I know when I went through Power School, then went to NNTP, they made me learn a ridiculous amount of crap that I never thought I'd use. Turns out I never used most of it. Looking back I am grateful they taught me all that they did (although I don't remember most of it now) because it could have saved my life and the lives of those around me.

What about when so many things start being called a cyberemergency that they just get to look at whatever traffic they want, whenever they want? You don't think that will happen? That's exactly why the last administration was so unpopular. Just substitute the words terrorist attack for the word cyberemergency.

The language scares me to death. The existing laws are there for a purpose. To create a law that circumvents them on a whim, even if it's a whim that has to be defended later, is total bull.

Power in the modern world comes from directing the efforts of the society of which we are a part. If that power that comes from leverage rather than the abiding support of the people that make up the society, it is tyranny. Contracts are the mechanism by which that tyranny is enforced. They are the mechanism that has been used to turn us against ourselves and cause us to labor relentlessly for arbitrary and wasteful things while the important things are being neglected and allowed to fall apart.

How does a contract constitute tyranny? Let's look at what a contract actually is. From Wikipedia:

A contract is an exchange of promises between two or more parties to do or refrain from doing an act which is enforceable in a court of law

A contract in and of itself is not used to browbeat people. If you enter into a contract by force, it's called coercion and it's not enforceable. However, if two free parties enter into a contract it is nothing more than a promise to hold up your end of a bargain. Living by your word does not equal tyranny.

Yes, shame on the faulty system. However, just because something is done to the letter of the law doesn't mean it's done with the spirit of the law in mind. Of course this may be EXACTLY the kind of thing this loophole was designed for.

Is there any way they can retract it during a vote next week when they thought they were going to vote for it? I don't know how French law works.

While I agree with most of what you're saying (even if I don't agree with where most of the blame goes), I don't know that I agree with the following:

So shame on those living in France expecting anything different from their dumb system.

If you are born somewhere, sometimes it is difficult to leave. Some people just don't have the resources or skills to leave a country and start a new life somewhere else (I know I'm finding it pretty difficult right now). What other choices do they have if the politicians don't listen to the people?

The EU will probably shut this down anyway. We'll just have to see.

No, it isn't. Not ever, and not in either direction (for or against Big Al in this particular case). This is why we have science, which is there to PROVE whether or not a thing is true. Belief is a great starting point, but it will never be enough in and of itself.

Because, believe it or not, things do happen naturally without human intervention sometimes. There could be a lot of things causing it, but it's probably the same things that cause storms here on earth (no, not giant weather making machines). The fact that it's large and red doesn't change how storms are created. It's actually pretty amazing that it's been tracked since the 1870s and is still happening, but that shouldn't affect how it was created in the first place.

I also hold the very unpopular viewpoint that it's basically a slap in the face to an artist to view their work before they're done with it. I also find it laughable that anyone would seek this out aside from people involved in movie production or people interested in this process to study. Do I think it will hurt the movie or cause any amount of financial loss? No, it's merely disrespectful and actually kind of humorous that anyone would ruin the initial exposure of what could amount to a great film.

I don't know about a slap in the face, but even as an amateur artist I don't like people seeing anything I do before it is complete. It's not laughable that someone would seek it out, however, it's human nature. There is a LOT of hype surrounding this film. A lot of people that are interested in the film want to be the first to see it, comment on it, bash it, or whatever. It's the same as the people screaming FIRST POST here.

You'll see them say things like "I tried insert distro of choice here) and it couldn't do anything! I don't see what it is you nerds get out of this! You're just stroking your own egos by using it".

The problem isn't that there are no critics as it is the loudmouths on both sides of the spectrum drowning out the quieter middle voices. The last time I spent any time on a *nix forum was shortly after Ubuntu came out (I was using Linux long before that, but I always like to try out new distros...Slackware is still my one true love).
