    Using a pencil on a space station would be a big no-no; considering that chunks of the pencil itself would be flying off all the time, graphite dust would be flying everywhere (mucking up machines as well as lungs), and you'd have a hell of a time using a conventional pencil-sharpener.

    The (horrible) encryption implementation for DVD's wasn't even 'cracked'; one of the liscenced DVD playing programs (Xing's I think) stored it's keys in the clear, so all you had to do was hex edit the program to retrieve the keys.

    The encryption algorithms weren't 'broken', it's a bad implementation of key escrow (which is a dumb idea to begin with).

    But, nobody had to break into the super-secret-MPAA-DVD-key vault. The decryption keys were stored in the clear in one of the DVD player programs (Xing's I think), so getting the keys didn't even require an illegal act.

    I actually don't buy many CD's. It is true, however, that mp3's are a bad quality copy. They offer 12:1 compression, and you don't get that kind of compression without being VERY lossy. I use mp3's to listen to my music because it's conveniant and easy, but I would never consider using mp3's to archive music because of the lossy compression.
