Then you need to be getting the web developers, who use windows, to use your technology instead of QuickTime and Shockwave. Good luck... Once you've accomplished that, there will be no need to worry about this. Until then, people want to be able to view websites that are made with software that works only on Windows.

No they did not use code from Mozilla. kmozilla is not a part of konqueror, but a plugin which can be used instead of the khtml engine.
Virtually everyone uses KHTML with Konqueror and thus they are using 100% new code.
KDE 2.2 will be shipping with a new kernel configurator too. It's build into the KDE Control Centre and is a very simple, fast and easy way to configure your kernel. It uses the kernel's existing configuration files/system but has it's own parser and intuitive gui. Check it out!!
I signed up for that and I put the msiepiss.gif up on my page. Their stupid bot couldn't tell the difference and it let me in anyways. For those of you who never saw it, it was an animated gif with a man who runs across the browser, drops his pants and pisses all over the MSIE logo (splash and all). I guess if it's good enough for MS, then why not?

This is nothing new. Astronomers already do this. In fact I just finished an assignment in my astro class which was 100% web data mining, and we have grad students here doing the same for their thesis.
I also find it rather stupid to make a "network of observatories". Perhaps microsoft.COM forgets, the world wide web was invented by physicists and astronomers for that purpose. The WWW _is_ this database he wants to "create". Someone's been learning from Al Gore I think.
And what's with MS trying to pretend they have a PARC by calling it BARC? *shaking head in shame*
It's definitely going to be harder than before, when becoming you simply required a colour photocopier or a card puncher and a magnetic strip writer. It won't be easier, and that's what really matters.
I mentioned this to them, and apparently BeOS users have been complaining too. So, I suspect they are aware of this, and are making an overall compatible site. I tested from HP-UX and it works fine from there as well......
Maybe if I get free time I'll do testing from IRIX and Solaris too.
I ran into this as well. They supported Linux for a very long time and then they decided to make some updates to the page to make it non-Linux compatible. It was REALLY stupid and I even called them and told them how to fix the page to make it work with Linux again, but they would hear nothing of it. I actually posted a comment to slashdot about this a couple of months ago in a story that had some remote links to this topic. I told TD support that I would post information all over the web about their treatment of people who didn't want to use Windows or MacOS. They actually told me to go out and buy Windows if I wanted to use their site!! I was really pissed off and managed to speak to the manager, who told me that they were developing a better site. She gave me access to this beta site, which actually does work, and I can verify that they now do support Linux. I guess enough people called to complain. They were ->- that close to losing me as a customer after 21 years, and with me, losing some serious commercial business too. Be patient. Within a month or two (hopefully), it will work again. The new site is much faster and more full-featured too.
I know it's frustrating, but they know what it's all about now.
Please be aware that, last I checked, there is no kde1-compat rpm available yet. This means that unless you manually install the old libraries again, you will not be able to run KDE 1.x applications. Bero is working on this last I heard.
However I've been running RC2 since it came out and it works really nicely!
Anyone notice the broken HTML on the page up in the top right corner? Nice work Microsoft!:) Keep up with the shitty HTML - it sure impresses people when the company that makes web authoring tools can't even properly design their own pages!

The biggest bug in RH7 is the compiler. GCC 2.96/glibc 2.whatever.they.ship is not binary compatible with previous releases. When I installed the RH7.0 upgrade I had to recompile most of my glibc binaries. This is _bad_. Especially since one of these binaries was KDE2.0 from cvs (took many hours). Also the compiler seems to be twice as slow as the previous gcc.
The upgrade was also a problem. It wiped out my/home/httpd completely - a dir I mysteriously had forgotten in my backup list. *d'oh*
kpackage is broken - segfaults all over the place.
My bank, Toronto Dominion Bank's website A HREF="http://www.tdaccess.com">http://www.tdaccess .com just introduced a bug in the javascript code which makes it not work unless you're using
windows or a mac. This is after 2 years of working fine. I called support and they wouldn't let me speak to the IT department and told me the bug was that I wasn't using windows and that I should go buy it and use it instead. They sounded like complete fools. Let's just say they're not going to keep my account for much longer.
You are wrong with this, and I have code to prove it. Most vendors make their own kernel patches and thus have slight incompatibilities. SUSE, Redhat, and others. This is a topic of much controversy lately.
Restrictions on the licences for the protocols. They are not allowed to release the source code. However what they should be doing, and what is repeated time and time again on linux-kernel and in developer documentation, is they should be making a binary-only userspace daemon for the protocols (compiled for all the different architectures that can use a winmodem, not just a McCpu (x86)). Then they should provide a source driver to interface with the daemon and the hardware. There is NO reason to have V.32, V.90, etc in the kernel.
Yes they've solved the winmodem problem.. in a really crappy way. From what I can tell, they paid(or got for free?) Lucent to write the driver. Now get this... it works with Redhat only. And it's binary only ahere the driver is basically locked down to a kernel version so you can't upgrade your kernel until they release a new driver. Furthermore, it is a buggy driver. If you try to use the serial port after using the WinModem driver, the computer freezes solid. No contact info on who wrote the driver yet. You can find info on Linux + i series Thinkpads here. This model uses the Lucent WinModem.
This is probably the best thinking we've seen so far in this case. It's not motivated by immaturity or rage... It's a new approach. SOmething I think is really needed. I don't necessarily say that his approach is *best*, but people who want to fight the the DVD corporations must do it in a more constructive way. Furthermore, you probably have to play by their rules. They make the rules and they control the people who enforce the rules. If you don't play by them, you're sure to get crushed.
Java+SSL requires that you install JSSE. It has nothing to do with KSSL. Please read the FAQ on www.konqueror.org
No-one said you have to use it. It's a separate plugin. Do you have to use _all_ the Netscape plugins in order to use Netscape?
