in US.

English is also a required class, for at least 4 years.

So what do you get? People who are highly skilled in computer technology and who have no way of utilizing that skill in their country.

Would you hire them to spy on other countries? Would they agree? Yep, nothing to lose with non-existant computer laws.

The kids there do not think of sports or showbusiness as a #1 career, they are into the IT. There is no such thing as legal software either. If I need say HP Openview, I'll get it free from a friend or for $1.5 on any street corner. Yes, the duplicated software is sold more openly than drugs but in the same fashion.

It is cheaper for me to order a lot latest games already modified and pay for the air international shipping rather than to hit a local store.

People do have time to burn, and software engineering is probably the most profitable career choice.
