Hymn changes your protected .m4p files to unencrypted AAC (.m4a) files, the same files that would be produced if you ripped a CD with iTunes. Unless new iPod firmware revisions prevent you from playing music that you ripped from CD, that front is pretty safe. A more realistic problem is that Apple changes the FairPlay encryption, but they've already done that once and Hymn caught up almost overnight.

You make a good point, but here's a few more things to consider that many people forget to figure in the equation.

    * These can never be cheaper than plain glass, because no matter how far the price drops you can always build the same thing minus the solar collector and get it even cheaper

    * When you spend more money to save in the long run, you are judging a present value versus multiple future values. To get an accurate number you need to take the initial price difference of the inefficient model and the efficient model, invest that at a given rate, and calculate the compound interest each year until the year that the efficient model would supposedly "pay itself off". Then take the cost savings each investment period from the more efficient model, and invest that in to a growing account at the same rate and figure out the compound interest on that for the same period. Graph it out in Excel and you might be surprised at the results, and think twice when someone tries to sell you something that will "pay itself off in x years".

One thing you've glazed over is the definition of morality. If you know for a fact that the stock prices of companies involved with prisons are going to go up, aren't you morally obligated to your family and yourself to invest in that company? Just like a company frivolously spending money is an immoral act that hurts shareholders, throwing away your own money by not making the smart investment could also be seen as an immoral act. The welfare and livelihood of potential inmates is a concern, but some people would argue that your family and your own well being would come before them.

No, you are mixing up cause and effect. Investing money in to companies or sectors that benefit from an increase in inmates does not cause more people to be thrown in jail. It just means you are able to recognize future trends and benefit from them.

    Neither will the recipient.

This won't suffice as a full method of communication like calling someone up or sending someone an e-mail, because the two parties have to establish when the message is going to be sent, where it will be sent to, and how the recipient will pick up and decode the message. If that was done over a tapped VoIP line the fact that you encrypted and attempted to hide the payload is kind of beside the point.

You can't tell the difference between a well rebuilt transmission and a poorly rebuilt one? That's too bad. A good transmission is what you get when you take someone genuinely skilled in the art of Automotive Repair and a depth of knowledge in the problem domain and the tools to be used.

A bad transmission rebuild, on the other hand, is what you get when you give "Auto Repair For Dummies" to a physicist. The result may "work" for certain values of work, but the transmission will ultimately be unmaintainable, short-lived, not performance tuned, and generally very crappy.

It's similar to if I have a degree in Automotive Repair, and I go out and design a building. It may function (and even remain upright for a few years), but the design will ultimately fail, because I lack the deep skills necessary to do a good job.
