Doesn't seem so difficult to me.

I don't have a problem with the scientific method. However Evolution isn't PART of the scientific method, because it hasn't predicted ANYTHING. Of course it has. Experiments done on flies and bacteria have borne out the predictions of evolution, and frequently we discover fossils belonging to an intermediary species predicted by evolution. Hell, DNA itself was predicted by evolutionary theory, in particular a biological method of passing traits from parent to offspring that does NOT include traits acquired during life. Don't forget the prediction of the fused chromosome in humans.
  5. Doesn't Sony get royalties from DVDs? on XBox Adding HD Tuners Next Year · · Score: 1

I know Sony gets royalties from DVD players; the xbox 1 DVD playback kit existed to prevent Sony from profiting off every xbox sold; but I believe they get royalties for the movies as well. It would make it a no-brainer for Sony to include a DVD player in the PS2, even at little to no profit. Encouraging DVD sales means more money with little to no effort.

Microsoft, however, gets nothing from HD-DVD sales. It needs to be hit a price point where they can profit or at least minimize their losses.

This isn't something I ever thought I'd have to point out in a Slashdot discussion. Apple makes great stuff, but most of their "innovations" come from elsewhere. They just do a great job at implementing them.

  12. Re:Starcraft 2 - will it even matter? on Blizzard Hints At New StarCraft, Launches Burning Crusade · · Score: 1

While the overall numbers were smaller in WC3, most of the units were functionally the same. You had the choice of building:

    • a guy with a sword that hits things
    • a bigger guy with a sword that hits things
    • a bigger guy with 2 hammers that hits things
    • a really big guy with a really big hammer that hits things really hard
    • a flier

The powers and abilities in WC3 were too all-purpose. There was no reason not to use them as much as possible. You are right about the micromanaging... I spent most of my time in WC3 staring at the status bar instead of watching the battles.

Many players, especially new players, would simply swarm in Starcraft. Against other new players, it would degenerate into nothing more than a battle of numbers. An experienced player could easily defeat a less-experienced player with a numbers advantage by using his specialized units wisely. I was one of the best players in my group of 30 or so people exactly because of that. I rarely outproduced my opponents, but I won anyway and I did it as a Zerg player; the race who would normally rely on a numbers advantage the most.

  13. Starcraft 2 - will it even matter? on Blizzard Hints At New StarCraft, Launches Burning Crusade · · Score: 2, Interesting

Let me start by saying that Starcraft 2 will undoubtedly be wildly popular and successful and that I'm not disputing that. My real question is whether it will be any good. A number of the developers of the original left to form ArenaNet and made Guild Wars. Warcraft 3 completely lost the dynamics of Starcraft, instead becoming a contest of who-outnumbers-who. Is there anyone left at Blizzard who can make a worthy successor to Starcraft? I fear there isn't.

  14. Guild Wars on The Warhammer Online Team Responds · · Score: 2, Informative

While PvP is a prominent feature of GW, it's really not required. I advanced through the entire game (chapter 1) while only participating in a few PvP matches. There's only one point where you're required to play PvP and that's to complete the 'tutorial' section.

Some may argue that playing GW without playing PvP is missing the point, but that's an opinion that will vary with players. Certainly the focus in GW is on matching skills against another team in a complex rock-paper-scissors game, but I still found PvE to be enjoyable. The comparison has been made time and again, but it's really a lot like Magic the Gathering. You may own hundreds of skills, but you can only play with a 'deck' of 8 at any time. You define your character by your combination of skills. You specialize in one or two things and you rely on your party to cover the other bases.

Normal PvP is little more than variations on team deathmatch. GvG (guild vs guild) is a bit more glorified.

IMO, the missing piece for all these password managers is the ability to be transparent. My users already authenticate when they sign on in the morning. There's no reason they should have to further authenticate to get into our processing software or QuickBooks or anything else. These password managers should be able to create special Windows shortcuts that will launch the application and automatically type the name and password for you. It has all the info it needs... name, password, path to executable. When you create a "special" shortcut, it's actually running the password manager's executable with an identifier for the app. The PM launches the app you want and, after a configurable delay, automatically completes the login process for you.

  23. Credit Due - Sega on Nintendo Revolution Controller Revealed · · Score: 1
Like it or not, and regardless of what you think of their consoles, Nintendo has been responsible for every single important controller innovation for the last 25 years.

While perhaps not of the magnitude of the D-pad, Sega was first with analog triggers (Saturn controller). They've since been copied by the xbox and the Gamecube. In some games shoulder buttons are just as good, but in other games nothing beats triggers.

I just stumbled upon this page which has a "family tree" of game controllers. Interesting to browse and somewhat nostalgic.

The Revolution controller intrigues me, but I'm undecided if it's going to be that great. I'll have to try it to see. I really hope it feels better than the Gamecube controller. Button-layout opinions aside, Nintendo's controllers have felt cheap to me ever since N64. Holding a PS or xbox controller, they feel more substantial... better made, to me. My Dreamcast controllers feel rather cheap as well.
