I'd love to agree with you, but if african companies mass produce generic AIDS drugs, there's not exactly a motivation to research new ones.

I'm guessing that a poor african isn't going to make much difference to a pharmaceutical's bottom line, but if generics are made in one part of the world, it's just a matter of time before they flow back to the west.

Which, as an added bonus is not a large drum filled with a highly compressed and volatile gas.

f push comes to shove, many donaters would not volunteer

The converse of this is also true.
Not everyone has the time to volunteer, many do important jobs that allow very little free time. These people are important contributors to society and should be free to influence the political process if they wish.
Like it or not, politics costs money. Advertising is only a part of it. A political party has to pay for:

    -office space and costs
    -staff
    -advertising
    -legal advice
    -auditing etc.

Smaller parties such as the greens would be royally screwed because without having elected reps they get none of the resources afforded to the major parties.

For a really healthy democracy, you'd need to get rid of political donations completely.

    I'm not sure I agree.

A lot of people sit back and talk a lot, but when push comes to shove, they are unwilling to make a personal sacrifice to realise their ideals.
Donations are a measurable way for someone who really cares to do more than just cast a ballot.
Obviously there need to be caps on how much influence a rich business man can have, but that's just a matter of drawing the line in a sensible place.

IMHO, companies are another matter entirely.

Agreed, and a miserable time was had by those who lived through it.

I'm not saying everyone is going to die. However some of the more exciting possibilities of global warming include:
-the gulf stream switching off (it's what makes the temperature in western europe different to siberia)
-the sea level rising and covering low lying land -increased frequency and intensity of storms
    -more droughts etc. etc.

I'm not claiming all these are going to happen, but nobody can deny that all these possibilities are VERY, VERY serious.
It's absolutely reprehensible for politicians to give the benefit of the doubt to special interest groups (coal and oil companies) rather than the general consensus of scientists worldwide.

And don't reply by saying "kyoto is designed to hamstring the US economy". If the US government is serious about climate change but doesn't like kyoto, where is their alternative proposal?

Throwing a couple of billion at hydrogen over the next few years doesn't count. Hydrogen won't solve anything because it's an energy storage medium rather than source, and not a very efficient one at that.

What is the hysteria over a few bacteria? I rinse my plates in cold water without soap until they look clean. They ARE clean!
If there's lots of grease, I use hot water and detergent if that doesn't work.
And you know what? I never get sick, and I use fuck all energy, way less water AND I don't pump the rivers full of detergents.
