I doubt it's as dramatic as that, the reason I wanted to post in the first place is the complete lack of information about the specific protein other than apparently it is the protein whose job it is to make sure the pig can get a virus.

If people want to go around slaughtering pigs then I don't really care if they get sick, I'm more worried about the pig living a quality life. The potential mining aspect doesn't make much sense. Why would you go to great expense to try and mine bitcoins if you already have over a million of them?
If this is true, I doubt he's mining much of anything. The Wired article contains a video which appears to be from a Bitcoin conference in October of this year where Wright appeared via Skype. He mentions that he currently has a computer in Iceland that is the 15th most powerful supercomputer in the world. He's not using that to mine bitcoins, he's using it to model the scalability of bitcoin. So, he's not going through the great expense to try and mine bitcoins, he's going through the great expense to model the system and see what's ahead. Maybe that is a direct result of the recent debate over the size of blocks. The additional power coming to his home could also be used for modeling, or it could be used for additional research or work unrelated to bitcoin. If this is a man with the kind of resources to set up a major supercomputer in Iceland to take advantage of the cheap electricity, I don't see any reason for him to run additional power to his house in Sydney for the purpose of mining bitcoins. That doesn't make sense. If mining was his goal then he would do it in Iceland, not metro Sydney.

I doubt it's as dramatic as that, the reason I wanted to post in the first place is the complete lack of information about the specific protein other than apparently it is the protein whose job it is to make sure the pig can get a virus.
In other words, screw the people, I'm more worried about the pigs. If people want to go around slaughtering pigs then I don't really care if they get sick, I'm more worried about the pig living a quality life. Obviously the majority of pigs that are raised for food don't have a great life to begin with, and I wouldn't like to see that quality continue to decrease. Even a pig raised for food deserves a happy life up to the point when we kill it.

But what's the purpose of that protein in the animal? Surely the only purpose of that protein is not to allow the virus to spread, or else you think that would have a habit of being selected out of the lineage. Surely it has some beneficial purpose that has ensured it stays part of the animal. It seems a little too easy to remove disease by just deleting the part of the animal that the disease uses.
How about human slavery? That was not caused by legislation, it was caused by people, and it was (legally) abolished by legislation. If you want to talk about "inalienable rights", tell that to the people who kept slaves thousands (or hundreds) of years ago. "Rights" are only "inalienable" if people actually respect them. You can scream to someone about your "inalienable" right to live but that's not going to stop a bullet that someone fired at you, just like it's not going to stop a slaveowner who decided that you belong to him. In fact, even while the Declaration Of Independence was talking about the inalienable rights of people here in the US, it was still allowing slavery. It talked about the right to life, liberty, and happiness for all people while not considering some humans people. Those inalienable rights apparently were fairly alienable until further legislation did something about it.
I think there really is reason to have the ability, with a court order, to be able to get into that.
I don't understand how she thinks the decryption algorithm is supposed to know whether or not there is a court order for that communication. But, I'll admit, if she can devise an algorithm that will only decrypt a communication either in the presence of a valid decryption key, or the presence of a valid lawfully-obtained court order, then I'm willing to consider the proposal. If she's counting on people trusting the government to not abuse a backdoor, or counting on that backdoor staying hidden, then that ship (with Captain Snowden at the helm) sailed a long time ago, with all of the trust in the government not to abuse its power held securely in the cargo hold.

If this is true, I doubt he's mining much of anything. The Wired article contains a video which appears to be from a Bitcoin conference in October of this year where Wright appeared via Skype. He mentions that he currently has a computer in Iceland that is the 15th most powerful supercomputer in the world. He's not using that to mine bitcoins, he's using it to model the scalability of bitcoin. So, he's not going through the great expense to try and mine bitcoins, he's going through the great expense to model the system and see what's ahead. Maybe that is a direct result of the recent debate over the size of blocks. The additional power coming to his home could also be used for modeling, or it could be used for additional research or work unrelated to bitcoin. If this is a man with the kind of resources to set up a major supercomputer in Iceland to take advantage of the cheap electricity, I don't see any reason for him to run additional power to his house in Sydney for the purpose of mining bitcoins. That doesn't make sense. If mining was his goal then he would do it in Iceland, not metro Sydney.
