I have a couple of nephews 'n nieces who have just finished school, but have no idea what to do with the rest of their lives. This is something I had no problem with myself (stumbled upon an apple IIe in a shopping mall demo in the early eighties as a youngster -- to this day I can remember the intoxicating electronic smell of the humming machine, the somehow magical keyboard and the crude but beautiful chess game it was running).
I'm determined that my children (3y/o and 6m/o) will be exposed to as much experiences as possible so they will decide on a path early, perhaps even a lifelong passion...
Somehow I don't think life is worth living if you don't have a consuming passion to drive you.
Sorry, in my experience, on the desktop, you're wrong. I'm typing this on an old P4 (with nVidia) 3GHz machine running Ubuntu. It's slow. This same machine used to have WinXP on it and it was fucking snappy.
I don't know when/what has gone wrong, but Linux on the desktop is slower than what it used to be.
I've also been using Linux since 0.9x. Linux on the desktop is buggy, slow and the UI has more problems than windows (eg, copy/paste/tabbing/default buttons/etc - ie, real basic shit). Blind fanb0ism doesn't change that.
Don't get me wrong, windows has it's problems, but for the typical end-user out there, windows is superior.
Weird. For a few takes there, I kept reading IE8 lie group, which just didn't make sense coupled with which shows up in string theory and supergravity.
...and since your "project" website (iboard.uberm00.net/) is offline with "Couldn't connect to MySQL server.", I'm now convinced you're an 18 y/o living with his mommy.
I'm afraid he lives in the real world where corporate lawyers lurk. Just as you cannot expect any real privacy on the net, so too can you not expect anything you post to not be used against you.
Yes, academia and government are really known for attracting the best talent. Commercially driven progress will always be more rapid (goodly or badly).
Between my sputtering and aching belly, I almost feel sorry for the yanks with their patent mess. Then I remember what life would be like without this comedy going on across the pond...
Just ignore them, use whatever tool you think is best and get the job done. I'm sure Python/ruby/* are fantastic tools, but Perl works for me on so many levels.
With comments like...but it takes too many time to compile everything., I can see they're letting it slip that, secretly, the kernel has actually been developed in China all along. Linus is just a male stripper they hired to pose for pictures (with beer in hand).
It's like this "ICT" crap. IT wasn't hip enough anymore, so some (marketing, probably) dummy somewhere decided to splice in Communication. It's like they feel the need to give existing technology a fresh coat of paint every few years.
There are earlier version which don't have vsplit. Depends what your definition of "modern" is. Remember there are many server installations which are difficult to upgrade for many reasons.
Besides all that, how exactly is splitting the screen vertically going to help with lines which are so long they're either truncated or wrapped? Vertical splitting is for editing two files in parallel - as with horizontal split. I don't follow how splitting is relevant here.
For vim, yes. However, vsplit is not available for some versions (ie, whatever comes with your distro)....and no, installing the latest from src is not an option.
I found your comments interesting, and telling.

I would be temped to get a job with the TSA just to get a chance to hack these things.
Now you've gone and done it, you've just been red-flagged in an anti-terrorism data-mining system somewhere...

Well, before launching personal attacks, you should really pull your head out of your crusty anus.
I was simply offering a different perspective. Since you're so upset about some silly online games going offline, I take it you're, what, an 18 y/o?

Which is why Ubuntu has a long way to go before making any kind of serious inroads into production/server type environments.
/ takes off hacker hat, and puts on Managing Director hat
Makes good business sense.

Sounds like you have a something else growing in your speech centre.
I don't understand why you couldn't have found this all by yourself
That's what you get when engaging with a Brand X Fanb0!y.
Naiveté and complacency seem to be the norm nowadays, no offence.
This political nonsense makes the Jacob Zuma/Malema crowd in South Africa look like amateurs.
Thank God SA's not the only country with idiots in power...
:)))))

quantum bits — or qubits — encoded in magnetically coupled superconducting loops
You just can't make this stuff up.

I'm probably the only one, being married and denied sex, but Bangalore reminds me of Humpalot, Ivana Humpalot.
Is it only me, or does anyone else also read David Miscarriage whenever they see this guy's name?
Doesn't matter. Inevitably it will provide more work for professionals to fix the abominations.
OK, I made the wrong assumption. Does that make you feel better? ;)
I edit various files in parallel all the time. However, I prefer using multiple screens each with multiple xterms - much more productive.
