Not sure about the rest of Africa but I was shocked to see the price plans for the internet in S. Africa. My cousin was getting a 0.5Mbit connection for something line £20/month and he was shocked to hear that i was getting 2Mbit for £10 (which is now upgraded for free to 10Mbit).
I was told that a reason for the high cost in SA is because they've had a technology leap rather than slowly upgrading their systems and so there was a lot more investment costs. Most SA I know have internet on their mobile phones as pc's are still relatively quite expensive (to their income... it's about the same price as in £).
But what was even more surprising is a lot of poor people have mobile phones! They struggle to get food on their plate yet they will have a mobile phone to their ear! Strange country.
Of course, how would you back this up? I'd like to see a poll on slashdot readers because I don't think there are as many 'computer boffs' as some people suggest. For example, I am fairly competent using pc's, both hardware and software-wise but I don't have linux or mac. I'm scientifically/engineering minded and come on here to read (now usually old) news and read the opinions, share where I can and find out how much people are aware in my particular fields of expertise.
Just though of Minority Report with people being busted before the crime is committed... the precogs must still be in training and aren't fully functional yet.
I can't believe you've remained standing... I tried to make a point when a poster said something akin to "to do that, type [insert code]" with a simple one liner of "and you wonder why people don't take on linux" but fanboys are worse than a bunch of Myley Cyrus (or whoever the crap is on my Kleenex packet) fans and got modded to oblivion.
As soon as you make an OS so you need some technical expertise, you've lost and you'll end up with a community of whiners wondering why no-one else wants to use it.
it's not as if there was a difficult process of obtaining the photos and if the NPG were going to charge the user to upload the photos on Wikipedia then he could always look elsewhere for photos or take them him/herself!
I think a lot of people forget common courtesy when they're on the net... if you're going to use someone else's effort, you should at least notify them. To me, this seems just like a case of ignorance... the user was simply filling out an entry and taking photos from official sites but not taking the time to read or even ask for permission
anyone check the congestion levels on the intertube highway?
From what I've learnt on/. it's that everything is like a car so having lots of people not being able to start their cars will mean there'll be more space on the highway for me... although all these car-less people will all be catching the tube and that will be really packed... damn car anology!
hrmmm... check the Orion VI and the Enviro 200;)
There are examples out there for every hybrid architecture but due to the pros/cons of each architecture, you may not realise where they've been applied. Series hybrid architecture have much larger components such as the motor which is sized for maximum output and not suitable for running at high speeds, thus why you wouldn't see them used in the family market but they are used in buses, as pointed in the above examples.

*sigh* I've got such a bad Karma burn when I merely suggested that Linux was not easy for the average user that all my posts are now at -1 and/. now won't even let me make comments... sometimes I wonder why I even bothered leaving Lurkerville
I've been a lurker on Slashdot for a long time and only recently signed up and started posting... but I finally understand what karma-burn is! Put one thing negative about *nix and karma goes down faster than Monica Lewinsky!
In reply to my own post, my point is that if someone is thinking of going over to Linux and runs across comments like that, alarm bells will be ringing and the big red button at panic station will just inject a dose of Microsoft to keep them happy!
When things aren't user friendly, don't go beating on people who point it out.
Jeez, it's a tough crowd here.
I remember watching Tomorrow's World a decade or more ago and they were talking of terraforming Mars... I've been waiting since!
Scientists are coming up with different ideas of terraforming and a lot are on the basis of what technology will be available in the future... it seems the future is possibly even further away that Duke Nukem Forever!
Is this cost/song calculated by finding how many people the songs were distributed to? So if each song went to 100 people, that's a total 'loss' to the company of 2424 sales which brings the cost per song to $792 and reduces further with more uploads.
- Replaced their Office interface with that goddawful ever changing ribbon which certain geeks continue to defend despite it completely ruining productivity, and now they're incorporating it into every damn program they can
It's your opinion that it's not great yet you admit there are those that find it easy to use... ever thought you were the problem?
So quick vote for how many clicked on the link in the summary thinking it was a link to xXx Bing?
And I assume those that don't reply merely have sticky fingers.../hands up
What a way to get into the hearts and hands of millions of users worldwide! I think they'll be finding the usage of Bing shoot up dramatically but I'd like to see the comparison between normal Bing and xXx Bing!
makes me feel better that I don't have to spend as much on gas which comes from Arab countries. I basically than tell them that by purchasing a Hummer that they are feeding 5 hunger Arab families everytime they fill up and that they just made a small donation to the local Mosque over there.
erm... yeah, good job at not trying to seem racist... oh, and don't forget your white hood on the way out!
This I gotta see to believe.
I hate playing games ported because you always feel that it wasn't a bespoke game and at worst, is completely fubar'd... Juiced 2, I'm looking at you! The only game I know where you have to disable the sound to be able to play it!

Only on slashdot would you get a technical article and there are 50 replies to a pedantic question on language usage in the summary!
Hrmmmmm... don't you love the smell of karma burn first thing in the morning?
OK, who had to read that sentence again and double check that the microalgae called Konar didn't speak?!
And what is that, in your opinion?

I doub't I'm the only one.

Out of curiosity, how does a colour-blind person view '3D' movies? Are the affected?
Who were the alternative to these two? Non-whites.... right?

A skinny and healthy looking guy could run less far than a bigger person.

both your links state a $25 royalty per car (I know, I know... I read a linked article... so sue me :p )

when you're setting up your own filesystems, however... just use ntfs-3g and fs-driver. problems solved. just don't forget to use mke2fs -I 128
and there are those who wonder why people don't use linux

I think you need to see a doctor about that...

Won't someone think of the imaginary children?
I think that was the problem in the first place ;-p
So the reason damages are so high in copyright cases is because there is a statue about it.
and they said a picture is worth a thousand words!
I hate to say this and don't mean to be racist.
