  1. since he is a megalomaniac... on 'Sith' Already Found Online · · Score: 1

Since George Lucas is a megalomaniac who likes to rewrite his movies years after release, I won't be seeing it in theatres. Seattle has one of the best theatres in the country where people dressed up for Star Wars (and lots of other movies, including LotR), but that still didn't convince me to go. If I do end up watching it, I'll wait until my family gets the DVD and then go watch it in a quiet, high-quality home theatre. I do miss the atmosphere of the Cinerama (no other theatres compare, which is why I don't go to other theatres anymore), but since this is a George Lucas bastardization, I can't pull myself to go.

Tilde. If you use [~] in your search query, it will always redirect you, I believe. The ~ is actually a really cool feature. If you search for [~vehicle], it returns Car Talk as one of the top results, with Car highlighted (meaning that was a search term). It is almost a fuzzy search. They do this automatically with some queries. If you search for [lotr], you get direct links to Lord of the Rings (with that highlighted, meaning it searched it for you). This is one of the big things they are researching, I believe, using synonyms in search queries. One example that is given in Google presentation is [bay area cooking class]. If the query was taken directly, you would get limited results. However, if they also searched synonyms, they would find more potential results. Bay Area could mean San Francisco or Oakland, cooking could also be culinary, and class could also be course. They are trying to bring fuzzy searches to users, without user interaction. I'm sure this search history feature will help in that quest. There might be more than one Bay Area, but if you are constantly searching for San Francisco or zip codes in that area, they can know which Bay Area you are talking about. I imagine search history might lead to more personal search results.

Also, if you are logged in to search history, every link has the redirector. They have to know what links you click on to give you your history, so they include the redirect. If you haven't tried the search history thing yet, I'd recommend it. I have over 700 searches for far in the history and it is becoming quite interesting. I'd love for them to provide a personal zeitgeist. It still has some bugs, and can be slow occasionally, but it has lots of potential, and is better than Yahoo's or A9's search history (both of which I have used occasionally).

It isn't as fast as in the Keynote, but it'll still search through all the metadata of my filled hard drive in less than five seconds (usually quicker). This upgrade was great. Panther brought Expose and other stuff, but this one feels like a more polished upgrade. The speed improvements are very welcome.

I was uncomfortable last season when Jack kept violating the civil rights of the 'bad guys' and the TV show glamorized it. My mom and brother were talking about even more civil rights violations this season, so that was it for me. That is just what this country - with its many apathetic citizens and an embarrassing military track record recently (Abu Ghraib) - needs, a TV show glamorizing torture and civil rights violations. No thanks Fox.

They were a perfectly valid website and had lots of visitors, but hidden on the front page were a bunch of links to the spams. Google would hit these links, but almost no actual humans would. That is sort of along the lines of what you said, but it would allow them to be even more fine grained (find the links that users are likely to hit). Hmm, hopefully that makes sense, it did in my brain.

Imagine a user with this browsing an online chemistry database where the only way to find info is by filling out some text fields on a website. Now Google will be able to find this deep websites by having users due all the grunt work.

Also, they might use info about popular pages and browsing habits to improve search results (like I'm sure they are doing now with the Search History feature).

People need to realize that you shouldn't blacklist large swaths of the internet in order to fight spam. Filter, don't blacklist! Just because there are two sides to the story doesn't mean they both have to be represented. This is a step backwards. The KKK can march all they want, they have that freedom, but why should the news shows put them on the air? The answer: they shouldn't. Excellent post. What most opponents of this bill argue is that it gives gays special rights. This is patently wrong, the bill guarantees the rights of all workers, no matter their sexuality. While it it does protect straight people, it is more intended to prevent gays from being discriminated against. Since gays were way more likely to be discriminated against, this gives them an equal footing. What is wrong with preventing discrimination? It won't hurt any straight people at all.

Also, people are arguing that Microsoft shouldn't alienate their Evangelical employees. They have been supporting this bill for years in different incarnations and there didn't seem to be any problem in the past. Why would this change now? The god damn religious right thinks they were empowered by the recent election, and now they are trying to take out good legislation because of their animosity toward gays. This makes me sick.

After withdrawing their support, I lost the last little bit of respect I had for Microsoft. Grow a fucking spine and stand up for what is right.

The talk was about 'delivering experiences'. As much as I'm sure he hated it, he did use the iPod as an example of an experience (including the whole vertical market with iTunes and iTMS). On one slide of the presentation, he had a bunch of 'experiences' listed around the screen in sort of a circle, with a bunch of little thumbnails next to them. The thumbnails were sort of a representation of that experience. One of the experiences was operations (server side stuff). One of the pictures next to that was a small thumbnail of Apple's Xserve. I couldn't believe it! I pulled up Apple's website and showed my friend right then and there how they had Apple's pictures in their slideshow. Microsoft can't even use pictures of their own products, sheesh.

If you watch a few more weekly shows, then this would quickly add up. People can't be expected to pay too much for each show, or else they wouldn't be able to afford more than one show. I would happily pay a quarter to download a high quality episode of The Daily Show with BitTorrent. They could also sell it on Google Video when that matures, but I'm not sure if you will be able to save videos from there or if that would be cost effective (BT would be cheaper than having everyone download it directly).

I expect it will be at or above $50 within the next year (which seems to be the analyst predictions now). It had a lot of forward momentum this year, and it had lots of expectations riding on it, so investors are maybe cashing out because they think the stock has had its run. It may have been overvalued at $45, but I think it is just slightly undervalued now (well, at least when I look towards Apple's future). I think Apple has at least a few bright years ahead (and hopefully more), so I expect the stock will do well for the next few years. It won't be the crazy growth that was found during the last 18 months, but it will still be very respectable. And who knows, maybe the Halo factor will kick in big time and pump the stock price up. I still think it will outperform the rest of the market. The biggest fear I have right now is the economy slowing down due to energy prices (although, it'd be nice to get us Americans weaned off oil). iPods and computers, especially Apple computers, are luxury items, so they would likely be hit hard by any energy-related recession.
