  1. that isn't capitalism. on SDMI Cracked Too Soon · · Score: 1

the seller needs to appease the buyer to survive. as shown countless times in the last few decades (divX anyone?) people want nothing to do with technology that doesnt improve on its comptetition except to take away more of their fair use rights. SDMI has already failed, its a forgone conclusion, unless they can come up with some extrememly compelling reasons for me to take the time, energy and money to trade my mp3s for their product. which is highly unlikely, and even if they do many people wont go for it becuase mp3 is entenched and easily good enough.

I can think of an extrememly wonderful use for color: Maps. I dont know if you've ever used Avantgo or other map program on the palm, but i for one find it next to useless without color. In this instance (and many others) using color can really communicate a lot more information in the same space. Now if only they could address the resolution/battery life issues...

  4. Re:journalistic integrity on /. ? is that a joke? on KDE to RMS: That's Absurd. · · Score: 2

I can't tell if you are joking or not, because this is the best description of slashdot I've ever read. I love /. for its rapid lassoing of information from all over the web, but i wish (naively?) they could chose their stories a bit more responsibly. I seriously think if there were no slashdot there would be about 20% of the KDE/GNOME flamewar. Oh well.

  6. Good point on KDE to RMS: That's Absurd. · · Score: 1

While i disagree with RMS' tone and motivation, he is factually and legally supported. The KDE team broke the license of GPL code and they are legally denied the continued right to distribute it. They try to play it down in this rebuttal: "a small bit in kmidi and a few lines in kghostview. Of course they did correct their errors and RMS' attack is way off base (as he can often be) but this response from KDE is just as silly.

  7. competition is good on KDE to RMS: That's Absurd. · · Score: 3

Meaningless devisive and unendling flamewars are not. Why can't slashdot show a little restraint and try to rise just a little bit above the level of toilet stall door graphitti? This "article" is complete gibberish and belongs nowhere on a website that proclaims itself to be a news source. Please either spin off the "Slashdot Rumour Mill and Flamewar" site, or show that you know a little bit about journalistic integrity.

  8. Re:RIAA Bad. Napster Bad. MPAA Bad. DeCSS Good. on RIAA Responds to Napster - Raises Serious Questions · · Score: 1

yes they will. there will be little utilities that will run song titles through an "encoder ring", turn it into cypher text, the user will search on using that text, and then the results will be converted back. in fact, this could easily be added seamlessly into the use interface of gnutella et al. what everyone needs to realize is that this CANNOT be stopped.

Insightful?!? This isn't "adding junk" to the mozilla code base, it is a XML application designed to run primarily on Mozilla, but could run on any other browser that cared to support web standards. This is like saying the the linux.org web site is adding junk to netscape 4.7. How does shit like this get moderated up??

  10. Re:Doesn't that say it all........ on Gnucash v1.4.0 Released · · Score: 1

This is really very unfair. this is only version 1.4, it is still a very very young product. When given equal development time/energy, free software usually meet and surpasses the feature set of commercial apps (see bash vs. dos command shell for an example) and is in a completely separate realm in terms of stability. Give this project time to mature and you will be very nicely surprised.

  11. Its wave table, but can it load samples. on Pilot Synthesis · · Score: 1

What would really make this into a killer product would be if they would allow you to do true wavetable synthesis (not that dsp intesive, bargain SB clones do it) ... ie let you load your own samples into the unit. that would make this a remarcable buy. I would pay $500+ for something like that. General Midi would be passable so i could jot down sketches quickly, but i would LOVE to be able to go and play a show at a club bringing only my palm V :)

Anyone know of anything like this?

  12. maybe you need to read more about copyright law on Do-It-Yourself Sue Napster Software · · Score: 1

I have the explicit right to title my works anything i want. Check up on that, its true. This program makes no attemp to discern if this is really a metallica track, or simply a file with the word metallica in it (this turns into a really big problem when you consider that groups like Bush or Live might start to use this crappy software) I really dont think that any evidence gathered by this bot would stand for one millisecond in court. sorry.

This kind of snooping is so obviously a violation of privacy, i wonder if it is already covered with existing laws. If you took your car to a Jiffy Loob for an oil change, and they decided to install a GPS enabled oil-filter and they then logged all you travels in a database, there would be a huge public outcry, and probably a slew of lawsuits. 20. Re:One feature is necesary on What Is Important In A User Interface? · · Score: 1

It is quite unfortunate that masses are mixing up the notions of system functionality and of the actual science of User Interface.

It maybe a necessary functional requirement for an operating system to allow scripting capability, however user interface has actually nothing to do with that.

Scripting should be an essential part of a GUI. Apple has taken steps towards this (I've not really used it yet, and wonder how well it works), but until we are able to graphically/intuitively show the computer a task, and tell which set of objects to enact it on, computer UI's will remain in the dark ages where they are now. XMLTerm is taking great strides towards slick intergration of GUI and CLI, which is one step towards the future.

  21. Gtk+ and Glade on Cross-Platform Development Tools? · · Score: 1

Gtk+ is very nice to use and is totally free (GPL) across multiple platforms (Win32/BeOS/*Nix). In spite of the fact that it is written in Object Oriented C, it is quite easy and nice to use with C++. Also, Gtk-- is a C++ wrapper that is supposed to be very nice as well, and they have a Win32 port going on right now. When you add Glade (visual gui builder) into the mix, you get a very slick and powerful package. Definitely look into it.

As an aside, another C++ portable library that i hear is quite tasty is WxWindows.
