Ray tracing has been around a long time. Even ray tracing in the cloud isn't that new. NVidia has the RealityServer.
More than half my friend list consists of people that I don't really know. Some are gamers who help me with social games that offer benefits to players that have a lot of friends who play the same game. Also, it seems to have become a fad to use weird aliases instead of real names.
I own a social networking site and members occasionally write about how they think the site could be improved. I read their suggestions, and I implement some of them, but I don't try to implement all of them. I implement the ones that I like that are practical to implement, and I explain why I don't intend to implement the ones that I don't like or consider to be impractical.

I seriously doubt that such technology could be durable enough to handle more than a few hundred read/write operations.
