I found your comments interesting, and telling.

I have a couple of nephews 'n nieces who have just finished school, but have no idea what to do with the rest of their lives. This is something I had no problem with myself (stumbled upon an apple IIe in a shopping mall demo in the early eighties as a youngster -- to this day I can remember the intoxicating electronic smell of the humming machine, the somehow magical keyboard and the crude but beautiful chess game it was running).

I'm determined that my children (3y/o and 6m/o) will be exposed to as much experiences as possible so they will decide on a path early, perhaps even a lifelong passion...

Somehow I don't think life is worth living if you don't have a consuming passion to drive you.

Sorry, in my experience, on the desktop, you're wrong. I'm typing this on an old P4 (with nVidia) 3GHz machine running Ubuntu. It's slow. This same machine used to have WinXP on it and it was fucking snappy.

I don't know when/what has gone wrong, but Linux on the desktop is slower than what it used to be.

I've also been using Linux since 0.9x. Linux on the desktop is buggy, slow and the UI has more problems than windows (eg, copy/paste/tabbing/default buttons/etc - ie, real basic shit). Blind fanb0ism doesn't change that.

Don't get me wrong, windows has it's problems, but for the typical end-user out there, windows is superior.

There are earlier version which don't have vsplit. Depends what your definition of "modern" is. Remember there are many server installations which are difficult to upgrade for many reasons.

Besides all that, how exactly is splitting the screen vertically going to help with lines which are so long they're either truncated or wrapped? Vertical splitting is for editing two files in parallel - as with horizontal split. I don't follow how splitting is relevant here.
