Using a pencil on a space station would be a big no-no; considering that chunks of the pencil itself would be flying off all the time, graphite dust would be flying everywhere (mucking up machines as well as lungs), and you'd have a hell of a time using a conventional pencil-sharpener.
In that case, they could sue every node that the copyright-infringing data went through, sue the ISPs, sue the backbones, sue the modem manufacturers...
The (horrible) encryption implementation for DVD's wasn't even 'cracked'; one of the liscenced DVD playing programs (Xing's I think) stored it's keys in the clear, so all you had to do was hex edit the program to retrieve the keys.
But, nobody had to break into the super-secret-MPAA-DVD-key vault. The decryption keys were stored in the clear in one of the DVD player programs (Xing's I think), so getting the keys didn't even require an illegal act.
What difference does it make if the students are "honor students" or "local idiots"?
Also, it doesn't matter who brings knives to school, they are just as dangerous in the hands of smart people as stupid people.
I actually don't buy many CD's. It is true, however, that mp3's are a bad quality copy. They offer 12:1 compression, and you don't get that kind of compression without being VERY lossy. I use mp3's to listen to my music because it's conveniant and easy, but I would never consider using mp3's to archive music because of the lossy compression.

Most systems don't have a root account, or any other type of user-limiting functions for that matter (windows/mac).

When the FBI starts killing more people then criminals each year, then you should start worrying.

It really isn't that tough to find, Here's a list of the debian ISO servers.

The encryption algorithms weren't 'broken', it's a bad implementation of key escrow (which is a dumb idea to begin with).

Uhh, your system must really suck, because I installed RH 6.2 on a p90 with a 4x cd drive in less than an hour (that includes seting up all hardware).

I would assume that you replace your oil regularly to prevent engine failure.
Change my oil? No thanks.

The windows registry would be a lot more useful if it was in plaintext with documentation and examples.

And by "influence of the software industry" I'm sure he really meant "complete, monopolistic control of the software industry".

By the time a probe arrived at any of the possible locations, you'd be long dead anyway.

No, those would still be the windows people talking.
