The NYT mentioned that one of the reasons the executives were stepping down is that they wanted to make sure that there was enough money in the pot so that the employees could get paid. If this is for real that's great. It's nice to see the executive of a company acting in a responsible fashion.
Having said that, this also makes me kinda optomistic for the future. The future where all the old dinosaurs that are running the world now finally retire, and get replaced with people that have a clue.
I think you may be right. We've already started looking at buying IBM for the server. Up until quite recently we were an all Compaq shop. Then we bought a Dell, Never Again!! There is a reason why thier stuff is so cheap.
Anyway we'll be watching what happens to the Proliant line and begin evaluating the IBM offerings.
He wants to be able to force every user to buy the software:
Well, that's not really a big deal now is it. If you don't want to pay for the software, don't buy it. He's not really forcing you to do anything. There's no spooky mind control going on.
My wife bought me a PS2 for my birthday just to get me out of the back room where the PC is. Now we spend quality time together in the living room. Me playing FFX and her reading the guide book, identifying fiends and giving me tips.
Add to that hardware. I bought a PS2 just for FFX, that and I needed a new DVD player. Which creates an interesting question. Are PS2's and XBoxen driving DVD sales?
This remindes me of a Dilbert Cartoon where the PHB is noting that games sales are down. his proposed solution is that the company creates more pollution thus keeping kids indoors.
Not necessarily, since WW1 or possibly the Boer or Crimean wars, depending on who you listen to; 'modern' warfare is based on the ability to destroy the opponent's ability to make war. That covers a lot of ground, and may not even strictly speaking involve combat. Think 'Cold War', economic embargo, boycotts, WTO, etc.
...not to meet on the battlefield and fight.
Pretty much right, but depend on what you consider the battlefield.
Having said that, Katz is as usual way off enjoying the effects of whatever recreational pharmaceutical he enjoys most. Drone (Clone?) wars assume that both sides of the conflict have the ability to:
invent such devices
build them in quantity
service then during thier life
transport them around
know how and when to use them
That's a whole lot of assumptions. If you thought about it you could probably count on one hand the nations that would be able to do this, and it would be unlikely, but not impossible, that they'd enter into such a battle.
That of course leaves nation states, and I use the term loosly, that don't have access to this technology.
I really don't think were gonna seen drones fighting one another. We are going to see a lot of drones wandering around the globe attacking people with 'conventional' weapons. Think 'RoboCop' UN Peacekeepers.
Contries that have access to the technology and money to do this sort of thing are more likely to license the technology, and sell support contracts to each other and declare victory on both sides.
I live in Merrrickville (near the above guy), it is a village of about 2000 people in the middle of nowhere. In about 3 or 4 months I'll be able to pick between Wireless, Cable, or DSL. And the DSL will be available through at lease 3 different providers.
I have a couple of client's that will buy nothing by IBM. Now granted they are a minority, and I rarely have cause to visit them, since nothing ever breaks. IBM hardware is some of the best out there unfortunately it does come at a premium price.
I know several people that cannnot justify paying more that $1500CDN on a machine when they know that can replace in 12 months for $600CDN. The though here is why pay for a warranty/support that you're probably not going to use.
I can tell you that a big buyer is the Government, but that's hardly surprising. Dell is making inroads with the government, but after 2 or 3 support calls the big depts go back to IBM or HP.
I miss it. I had dual 466's @ 550. Then I fried the board and got a PIII 600. Some things were faster but it wasn't as "thick". That's the work I used to describe it.
You could just keep opening stuff and it sat there and took it.
I'm thinking I gonna go for the dual Athlon's soon. Basically as soon as I'm out of the X-Mas debt.
Get one ofthe new MAC servers with unlimited clinet connects. Install Start Office and leave the desktop OS's alone.

This could actually work as there is very little product over lap, and the two lines would probably complemet each other very well.
The downside however is the SPARC vs PowerPC war that would erupt, ditch one, ditch the other, keep both?
Bonus all the media on the public fights between McNealy and Jobs.
Sun and Apple merge.
Think about that for a second.
Anyway we'll be watching what happens to the Proliant line and begin evaluating the IBM offerings.
Good call. I can probably hit the lawn of the centre block by pitching off the roof.
That was kinda where I was going. I really don't want to pay more for media, but I'd like my hard drive to be my own.
SSCA or tax on blank media? I know what I'd choose if I had to. Don't get me wrong neither sit well with me but given the choice.....
Aside from that, sounds like java to me, and the IDE of choice would probably be the IBM Visual Age thingy.
Ya ya performance..... so.. the newer buisness desktops are at a minimum Celeron 900's. Add to that the IBM JRE and....

Standing by and watching it happen.

And if all the manufacturers get together with the DRM hard drives, and chips etc... I'll be buying knock-off chips and low capacity hard drives.
"Dad I need a new cd player, the one I have won't play my new N'SYNC CD"
Some one will fina a "run as service" exploit.
OK perhaps darwin isn't ready for prime time, but hey....

Smart card readers (for your key), and voice dictation software. A keyboard logger can't work, if you don't user the keyboard.

On the web page it's TG, but shouldn't it be WG?

Dude that 10Gbps, the G meaning Giga.
