The simulator was not powered in this test, so I would assusme if it had been it would have had engines that would have fired to cause it to continue it's trajectory and achieve and maintain orbit.
Spain is a country in which thousands of people are homeless and thousands of others live in squalor. Where is the government getting the money to waste on the stupid foolishness that is world exploration at a time like this? The New World is a frontier for our great-grandchildren to consider, as for us, perhaps we should get to work solving our religious struggles or feeding Africa. There is more than enough prosperity, more than enough resources in the world for everyone to have food and shelter and clean water and even leather shoes. Instead, we fund explorers and give the navy endless resources that will produce nothing of value for the average human being.
Yeah that's what he said... I think you somehow missed that. The bad thing about slashdot is that once you make a mistake like that, it pretty much stays that way...forever. How embarrassing for you. As further proof of your misreading, just before he said "...the only telco in Australia..." he said "...connecting a bunch of countries."
You realize you just quoted that guy (bertok) to himself claiming he misread his own post and was arguing with himself rather than the AC parent poster? Too bad this is Slashdot where that shit stays there forever, how embarrassing for you;)
I can't say for sure, but with the popularity of large dog breeds such as Golden and Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherds and Dalmatians it's possible that your 25-pound dogs are a bit below the average.
I'm not sure feeding your dog all the leftovers from your meals counts as zero waste when you consider the other crazy options like cooking portions you can actually eat or eating leftovers every now and then. Yea, often the leftovers won't add up to a full meal but you can have one night towards the end of the week where you have a buffet style of leftover options.
Granted you'll probably still have some waste, but if you have enough leftovers to regularly feed a large dog properly your definitely cooking incorrect portions.
*sigh* Yes, my over the top example of how much life sucked back then doesn't have sound historical basis. But how you get from that to claiming everything of "substance" (however the hell you define that) is exactly the same now as it was then is mind boggling. How about Serfdom? You truly claim that this often forced inherited bondage in all aspects of ones lives is exactly the way it is today in all forms of "substance" just differing slightly by degree?
The only way I see your argument of the relationship between rich and poor being pretty much the same as it always has been making sense is if by relationship you mean the rich have money and the poor have significantly less.
Used to mean that when and where? Not in the United States. The constitution specifically mentions an impartial jury from the same state or district. While people who "knew of" the person might end up on the jury in early history I suppose, it is more likely this is due to the small size of communities than any expressed right. Anyone who knew the defendant or accuser well would be at issue with the constitution on grounds of impartiality.
If anything it has become more like "trail by peers" as we have moved forward in history. Jurors used to be routinely dismissed due to race and social status. Now most courts have adopted strategies that ensure jury pools more accurate reflect the makeup of the community.
Well for one, your comparing the ability of record companies to take you to a court judged by your peers to sue you for copyright abuse with the ability of the feudal lord to come to your hovel and fuck your fiance on your kitchen table (if your lucky enough to have one) before you get married. I know everyone likes to be all dramatic and scream that their being raped by the record companies but it's a bit different in the physical sense.
The second comment on the article page itself reads:
how do you get funding? Is your daddy influential? I want some (for something more useful, and along the same lines as your skiier)
CONTACT ME, I dare you. gpscOSPAMruise@gmail.com
That guy is seriously going to regret that now that this page is on slashdot, lol.
Which of those numbers demonstrates the company squashing a technology that would solve our energy problems?
1. The company made a profit during a recession? Well hell, that's the last thing we need anyone doing for our economy during a recession. How are we ever going to get out of a recession if these companies keep trying to make money ?!
2.I don't recall the mandate that every company be required to have a green energy division. Exxon is not your keeper or steward, their not responsible for looking out for your best interests. They're a company, their job is to sell a product and make money. How much money has Red Hat and Apple put into researching bio-fuels and wind farms? What companies are required to do so in order to not be considered evil?
3. I don't even know how this is even remotely related. It's dealing with a complaint that Exxon isn't providing the correct amount of discount for customers paying with cash versus using a credit card. What does cash vs credit card discounts have to do with squashing green energy technology/progress?
4. Exxon offers money to scientists to research and find problems with research about a topic that affects their business. Whoopdeefuckingdoo.
5. Now Exxon agreeing with you about global warming makes them evil, when them disagreeing with you made them evil before. I'm sure if they were 'neutral' on the matter they would be evilly standing by while the world suffered as well.
6. Exxon Mobile is successfully fined millions of dollars by the City of New York in a trial after they broke a law.
Bad thing for a company to do? yes
Demonstrative of squashing a green technology? No
Demonstrative of ability to get local officials in their back pockets to avoid things they don't want? Exactly the opposite
7&8. companies contribute campaign money. OK, this is kind of broad, a lot of companies do, care to elaborate which of these campaign contributions stopped all this federally funded green technology research that's going on?
7 version 2: They've changed their minds on the global warming issues to please politicians so politicians can please us? So.....their listening to our concerns and wants because their interested in making money? Sounds like a good thing for us.
How the hell can you trust a corporation to handle the military security? No really, who the fuck had this brilliant idea?
Just about every American Legislature, Commander-in-Chief, Personnel Investigator, and military officer in the history of our nation?
I mean seriously, where do you think our military equipment is built and researched? There's not a factory somewhere with a bunch of army privates putting m-16's together. The vast majority of our military technology and equipment is produced and researched by private corporations. That's because the brightest minds get drawn in by the highest paycheck, and that's not usually offered by government/military positions.
So you would suggest this problem is so large and dangerous that each small region of the country should produce energy for themselves only and no energy trading should occur or do you only wish to address the first half of my sentence? Yes, there's risk, yes, it's a difficult problem. But the question at hand is whether it's so risky and dangerous that we should avoid it and forgo the benefits.
Personally I see one bad cascade failure amongst years of presumably lower energy prices and more efficient use of energy resources.
I'd counter by saying it's more an economic problem. A Blackout means no one is drawing power, which means no one is paying for power, and a plant having to SCRAM or shut down due to a sudden drop or increase in demand means they aren't producing power. This can cost the power company in question Millions per day, so I would think that as a company they would have an extremely strong financial incentive to safeguard against blackouts.
Of course this assumes the engineers can adequately convince their management of the need to invest in said infrastructure to avoid financial loss due to blackouts and from talking to some of the engineers responsible before that big cascading blackout in the NE a few years back that is exactly what they were complaining about having trouble doing.
I guess in lieu of that though it does fall back to the government to force the investment to occur.
Does that honestly seem to you like such a huge and difficult problem that couldn't possibly be safeguarded against or solved that we should forgo the ability to provide cheaper electricity across the country? I feel like there's probably been an Engineer or two that's looked at the whole changing demands on a power grid problem during the last half century or so.
I can see how that can be confusing seeing as how language is completely static and the majority of the world refers to both South and North America together when using the words "America" and "American".
Those damn United Statesmans, thinking they can refer to their own country however they please.
So every citizen whether arrested for excessive speeding or serial murder/rape should be able to roam free to ask questions of scientists, gather evidence, and prepare a case? And every citizen should be comfortable with public speaking, questioning of witnesses, and gaining the trust of an audience?
Or every citizen that might end up on a jury duty should just be able to understand everything a scientist says about any field? Or every scientist should be good at public speaking and explaining things to a jury?
OR, we could have some sort of profession whose job it is do do all those things...
And being better liked or less hated by the kind of people willing to purposefully kill thousands of innocent people is clearly a goal our country should aspire to.
and Israel hate America way worse than they did before. He waged two wars killing millions. You know what nevermind this.
I'm not sure how that would explain me receiving a mass mailing of a DVD stressing the danger of the Muslim jihad and stressing the national defense [ie Mccain] shortly before the election that I'm pretty sure was paid for by Israeli Special Interest Groups.
Also, Nuclear Armageddon if Obama hadn't gotten elected? Really? That would have made a great campaign commercial:
"Obama is in favor of Stem Cell Research. If McCain is elected, there won't be any Stem Cell Research. Why? Because he plans to end the world in a fiery nuclear holocaust. If you don't support nuclear blasts rending the flesh from your loved one's bones be sure to vote Democrat this November"
Yea, I get the feeling that's just a sensationalist flag the media likes to wave to make the story more interesting. I think the real reason here is kids installing p2p software without the parents knowledge and the sharing the my documents folder or the whole C: drive including all the parents tax returns and other personal information.
Did someone forget to inform this senator that we (the US) no longer own the internets?
Did someone forget to inform you that p2p software generally installs on a machine in a physical location and therefore is subject to the laws and regulations in that location? Just because your machine is able to talk to machines in a different country doesn't mean your machine is somehow above the laws of the country you live in.
The simulator was not powered in this test, so I would assusme if it had been it would have had engines that would have fired to cause it to continue it's trajectory and achieve and maintain orbit.

Wow Britain, you just got told to take "more aggressive action" by CANADIANS. Talk about called out.

If your car has a "park" setting then you're probably not driving a stick shift or manual/standard transmission hence your different experience ;)
He's referring to parking a car by leaving it in gear pointing up the hill, rather than using the emergency or hand brake.

Because everyone grew up watching Star Trek which clearly shows all computer interfaces are supposed to become glass touchscreens dangit!
