I agree with the 90%/10% ratio of bandwidth usage for people who are using it for file sharing versus more legitimate means, However, that doesn't say that I agree with limiting the available resources to students. In an ideal educational setting, I see that resources are just an afterthought to the main purpose of experimenting and creating new ideas and frontiers. What about those few hackers that are sitting at terminals, thinking of ways to bring high quality content to the masses? Intertwining video with embedded code? Watermarking audio to encapsulate neilson-esque ratings? These sorts of ideas need high bandwidth to experiment with because you never know what the future will hold if you allow the resources to be there for them.

  10. Class Action? on Do Manufacturers Adequately Support Their Products? · · Score: 1

I have run into the a similar problem with Dell's tech support. My parents just gave me one of their old laptops to do development on, and yes, it is out of warranty. However, I upgraded the machine to a new OS and it stopped supporting an extra battery that I had for it. So I contacted their tech support.

The person contacted me back and pointed me to a BIOS update to use in Win95 (I was running Win98SE on the machine), and thinking that updating a BIOS is just the same as on a desktop, I ran the util. Lo and behold, it fried the BIOS and the computer now refuses to boot. (My guess is that the BIOS update util had something tweaked for the specific OS, and the update util didn't work correctly in Win98).

Anyways, I contacted Dell support again, and told the guy what happened, he told me to use a different BIOS update utility (this one was for Win98), but didn't understand that my computer refused to even acknowledge the BIOS its self anymore and needed to have the chip replaced.

I emailed him back about the discrepency between the emails, noted that yes, a BIOS update shouldn't be dependent on the OS involved, HOWEVER, when I used the first util he directed me to (and in his first response he said he totally understood my email) it ruined my BIOS and the computer wasn't functional anymore. He then said that I could send the computer in for repairs and since it wasn't under warranty, it'd cost $900 to repair. (the computer is probably worth $300, citing EBay auctions). I coughed and said no, this was their issue since they misdirected me to a wrong utility and it had ruined my computer, it didn't matter if it was under warranty or not.

I keep emailing them at least 3 times a week forwarding my last response, and they don't answer back anymore. I'm wondering if there are many others in this predicament, many enough to where we can slap a class action for undersupporting their products?

That's why they make post-bacc degrees and courses. A 4 year degree gives you a basis, the following studies will give you a good focus. Overall, a 4 year university degree will outweigh a technical school education (ITT) or AA degree and such. With a full university degree, you are exposed to many more situations and surroundings than if you just focused on one topic. Now, I don't know about you, but for those people whom went to ITT to get that "web developer" certificate, and has now joined the ranks of the dot.gone, they either a) have to go back for a different degree in another specialized field b) or else go for the full fledged thing c) or work at Starbucks.

I did my 4 years, and another 2 years on post-bacc work in my field (Comp Sci), and right now I am working for a medical billing company taking their whole application from DOS based to a winblows based application, all through black-box exposure. I can say that all facets of my education are being put to the test, analytical, quanitative and communication in all aspects.

If all I knew was how to make the mouse hit the button, it'd take a miracle for anything to coalesce. So no, I don't think that my 4+ years were a waste, because I know that if this job disappears from me, I have the necessary background to traverse many different fields of work.

The high school I went to (Benson Polytechnic High School) actually gave me a lot of motivation in a different way. It was a "magnet" high school where we had to choose a major subject to persue during the last 2 years of high school. The first of these years I spent in Computer Science.

When I was in high school I also worked on the side 20 hours/week and was busy with playing soccer for the high school, so a lot of free extracurricular time was put towards those, and unlike the others in the CS major, I didn't put that time towards the many science clubs that were available after school. My teacher didn't like this, and basically told me that I would never be good at computers, and if I wanted to achieve decent grades, I should vacate his class. (which I did, went into architecture and got A's in there instead).

But this is the kicker, I've been using computers since I was about 4 (I'm 24 now), and computers were just natural to me. So once I went into college, I persued my CS degree in spite of that previous high school teacher.

I graduated with a BS in CS and am right now persuing my Masters in CS at Oregon State University. I made it a point all through my collegiate experience to make a trip at least once a year back to that teacher to let him know how I'm progressing. :] I've always been that type of person though.. tell me I can't do it.. I'll prove you wrong.
