XUL has almost every advantage on ActiveX. It's familiar web technologies (XML, CSS, Javascript, DOM...), cross-platform, safer, etc. I have to disagree with it being classified as proprietary; it's a conglomerate of open standards and were it to take hold there'd be nothing to stop other browsers from implementing it (which is definitely a good thing). Currently being supported by only 1 browser is not the same as being proprietary.
But frankly I don't see either technology dominating in the future. ActiveX has been in decline for a while (based on my own observations) and I doubt XUL will ever see much use for web app development. It offers nice things and all, but I don't think it offers anything so special as to make people use it over vanilla W3C standards.
Besides, in 10 years there will probably be so many no-talent assclowns in the computer industry that every website will be done completely in flash.
Eskimo has come under strong attack in recent years for its supposed offensiveness, and many Americans today either avoid this term or feel uneasy using it. It is widely known that Inuit, a term of ethnic pride, offers an acceptable alternative, but it is less well understood that Inuit cannot substitute for Eskimo in all cases, being restricted in usage to the Inuit-speaking peoples of Arctic Canada and parts of Greenland. In Alaska and Arctic Siberia, where Inuit is not spoken, the comparable terms are Inupiaq and Yupik, neither of which has gained as wide a currency in English as Inuit. While use of these terms is often preferable when speaking of the appropriate linguistic group, none of them can be used of the Eskimoan peoples as a whole; the only inclusive term remains Eskimo. The claim that Eskimo is offensive is based primarily on a popular but disputed etymology tracing its origin to an Abenaki word meaning "eaters of raw meat." Though modern linguists speculate that the term actually derives from a Montagnais word referring to the manner of lacing a snowshoe, the matter remains undecided, and meanwhile many English speakers have learned to perceive Eskimo as a derogatory term invented by unfriendly outsiders in scornful reference to their neighbors' unsophisticated eating habits.
I remember reading an article about this as well and they mentioned that these women have a very high chance of having colorblind sons. I pointed it out to a friend whom is 1 of 5 brothers, 4 of which are colorblind. I don't know if he ever looked into it.
Other options include the purchase of a Snap! server, or other brand of NAS. If you've got a little $ to throw around, NAS is the way to go. Plug it into your network, minimal setup, and your off and running. Not very upgradeable, and somewhat problematic if your drive does actually die, but I use them at the office for a zero maintenence file server.
I'd feel compelled to go in this direction if it were me. If you've old equipment around, you may be able to build this new file server for fairly cheap, but the price of new equipment compared to something like a Snap Server is insignificant in my mind.
A Snap Server 1100 with 250GB is a mere $805. At the other end of the spectrum the Snap Server 4500 with 1TB is a hair under $4500. The 4500 has handy features like snapshotting too, so if you screw up a file you can restore it at HDD speeds from a previous snapshot instead of fiddling around with tape. I'm not sure what features the lower end models have.
...but I have never understood why it has to be a single monolithic app.
I agree. Not only is it somewhat inefficient, but if one crashes, so does the other. It's not nearly as risky with Mozilla, but I remember wanting to put my head through the wall on many occasions when using Netscape 4.x. I'd be in the middle of writing a long email and browsing simultaneously, when Navigator would go down due to whatever page I was attempting to read, thus taking my half-composed email down with it.
They should definitely be running in seperate processes.
time and again i see PS2 fans getting way too excited over the xbox's financial problems. are they all totally oblivious to the benefits that have come to them due to the xbox being on the market? PS3's target release has been pushed up a year, and i suspect the recent PS2 price drop wouldn't have happened without the xbox on the market. like the xbox or not, sony is taking care to keep it from gaining a foothold, and that means better things for the consumer. if i were a PS2 fanatic, i'd want the xbox to linger on the market for as long as possible.
If MS had been allowing people to play xbox games and Sony filed a complaint and had them kicked out, you'd all be cheering Sony on. The only reason this made the news in the first place was because the article could be sold as MS oppressing the competition.
Sony broke the rules, now they suffer the consequences. This story really has nothing to do with MS. Deal with it.
I've never seen nor heard of this movie, but it should be blatantly obvious from the title that it's a Kung Fu movie, not Karate. Tiger and Crane are two of the most well known Kung Fu styles. Don't believe everything you saw in The Karate Kid, they're not even from the same country (Kung Fu: China, Karate: Japan). This may have nothing to do with Kung Pow, but it certainly doesn't add to your already low credibility.
I can't say I've ever had more fun gaming than I have with these two games. Giants may essentially be a FPS, but there's nothing else like it. Everyone should try it. The downside to both of these games is they tend to be rather demanding, altho both are still playable in a more ugly form on a slightly aging machine. The other problem is you need to get the CD cracks for them (which I believe are both readily available at gamecopyworld.com).
personally I think we should be trying to integrate some sort of large, flaming projectiles into hurricanes. with a little luck, maybe we can take out disney... or some of those old people that make driving here in upstate NY so dangerous during the summer.
This article is actually about Volkswagen's diesel technology history and how TDI (Turbo Direct Injection) came about and how it's changed over the past 25 years. After the history lesson, they go on to discuss what they're going to do with diesel in the next few years. Even though this revolves mostly around VW, they were one of the 1st companies to use it succesfully in non-commercial vehicles and they're an industry leader in the technology now.
it's often said that people are going to screw up the earth. whether it be through pollution, deforestation, or nowadays - genetic engineering. what people need to realise is that we can't screw up the earth. we can kill off species, irradiate the planet, pollute the skies, and melt the polar icecaps and the only things that's going to happen is we're going to kill ourselves. the earth is going to be just ducky. life will start again in a million years and the new inhabitants will fuck shit up all over again.
as advanced as we are, we're still subject to evolution. if we mess up, nature will kill us. you can bet on it. no amount of genome decoding can save us from that.
I live in upstate New York, Time Warner land. We're all stuck with dialup aound here. Not even good dialup (as I sit on my 31.2k connection). Starband is an option, obviously, but the outrageous pings make it useless for online gaming. I won't even get into the Radio Shack and MSN tie-ins. There's also a bit of wireless microwave access dotted about, but the rolling terrain doesn't allow many people access to the towers. ISDN is available, but difficult to get. It's hardly worth the money anyway. 2 years ago we were told we'd be getting cable access in 2008 and DSL in 2010. With the AOL-TW merge, we'll now be getting cablemodem this year. It's rumored that DSL will be arriving sooner also to compete with cable. In this case a monopoly has not only helped the consumer, but also CREATED competition. As long as AOL-TW doesn't require you to have Cable TV with your Cablemodem and doesn't require you to use AOL as your ISP (which they already announced they wouldn't), I don't see the problem here. No matter how many times you say it, people don't seem to understand that being a monopoly isn't illegal... abusing your monopoly is.
Salem is a good comparison I hadn't thought of. Everytime I hear about these things I think of Hitler's Youth. Not only are we going to persecute you with ludicrous laws/rules, but we're going to get your dearest friends and family, the people you trust most, to report you when you don't obide.
the Treo runs Palm OS. they are supposedly moving Palm OS to a linux core, but it hasn't happened yet.

Prior to that I used ipnat & ipfilter and I can't say I've had any loss of functionality.
CVT can also be found in the Audi A4 2.0 and the Honda Civic Hybrid. I'm sure there are others if you dig.
xbconnect and xlink kai will probably support it eventually, enabling xbox owners to play for free too.
again, that's not quite as nice as free right out of the box, but the point is that if you want to play online it's really no big deal either way.

not only that, but i saw most of these "new" shots a couple months ago.

if i ever decide i need office 10, this is great news. now i can get the subscription version for the lower price and then go find a crack. :)
