I'm not an astronomer (IANAA), but doesn't the fact that a telescope is earth-based limit its field of view to (basically) a plane determined by the perpendicular from that point on the surface?
A space-based telescope (like the Hubble) can be rotated and aimed at almost any object out there. In that sense, a Hubble is still superior in some aspects.
On the other hand, just the fact that adaptive optics and interferometry can clean up the images so spectacularly is simply amazing!
I wonder how long before I can get a consumer-grade version, to take pictures of the coeds^H^H^H^H <ahem> natural "scenery"...;-)
OK, I take the "Jeesus, you're a moron" part back.
I should have said, "Jeesus, you're a fuckin' moron".
Wheew... 9/10 on the flame scale.
Post stupid stuff, get flamed to a crisp. Lather. Rinse. Repeat.
OK, coming to the gem you just coughed up.
What does grepping Stewart's remarks have to do with anything? Are you trying to impress us with your "l33t g43pp1ng skillz" ?? Instead of wasting everyone's bandwidth, why not just post what your point is?
The answer: you have no point. You just read about these magical words "dialectism" and "dualism" somewhere, and you want to run around using them, like a 2-year old who just learnt a new word. Jeez man, grow up!
And I'll humor you some by actually pretending you had a point with this 'search for "true" POV' bullshit. The answer: read the transcript again, and try to friggin' understand what he's trying to say. Just like you didn't understand "dialectism" and "dualism", you are not understanding what Stewart is saying.
Here, I'll spell it out for ya in simple terms. Stewart isn't looking for a "truth"; he was telling Begala and Carlson that they, the so-called "debate" show on the Cable NEWS Network, should be doing a better job of asking questions and should be listening to what the other side has to say. They should be listening, so that they can then ask further, probing questions. And also concede the other side's points when they should be.
He is asking for a civilized debate-based show, instead of the pro-wrestling format "theater" they have going on there.
And he's asking that, because Crossfire claims to be a debate-type show. It is not at all, and just consists of lefties and righties spouting off their party lines, not listening to the other side.
he could have asked Kerry these things he so desperately wants Crossfire (and other shows like it), of all things, to ask. But he didn't.
So the next time a (concerned) waiter walks up to Kerry's table in a restaurant, he should say, "Senator! I am supposed to take your order, but won't. Instead, I will ask you these questions that have been bothering me: x, y, z..." ??
Were you dropped as a child? Repeatedly?? Because your failure to understand something so basic as "the job" has me quite confounded. Maybe it is because you're at a University and the critical-thinking neurons haven't germinated yet (or have been killed by the copious quantities of PBRs being quaffed). In any case, as someone once said, dude, if you have to ask, you'll never know.
But Stewart's not helping. And don't sit here and say "it's not his job to help". Obviously, he made it clear that it is, if he really cares that much about it.
You, sir, are a class-A moron.
The reason so many people are cheering Jon Stuart is because he voiced what they've been trying to say for a long time. The average Joe (or Jane) stands a higher chance of climbing Mt. Everest than being invited on Crossfire.
JS got invited (partly because of his book, and partly because he has often criticized Crossfire as sympotmatic of the media corruption), and he took the opportunity to make a sincere plea for change. This was about all he could do. And he did a mighty fine job shooting down those two monkeys.
Anybody else would have been the goody-2-shoes and just bent over for the anal exam. JS took a stand for what he believes is in the best interest of the country, which is honest, open, informative political discourse. He should be applauded, and I do applaud him.
Is he perfect? No. Is he God?? No! But he did a pretty good job of voicing the peoples' concerns on this topic. Just see the amount of applause he got (and I'm sure it wasn't the "APPLAUSE" sign going off, because it was CNN's show, not his).
Jeesus are you a moron. Do you really think throwing words like "Dialectism" and "Dualism" is going to impress anybody? Just because you can quote something from a PolSci book (or wherever), it doesn't mean you are talking sense.
First step, for you: think for yourself instead of whipping out terms out of your (or, as in this case, somebody else's) ass.
If you didn't hear what Jon Stuart was saying, then you need to pick up the book on Listening 101.
He was on the show to tell both sides to calm down the rhetoric and talk issues. Clearly you didn't read the transcript or watch the clip; please do so before you spout off again.
He clearly says, "You guys (left and right) should be debating", and not indulging in staged theater (a-la pro wrestling). He is begging them to take the "N" in CNN (which stands for NEWS) seriously and try to inform the people, instead of just spouting their party lines back and forth.
Read the transcript. And when done reading it, READ IT AGAIN. And put down that other crap you've been reading.
And finally: get out of your mom's basement. There is a whole world out there, you know.
To those of you who say "public funds were being misused because SETI@Home uses electricity": should we start firing those who leave lights on at night? What about those who don't turn off their monitors? How about those who have their own coffeemakers/(insert appliance here) ? How about those who open their office windows in the dead of winter because their office is too hot (instead of calling the HVAC people to fix it)? How about those who turn up the thermostat in winter above the regulated 68F? Or turn it below 72F in summer?
Firing this guy is severe and unwarranted. A simple warning should have been enough.
Since he's a state employee, I hope his union takes up the case and files a grievance.
I think it's about time some foundation (i.e. someone other than unemployed old me) came up with an "X Prize" for these sorts of endeavors. For example:
- the first gasoline engine to give 100mpg (sustained) in normal driving conditions (heck, even a highway) for a medium-sized sedan.
- First electric car that can take 4 adults 300miles on 4 hours of charge
etc.
Some good-old competition combined with good-old American ingenuity should do wonders for these projects.
Not to belabor the point, but when Amazon was just a gleam in Bezos's eye, he hired some Walmart execs with massive options packages. They brought over some of the tricks with them, and it enable Amazon to get off the ground. Later, Walmart sued Amazon claiming loss of trade secrets.
This is why they don't outsource. Their use of IT in this sector is amazing. Of course, their (giving low salaries to employees | forcing companies to setup shop in China) is amazing too.
Walmart isn't being altruistic by not outsourcing; in fact, if they knew they could make money in the long run by outsourcing, they would have done so a long time ago.
The fact is, their main edge over their competitors is their inventory management system (just-in-time, etc.). If they outsourced this, what is to stop their outsourcee to take the knowledge and then shop it around to Target, KMart, Sears, etc.? Such valuable knowledge must be kept in-house if you want to maintain the edge.
On the other hand, if it plain labor, then Walmart _encourages_ their suppliers to outsource. They keep asking for price cuts till the supplier has no choice. Read for yourself.
They need to consider naming things that people can:
A) pronounce
Well, Google has got everyone beat in this regard. "Google" is probably the first thing a baby says (and hence I'm sure it is hardwired into our brains). The only thing that could beat "Google" would be "dada" or "burp". Any takers?
In the words of Tip O'Neill, "All politics is local".
What is this desire to aim directly for the Whitehouse? Why not pool resources and fight the local battles? By aiming for the presidency (and ignoring the local politics), you are setting yourselves up for a fall. We all know that in a 2-party system, rigged the way it is, your chances of winning the Whitehouse are somewhere between 0.00 and 0.000. Then why waste the resources on this race?
How many members of Congress do you have? How many locally elected officials does the Green Party have? How many judicial appointees do you have? See the pattern here?
Maybe this isn't a question as much as a rant, but if you feel like, please answer why you are wasting the time and effort on a run for the Whitehouse, when the same resources, applied at local levels, would yield immensely more benefit.
Your ethics and the ethics of the Chinese are not the same.
The question here is not of inappropriate content for the Chinese, but of content deemed inappropriate by the Chinese Government. There is a big difference between the Government and the people.
It is precisely this sort of "we know best for everyone" thinking that starts wars.
Are you employed by Google by any chance?
Please RTFA, and then think about it. The sites that Google is blocking are NEWS sites, and not child porn! Google is being an active collaborator in the continuing oppression of the Chinese people (and not to mention the Tibetans, who are getting royally screwed) by whitewashing the news.
ptorrone writes.... this how-to from Engadget shows how they did it along with some other projects with the modded camera.
You know, I hate to be the "astroturfing nazi" of/., but seeing that the article is written by Phillip Torrone, shouldn't the submitter (Phillip Torrone, it appears) say "... how we did it" ?
I don't like it when I see people submit stories as if they are a third party and just "happened" to come across an article, which they themselves have written.
If you wrote something and find it worthy of the/. crowd, then step forward and claim ownership, dammit! We won't hold it against ya.
It's interesting to find out that Microsoft thinks and predicts Novell (SuSE) will be the dominant Linux distribution they'll have to compete against.
That's because Novell has withstood the onslaught from Microsoft and still managed to eke out a survival. The folks at Novell know how to fight back against Microsoft.
It would be useful if someone could post the sourcecode snippets, and show exactly how these vulnerabilities was caused. This is the advantage of OSS: you can dig into the sources and analyze them completely.
Better idea: get a stoned chick to ask people to "switch"... that'll appeal to more people ;-)
Catch is, IE did not crash; the machine crashed. So, technically, it's not an IE crash... ;-)

Running 2.8GHz overclocked (aircooled) to 3.4GHz here...
modified and Italian Electic car
What was I thinking? This is slashdot!
2. More pictures of the electric car w/ antenna.
3. They mention a 1-watt power WiFi box. Is that legal? I thought the power of these devices was limited to 100mW..
iPod killer, meet the website killer.

MOD PARENT UP, MODS!!
Look up Steve Jackson games.

Under the heading "House" are the news items:
And under the heading "Record", are listed:
- As Reservoirs Recede, Fears of a Water Shortage Rise (Los Angeles Times)
- NASA Delays Plans to Fly Shuttle Soon (NY Times)
- San Jose State, Rice Set Scoring Record (AP)
This shows that just a clustering technique isn't enough; you need more context. Google (IMHO) does a better job of clustering their news results.Having said this, I wish Vivisimo all the luck. Google needs more competition; it is what will give us the Next Great Search Engine(tm).
Ob: I, for one, would like to welcome our new clustering overlords.. ;-)
