  1. Case in point re class action lawsuits on Classmates.com Settles Lawsuit Over Phony Friends · · Score: 2, Interesting

There are many class action lawsuits that end up being complete BS like this one. The lawyers made a ton of money and the people scammed get $2. Not that classmates dot com deserves any sympathy whatsoever. IMO they should be forced out of business, because the only thing this will do is make them get even more "creative" with their advertising and spam.

At the same time I haven't got a lot of sympathy by anyone taken in by the classmates scam. Darwin should be allowed to work his magic at some point. The first time I got spam from classmates dot com it took me exactly 2 seconds to evaluate the "service" and decide it was a bullshit operation.

Having said all that, I wouldn't want to see class action lawsuits go away entirely. The laws that govern them do need an overhaul IMO.

  2. They missed the internet rush on Microsoft Spends $9 Billion On Research, Focuses On Cloud · · Score: 1

Back when MS missed getting in on the rise of the internet, they played catch-up for years. They didn't "get" the internet at first, and that cost them dearly for a while. To this day MS is not really known as an internet leader.

Back then it was obvious they weren't doing it right. And today they're still not doing it right because they've swung the other way, apparently, and overestimated the importance of cloud computing in the future. Oh well, it's their money and they can afford to flush it.

  3. Well duh! on Beliefs Conform To Cultural Identities · · Score: 1

Years ago I was taught there are 3 takes on reality: the way you see it, the way you want it to be, and the way it really is. TFA seems to be covering absoulutely nothing new in the world. That this comes as a surprise to anyone is the only newsworthy aspect of the story. It's how humans operate for the most part.

  4. Fail for buying from Pizza Hut after seeing an ad on Power To the Pop-Ups · · Score: 1

Ugh. And no. People already have the option of not blocking popups in most browsers. Let those who want to see the ads disable the blocking feature. Not me, not today, not tomorrow, not ever.

And seriously .... Pizza Hut? Chainstore pizza = fail without exception.

  5. Banking Reform on Paypal Reverses Payments Made To Indians · · Score: 5, Insightful

Banking reform in the US should include subjecting PayPal to all the rules and regulations that apply to banks. I find it strange how they've managed to avoid being classed as a bank all these years in the first place. Current regulations leave a lot to be desired, but making PayPal adhere to them would be a good first step.

  6. NASA TV? What's that? on Critics Call For NASA TV To "Liven Up" · · Score: 1

NASA TV or NASA Select, whatever they're calling it these days, is not carried by my local cable company. This is a cable company that serves millions in the NY Metropolitan area (outside of NYC itself). Several of my friends and I have called them requesting that they carry it every few months for years now. Nothing. Before dumbing down the content for the Dancing Survivor crowd they should focus on getting more cable companies to carry the damn channel in the first place.

I can't count the number of museums I've visited where the whizbang kiosks/interactive displays/demonstrations were out of order. From the lowliest county historical society exhibition to the Smithsonian in DC. Whatever you do, keep an up-to-date set of troubleshooting and repair procedures as you go along. Something easy to follow so that even a simpleton volunteer will be able to get the thing back up and running.

  10. Have you SEEN the Newsday site? on Paywalls To Drive Journalists Away In Addition To Consumers? · · Score: 1

You should take a look at this abomination of a news website. It's laughable to think that ANYONE in their right mind would pay for access to such a thing. Of course, it's owned by the same guys who own the Madison Square Garden NYC sports teams and a big suburban NYC cable company, so they think they know it all. javascript :: Newsday as NY Knicks :: Pro Basketball

I stopped going there earlier this year when they rolled out their new look. Seriously, they would have to pay me to visit that site on a regular basis.

  11. Veteran Violation Chasers? Really? on How Hardware Makers Come To Violate Free Software Licenses · · Score: 1

For years Harald Welte has been the only serious chaser I know of. These two have been keeping their work a secret, I guess. More power to them if they're actually tracking down GPL violators, whoever they are. This task is thankless and unappreciated. Most authors can't be bothered.

  13. Everything in focus is usually considered a flaw on Panasonic 3D TV Does Not Disappoint · · Score: 3, Insightful

Depth of field is important to film makers. They don't want everything to be in focus. It looks too much like video instead of film. For live sporting events, that may be fine, but the fact that the movie trailer looked like shit is no surprise at all.

  14. Diskless workstations at last? on Has the WebOS Finally Arrived? · · Score: 5, Insightful

I have been working for over 20 years with various people who proclaim the dawn of the Era Of The Diskless Workstation is upon us. Cloud computing seems to be another instance of this class. I predict it's going to NOT be the "next big thing". The next big bubble of bullshit is more like it.

  15. Ralph Kramden can buy one now on Sony To Launch 3D TVs By Late 2010 · · Score: 1

That was his excuse for not buying a TV for his wife back in the '50s. He was waiting for 3D TV. Of course, he's dead now, and that should be a lesson to tech buyers who put off their purchases thinking it will be cheaper and better next year. OK, so maybe the days of "better" are over, but it will almost definitely be cheaper.

  16. Trust Word of Mouth Only on EA Spends 3x More On Marketing Than Development · · Score: 1

I trust "word of mouth" only. Odds are any review you read is bought and paid for. Any forum posters singing the praises of a title are probably made by paid shills who are astroturfing. Unless a friend or someone I know recommends a game to me, I don't believe anything I read. This goes for gaming forums and magazines, too. Ginning up a viral buzz is more important than putting together a quality game these days, and TFA basically proves the point.

So it seems that the whistleblower is Borg. The only thing missing is the part about resistance being futile. Which it seems to be when you're dealing with Verizon, so maybe that part's implied.

  20. Optimum Online in NY also started recently on Comcast the Latest ISP To Try DNS Hijacking · · Score: 2, Informative

They've got about 3 million subscribers in the NY metro area (CT, NJ and NY excluding Manhattan). They just started doing this a couple of months ago. I noticed it when my DNS queries started failing completely. Seems I had changed my DNS servers to ones not owned by Optimum (aka Cablevision) because of speed issues, and with their most recent change they're also blocking DNS queries directed to servers other than their own.

Don't look for the latest net neutrality bill to fix this. All that is is the ISPs making the bag of bribes bigger until the greed of Congress can no longer resist.

  21. At times I mourn the SSC in Texas on Large Hadron Collider Struggling · · Score: 3, Insightful

If we ever are to control things like gravity and other exotic properties of spacetime it will be with insight and knowledge gained through particle physics theory and experimentation. Sometimes I wonder what discoveries we turned our backs on by cancelling the Superconducting Supercollider that was to be built in Texas. It was cancelled in 1993 in the face of cost overruns. When you look at the history of that project, however, it's clear that it NEEDED to be cancelled. It had become a black hole for money because of design and construction cost overruns. It was more out of control than any strange particles it might have produced. I hope the Large Hadron Collider doesn't suffer the same fate, but it doesn't bode well for the future when the overall design and QC on the manufactured components are now being called into question. Sad. When ambitious projects such as these founder it's usually their own fault.
