  1. $69.00? on Ximian Connector 1.0 Available · · Score: 0, Insightful

Anybody who would pay $69.00 just so they can get rid of Microsoft on their computer is pretty much clueless. Lets at least try to encourage companies to produce better more price competitive pieces of software rather than supporting every piece of crap that happens to have a price tag on it.

And people wonder why Microsoft isnt going anywhere anytime soon. I mean if a $69.00 is the absolute best Ximian can do when pricing this piece of crap - then they are bound to fail. Thats a third of the cost of windows and more than half of the cost of the Outlook XP upgrade sold seperately.

The fact that this thing requires OWA (Outlook Web Access) to be installed should make you wary as well. Its not even directly connecting using exchange protocols (if that was the case it would work with Exchange 5.5) its simply making a slow ass HTTP connection to the server and parsing the output. What a pathetic hack.

Either way, anybody who buys this deserves to be laughed at. So rest assured I will be putting in my portion on that front. Hahahahahahahahaha...

Finally more than a few of us are starting to get it :-) Open Source != Security and anybody who thinks so doesnt understand the nature of security in general. Open Source by definition is an insecure development methodology based on loose or nonexistant trust relationships which can obviously lead to insecure code.

In the world of security - assumed trust is a mortal sin. In the world of Open Source - it goes without saying. The two concepts obviously do not jive and its nice to see that the security community is finally starting to understand this.

As for this post - none of you will probably ever see this as my karma went straight to hell in a handcart many months ago. Perhaps a few generous moderators could spare a few points though I doubt that will happen since the ProLinux rheotoric will be in a full swing within a few minutes of this posting.

We've seen the Redmond giant quietly start forcing large OEMs to provide only recovery CDs for Windows

Perhaps thats because MS is sick of getting support calls from people who have no buisness reinstalling their OS (99% of Computer Users worldwide fall into this catergory)

When I installed OfficeXP, it started beating my hard disk with constant access

Truly sad. This is was tends to happen when files are being copied from one medium to the next. The harddrive tends to get accessed. Thats like saying, "I tried coping a 500 meg file from the network and my harddrive light started blinking. Microsoft must be doing something sneaky"

and to do that it starts charging for activation keys based upon your system configuration?

Is this supposed to be an InfoWorld article or a proposed X Files script?

"Imagine the boon Windows product activation promises for Bill's legion of lawyers," another reader wrote. "No more having to wait for the next major release when they want to change the EULA (End-User License Agreement). They can just send out a signal that disables everyone until they reactivate and click through the new terms ...

Ummmm... no. They cant change the licensing terms of a signed agreement when it comes to the corporate contracts. DUH. As far as the end user is concerned they bought their product and paid for it - Microsoft cant charge them anymore. The 1984 Orwellian paranoia is really starting to get out of control here. Its obvious infoworld as slashdot cannot be a source for "reliable journalism".

So let's see: Microsoft is trying to control how customers use OEM software, trying to control when customers upgrade its products, trying to control when customers upgrade their hardware, and trying to control what customers say about Microsoft. I think I see a pattern.

I dont see any pattern. I see a company who is attempting to curb the vast amount of piracy that costs them billions of dollars a year. If you people think thats wrong - perhaps you should have your head examined.

No WPA wont stop the hardcore IRC pirate - not when they have the Corporate Edition of XP - but it will stop that casual copier cold. So when your neighbor wants to borrow your XP disc so that he can reinstall - but finds it wont work - he will actually have to pay for the product he chooses to use.

Remember: Just because Linux is free doesnt nessacarily make it right to impose that singular socialistic standard on everything else.
