    Was bin Laden supposed to join the Democratic Party of Saudi Arabia? Should he have sent Al Qaeda Team Six in a stealth helicopter to shoot Bush in his bed? Terrorists deploy what resources they have, while the US's ordinance is too good to waste on civilians.

    Hardly a contradiction, since he could have learned of the drug connection from the cops or have been threatened by the criminals once the investigation started. And "never talk to police" is a good rule of thumb anyway even they are accusing you of criminal activity on another planet 200 years ago.

    Now I doubt the guy was really ignorant, but legal actions can't reasonably be magically transformed into criminal ones by the word "facilitating". A dealer or crooked border agent are directly committing crimes.

    True, assuming such equipment is practical, but you still don't want to give the message that's it's OK to fire these lasers at people. Small aircraft might still be unprotected, and when the idiot gets bored of planes he might shine this thing at cars or in his neighbors' windows.

    Clearly we should set up prisons for birds that damage airplanes instead of hardening the aircraft structure... I'll agree with your point that the guy is old enough to know better (though "attempted murder" is a little extreme when the probability of taking down an airliner with a laser appears to be 0), but airlines also have a responsibility to their crews and passengers to take defensive safety precautions.

    All those countries with VAT suffering massive unemployment and on the verge of total collapse is of course just a coincidence. Correlation is not causation after all. Clearly what China, Mexico, and Europe need is an even higher VAT. Turn it up to 110%!

    Does impose a sort of compliance tax on Amazon. Does Amazon have to submit to auditing by every state's tax authorities too? Does Fry's submit scans of all customers' driver's licenses to every state?

    Why don't states just send bills for the privilege of residing in them? Yeah, few would pay unless the government could justify its expenditures, which everyone knows are unjustifiable.

    You're paying the price, but that's not the return you are getting. Like the PATRIOT Act it's not really going to be used against terrorists, even if there were any. Probably will be used mostly by the DEA for asset forfeiture. Best case scenario, you're losing privacy so government bureaucrats can live large ripping off drug retailers. Or possibly the IRS could hassle you over that extra $1000 in your account from selling something on ebay, or your ex could squeeze you a little harder during the divorce. Worst case: dystopia.

    Most people are idiots with weak characters, so it's no surprise that they would want to limit free speech. Most would support torture and mutilation of people who are arrested too.

    Indecent proposal to 6-year-old? An offer of candy is more sinister.
    Someone threatening me with death? Just another day on the internet: a serious killer doesn't warn his victim
    Slandering? A law that can only be selectively enforced is no law
    Threats against the President? Last I checked he wasn't a King with more Dignity than a citizen

    Yes, free speech is always threatened by the evil of human nature, including in the USA, and in every case it's been shameful and disgusting.

    I think most countries with Islamic law allow women in ads, though they have to cover their hair and wear modest clothing. In both cases you have women being told what to wear for the good of society and the dignity of women.

    Stalking is a pretty questionable offense, since it can apply to almost any behavior that the "victim" objects to. And according to you if the victim doesn't realize they are being stalked the stalking is worse! Of course companies and the government are experts in overt and covert tracking, but it's somehow criminal when impotent individuals do it?

    We also thought that guns, which unlike porn are explicitly mentioned in Constitution, couldn't be banned... And just like the gun bans in Europe, their porn ban will held up as something that any "civilized" country does. The USA already has some of the strictest laws criminalizing prostitution, so a little "War on Women" rhetoric, a couple more lesbians appointed to the Supreme Court, and a porn ban is done.
