OpenGL is a completely open system for graphical rendering that is a much better supported (both morally and via standards) for Linux than any propriatory system would be. Most games created now that have 3D aspects in Windows are built to run on either DirectX or OpenGL, which means if the OpenGL side was ported, it wouldn't be too difficult to run. Why make a new standard like a DirectX clone on Linux when a perfectally good ones already exsists? (aka OpenGL).
As for audio, I've noted on more recent distributions that support for audio has greatly improved. Several applications support several different options for recieving audio depending on what system you use, but it seems to becoming standardized fairly quickly. (I'd post links but I'm typing this telneted into a Linux box and using links..)
The problem I believe they were referring to with not having the right ratio of gamers prolly has something to do with Linux being more accepted in the Server market than the desktop market. I'm guessing a lot of companies that use Linux as a server probably don't also play games on them, as they are used in daily production and have more "important" tasks to do. And since the Linux desktop market is still relatively small, the market for games is going to be small. Also, a lot of linux users balk at buying software of any type for their box because of the attitude that software should be free(as in beer). Not saying that the attitude is good or bad, just that it makes selling games more difficult and the urge to port them less.
Saying that I've bought several games from Loki that have run fine on my Linux box. Nothing like going to a lan party with a bunch of Windows people and playing some games, with people wondering what kind of system I'm running:).
You know I thought the same thing, so last year I bought my gf at the time 64MB of RAM for her laptop on valentines day. She seemed to like it... after about two weeks of being really confused.
Girls just seem to want me for my technology anyway.. I have lots of neat toys (is what you get when you put what could be beer money to gadgets)
Which would be fine, if the iMac could be upgraded. What if I want a new bigger display and want to get rid of the one attached to it perminatly? How about if I want to get a new Graphics card.. where's the AGP slot? There's no slots for things, and that makes me feel confined.
Granted I could just get a straight up G4, but those are very expensive in compairison. And the fact that your only display option is an LCD that will cost at least $500 when perhaps a $100 17" CRT would do for you is stressful on the wallet.
Also a well integrated and tested system is great, and the problems you won't run into in compairison to a home-made one would prolly help out on the stress factor. But what if I want to make my own Mac? Where can I buy a G4, motherboard, and all the parts to put together a nice Mac system that will run OS X? If only Apple made the hardware aspect of their system a bit more free(not beer), then it would be more worthwhile. They had a good start on their software by using a BSD core, now if they'd just lighten up on their hardware a bit I might give them a shot.
Something feels wrong when I'm seeing posts on/. trying to stop kids from playing video games and encouraging them to go out drinking.
Ok, so let me get this straight. Instead of building up important hand-eye coordination, reaction time, and problem-solving skills, he should instead kill off as many brain cells as possible in order to be socially acceptable to jock-like peers. Well we all know how being socially accepted and having everyone like you while you puke in the back of a VW is important, so I guess you're sorta right...
GAME ON!
BTW, if you're trying to carry a flat screen LCD for use with a computer during a weekend event, essentially any plain ol' brown box will work as long as you don't step on and/or puncture it. (previous experience). Also you should check out that neat mini-pc that's the size of a cdrom drive at think geek
Actually, I've played a MUD for a very long time called Dragonrealms, where my main character was of the empath class.
Empath's couldn't kill anything or they would suffer shock and get stunned for like 5 min and be unable to heal for a while. That's if they even tried to harm anything. Yet it was the most rewarding roleplaying experience I've ever had, and lots of people still like to play as the healer.
It's usually a lot more fun to interact with the people around you, and interesting when you're forced to in order to gain levels, rather than the preset and obviously predictable creatures in the area.
If you want to just sit in front of your computer and hack things for hours to gain levels, then heck, you can do that in a single player RPG. Go play Final Fantasy, random encounters that force you to fight and gain levels are full of mindless fun;P
The real reason? X-Box is more expensive and has less good games! Appart from the hardcore gaming fans (who already bought theirs) who is going to buy an X-Box right now?
Price of a PS2: $300
Price of an Xbox: $300
Price of an Xbox plus needed extras to do the things the PS2 can do (such as dvd playback): $330
Price of a PS2 plus needed extras to do the things the Xbox can do (such as save a game, go online.. etc): $420
Ok, so I fail to see why the xbox is more expensive. I know that to quite a few Xbox fans, Halo beats out GTA 3, and PS2 fans swear by GTA and the FF series. Marrowind is comming out this month for the xbox, and it looks to be a more in depth roleplaying game than any FF I've seen. Games are comming out for both platforms as they try to outdo each other, which is good for all of us.
For a company that has never entered the console market before, their flagship product is doing significantly better than other companies who have tried to achive the same (take a look at the NeoGeo for example.. or the flop that sega kept having).
I choose the xbox because I wanted to get out of the random encounter, level up your character and gain more power slump of the FF games. So far I haven't been dissapointed, but each person will have different views based on what games they perfer.
Has anyone noticed that gamecube seems to be out of this war? Been a while since I've seen the fans of that system say much on the matter.
so what you're saying is that a console that has been out for over a year and a half has sold more units than the xbox has in a month since its release? Wow, gee, I wonder why?
Oh, and Sony is making $120 per console profit alone while MS is losing money.. Hmm, doesn't that mean that Sony is overcharging in comparison to MS? I mean, if it costs MS more to make the unit than to sell it and Sony charges more than it costs to make it, isn't MS giving a better deal? Heck, you get more hardware than your dollar is worth.
Realistically, I doubt the xbox will go away any time soon, based on the fact that MS has so much money it can just throw at the project until it works. They'll probably do the same with xbox, so it will probably be around for a while.
I'm not against the PS2, or any game system for that matter. Actually, any aditions the game market only increases competition which in the end is always better for the consumer as companies develope better systems for cheaper with higher quality games to attract the consumer dollar. GC, PS2, and XBOX are actually all good for each other because it will move the market along quite well.
I fail to see why people feel the need to make silly, unbased attacks on the xbox just because it was created by MS. I take all my software and hardware by MS and ANY other company with a grain of salt and on a case by case basis. MS sucks in OS's, and their software needs some opening up I think, but their hardware is generally good quality. The Xbox is a fast, stable system that stays true to the console genre and it's quite sad that I find most/. users aren't more open-minded.
Well, feel free to flame me, but I felt someone should say something to this regard.
The mindless sheep who helped put him in office did so out of the un-Christian desire to force their concepts of morality down everbody's throat
Personally I didn't vote for Bush, but I'm now failing to see how the desire to force their concepts of morality down everybody's throat is "un-Christian". If I remember correctly, Christians are the largest group of people to shove their morality down people's throats. (thinking of all the conversions and persecutions through the ages).
Anyway, I still will say I disagree with Microsoft's Practices, but then again, what they've done is why they're in this mess right now. For those of you who say the system doesn't work just think what it would be like if none of this was going on with M$, we'd be stuck in the same rut without a voice.
