yep, and if you read the details most of these cases are you get this speed only if you live in the center of the nation's largest city. and its not available in the entire city either
most of the people complaining in the USA about broadband live out in the exuburbs or rural areas and want the gubment to pay for the infrastructure
The gubetment already paid for the infrastructure. The telcos pocketed the cash for themselves instead.
Coding in Perl with a chronic case of CRS taught me the importance of writing legible code. After rewriting my own code a few times because I couldn't figure out how it worked I found that writing legible code is even more important than writing well documented code. And one you learn to write legible code in Perl (yes, it can be done) you can do it in any language.
As an adult, with children, mortgage, etc, etc ad nauseum to pay, we'll be buying a big fat ZERO of these.
Now, if there were "intelligent light switches (and power outlets)" with built-in powerline network adapters and who's control protocol is openly documented (so that I could write Linux apps), then I'd consider it.
If you are an adult with children, mortgage, etc. how could you have time to write Linux apps?
As an adult with children, mortgage, etc. I barely have time to post to Slashdot.
It's hard to make the right choice when the only options presented to you are the wrong ones. (If you think things would be different under McCain or Romney you are deluding yourself.)
Configure your firewall rules so that access to these systems has to come from the internal network or through a VPN.. Create a VPN account for the vendor but leave it disabled. If there is a legitimate need to access the system they can submit a request through your internal change control process (or have an internal contact submit the request on their behalf) and pending approval the VPN account can be enabled when the work is to begin and disabled again once the work is complete. In fact if you are subject to SOX, HIPPA etc. you are probably required to grant external access this way.
You can probably do the same with firewall rules rather than a VPN but personally I don't like granting external access to internal network resources.
Of all of the Oracle backed applications I am aware of used by all of the companies that I have worked for the number that support Postgres is exactly zero.
(Technically there are some open source web frameworks that support Postgres involved but I would consider that more of infrastructure rather than application space.)
Some of these applications process Millions or even Billions of dollars in transactions. They aren't going to be replaced by an unsupported product that the vendor will point to and say "Posgress is an unsupported database back-end, we can't provide you with support" should there be a problem.
However unlikely it is that Oracle wins this, if this were to pass it would be the end of the software industry as we know it.
I really hope that somehow there is some kind of backlash against Oracle when this ends. Well I can dream at least.
Oracle has practically every corporation in the world by the balls (i.e. all their corporate data is locked up in Oracle databases and business logic in Oracle applications). They could start killing babies and it wouldn't affect their bottom line.
I've worked in IT for over 20 years, inducing several years working for a major financial institution. After all I've seen Microsoft and Apple just don't seem that evil to me anymore.
You prefer that everybody in this industry earns a precarious income and operates dirt-cheap stuff ? No high-end equipment whatsoever ? Yeah, that makes sense if you earn about as much as a McDonalds worker. Unfortunately, I do think your wish will come true.
Regarding IBM mainframes, they are worth their money and if you cannot see the difference to the cheap x86 stuff from Dell, that's your fault. Finally, every skilled factory worker stands in front of 500k Euros/dollars worth of hardware these days. You prefer that 10k$ Dell "server" ??
I never said that the Z series wasn't worth the money, just that that they are expensive.
Don't confuse your liking Gates and liking his money.
His money does great things.
You mean his money escaped from his bank account and started a charitable foundation all in its own? His money must be a lot better than mine. My money frequently escapes never to be seen again.
Also, what happens if the country in question falls apart and someone decides they want to give it back to you later in the form of a dirty bomb?
I don't think there are many vitrification plants in Kreplakistan. It's far more likely the waste would be sent somewhere like France or Canada. Are you really that worried about the Canucks?
They sent us Celiene Dion and Justin Beiber. I think that counts as a hostile country.
And don't get me started on Canadian bacon...

Nothing that a multi-year multi-million dollar project doomed to run obscenely over budget and schedule can't fix.

I've had this for months on my Sprint Android phone.
I have actually received alerts for a couple of severe storms that passed through my area.
Everything else will seem simple after that...
So how many are you going to buy?

I'm going to paint bright orange-red stripes on my phone, to make thieves think it's poisonous.
Better yet out a Windows logo on it.
Don't like Obamacare and 'socialized' medicine? Move to Canada. Oh, wait.

I would rather send Bruce Willis in a titanium hulled space shuttle with a hydrogen bomb.

You forget licensing of bogus parents to Android device manufacturers. ..
Sush. That's the plotline for Star Wars ep. 7. (Solo is suspected of being a clone)

At my last job I would have loved this light of a meeting schedule.
The problem with election reform is the people who have benefited from the current corrupt system are in charge of reforming it.

It's lived a vibrant, fruitful life.
Well now it'll live another one! Like the sporocarp of a fungus growing on a bag of rotting garbage.
Truly, there can be no greater evil than COBOL and enterprise Java in the same bucket, united by an unholy sludge of XML.
If it ties to a cluster of back-end Oracle databases servicing SAP you could be right. Satan himself probably wouldn't touch that much evil.
The damned thing's immortal.
IBM has found the secret to everlasting life!
Surely, there is some money to be made here?
Have you seen how much a maintenance contract on a Z-Series runs?
Perhaps they could search for one on Bing?
