  1. RyBBS representin' on Best BBS Memories? · · Score: 1

Circa 1990, while in college at Lawrence University I ran RyBBS, written by Greg Ryan, from my dorm room (in Plantz Hall, the jock dorm) at night, from 7pm to 7am. The hardware was a Tandy IBM 8088 and a 2400 baud modem. Memories:

    • Forgetting to turn it on, answewing a phone call, and hearing a shy female voice timidly ask "Um, is the BBS running?" I said "oops, I'll turn it on now," hung up, fired the BBS up, and proceeed to have a conversation with the caller.
    • My friends complaining that when they would try to call me they would be greated with a shrieking sound.
    • Whenever a converstation with the sysop (me) was requested, my printer would print out the request. (I don't recall why this was a good idea. Maybe something to do with multitasking.) One of my friends told this girl that would hang out in my room that I was running a speech recognition program and my computer was processing our conversations. She believed him.

You can get ten three-button logitechs for $59.99 from CompUSA. You should get ten, because they are an endangered species.

I found these when I was lamenting the demise of 3 button mice. In despair I bought a 7-button logitech with scrollwheel. I never knew what I was missing. I will never go back.

The real challenge would be to find a ~$20 3-button optical mouse (for PCs, not Sun).

Congratulations on surviving /.ing. I have a few questions.

How were LVS and HA configured? With two systems, I can only guess that each was a real server (using the LVS terminology). Also both would be load balancers, with one being selected as active using HA.

How did using HA or LVS help surivive a /.ing? Were there failovers? How many? When? Why? If surviving /.ing consisted of a high rate of failovers then the hardware wasn't up to the job.

What is the "automated backup system?" Are you rsyncing the contents? From each other? From another system? Or does it refer to regular "tar" backups to tape?

Having separate UPSs is overkill, unless the one UPS could not handle the load of both systems.

Is there any dynamic content on the servers? Databases? How was keeping these synchronized handled?

The Antec SX1040BII definitely has a filter for the intake fans, as indicated in the link and because I have one. It doesn't meet your requirements because it has 4x80mm fans, not 2x120mm. The one I got has a good Antec Truepower 400W power supply. It was $80 at CompUSA (I needed a case fast).

I would suspect that since there is not explicit mention of a filter on Antec's page for the SLK3700AMB that it doesn't have a filter.

You may want to head over to the Case and Cooling Fetish forum at Ars Technica and search for filter-related posts. Some members there know their stuff. The two tips I gleaned were:

    • Have positive pressure in the case, i.e., more suck than blow. Otherwise, air will be sucked in through the cracks in the case, not the filters.
    • Used fabric softener sheets make good filters. Others in the forum have found cheap filter material at Home Depot.
  23. Re:Why do we need tlds? on Plans For New TLDs · · Score: 2

Technically, I don't think there is any reason why this couldn't happen. However, it wouldn't work in the current hierachy because the root name servers would become overloaded. However, if we added implicit dots between each letter (or two letters) then at each letter (or group of two letters) only 26 different (or 676) name server records would need to be kept. There would be additional IN A records but there shouldn't be that many.

Now, to look up brian.norton we certainly don't want to have to do 11 DNS requests. Caching would become very important. The TTLs would need to be very large. Possibly, the entire caching mechanism would need to be redesigned, e.g., cache forever until told the data has changed the IP addrs of name servers for n, on, ton, rton, orton, norton, nnorton, annorton, iannorton, riannorton, and briannorton (in this scheme the dots would become syntatic sugar). Any changes would be propagated up so that if the name server for nnorton changed the next time a query for www.brian.norton was made the result would contain the additional information that the name server for nnorton has changed and the client should ask the name server for norton what the new name servers for nnorton are.
