To a man with a hammer, every problem looks like a nail.
Just because the official word from the EFF is to cancel the protests _does not mean they will be cancelled_. The mailing-list free-sklyarov is still full of talk about protesting on Monday, and nobody seems to be backing down.
Join the list if you're still interested - remember, the gripe is with DMCA and the incarceration of Sklyarov more than it is a slam against Adobe. They were just dumb enough to be the first company to use their new-found powers.
Hmm. Is this really so amazing? The primary target for video games is: teenage/pre-teen boys. And the primary target for porn? Well, technically, the over 18 crowd, but if you think every teenage boy isn't counting down the days to when they turn 18, then you obviously weren't a teenage boy (or at least, not a horny one). What's next - people complaining that modern rock (such as light punk, metal, stuff you hear on 'alternative' stations and MTV) is too violent and sexual? Same frickin' people! You are more than the sum of what you consume.
One thing all my friends and I are wondering: wear can we get those really tight sunglasses/goggles that Malkovitch wears (you can see them in the trailers too)?
I suggest that you don't start coding for a project right away. Despite what can be taught in books, you still won't write great code since you have so little real world experience. My suggestion? Find a project (should be tons of other sites mentions in comments) and try doing a non-coding aspect, such as documenting for a few months. You can gain an incredible amount of experience this way, and in all honesty, writing free software with bad code can be a very terrible thing. This isn't trying to be insulting, just suggesting that you not get too high and mighty simply because you've spent a lot of time ordering from FatBrain.
Why the hell has this been moderated up? It's an horrible extension that makes no sense based off an incorrect cliched assumption that Gore made months ago! Hey, Magane: Got any VCR flashing 12:00 jokes you'd care to share with us as well!
I think it's also good to point out that an overwhelmingly majority of convicted felons (especially for drug 'offenses') are minorities. It has been estimated that from 10 to 20% of the entire black population has lost their vote due to this. Any wonder no politician ever seems to give a damn about urban ghettos or the sources of these 'criminals'?
Um...no. I'm pretty sure that they would just move further to the right instead - after all; that shows that the majority wanted a Republican rule. We're not talking about Ross Perot style elections, with Nader getting 15-20% of the vote. We're talking about 5% *if* he's lucky.
Browne has and turned down the money. -- What the hell? Do you know what federal matching funds requires? You need a siseable showing in electoral polls, something that Nader hasn't even achieved (hence the big push for him in many Bush-centric states), and he wasn't allowed in the debates. If Browne has qualified and turned down the money, not only would he have been most likely featured in the television debates, but most newspapers would be asking if "A vote for Browne is a vote for Gore" instead of that same question with Nader/Bush. Your claim shows the typical amount of ignorance I'd expect from a libertarian. You are more than the sum of what you consume.
No, it was done like that because of the Republican congress. A statistical sampling actually yields more accurate results than does a total count (think of the error rates, people missing, ignoring, lying, etc., whereas a well-designed sampling can ameliorate or extinguish such causes or error). So why did the Republican party want a less accurate picture of the country? The majority of the population considers themselves to be liberal, not conservative, and any loss of the number of people counted translates to less Congressional representation, and hence, less liberal representation. Don't you just love politics?;)

Your article started out good Katz, but degraded into pointless pandering to geeks of the internet as a panacea. The best we can do for our schools is throw money at internet connections and computers? The communication revolution presented by the internet may facilitate creative hacking, but it doesn't improve lives, people do. And, like any distribution of randomness, there will be people of immense virtue, and people of immense evil. The internet is a reflection of the real world, with all of her highs and lows in equal measure. When will you give it a rest and realize that the internet won't cure every ill known to humanity? You are more than the sum of what you consume.
Isn't the way the story was written a bit hypocritical? It doesn't appear that the code is free as in speech, only free as in beer, and it has been released for RedHat 6.2 and SuSe 6.4 only? While I love Linux as much as any other nerd here, they're denying a large portion of the market to test out this machine, including other free OSes (*BSD). Had they released this code for Windows only, I'm sure they're would be plenty of commentary about AMD trying to suck up to M$. Free software should mean free for *everybody*.
Does anyone have a list of all companies Microsoft holds shares in (or vice-versa)? I think it'd be nice to have a list of the influence MS casts on other companies you might not think about...
What would be the point of taking a pill to make your body naturally produce caffeine than taking a pill of caffeine? Still need to take something. And if you just want something that drips into your synapse 24 hrs. a day, why don't you just create something to coax your body to make it's innate productivity enhancers? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that the way brain-affecting drugs worked was that they were analogues to internal chemicals, meaning that they bind to the same receptors, but are not actually those chemicals.
While the careful calibration of video-game feedback devices may be useful in 'fixing' ADD, it still gives the impression that 'hyperactive' kids are somehow bad and need to be cured. Some of the best and brightest people I know have ADD and to think of their curiosity and their mind being 'cured' is disconcerting, to say the least. This country is quickly sliding down into a carefully controlled society, with very little deviation from the 'standard' allotted. Perhaps if our society had less influences from corporate behemonths selling soundbites to our children, we could see some real improvement.
Hmm. I was always taught that 'democracy' was a form of government in which the people managed their government, as opposed to an oligarchy or any other sort of government. How do you equate a search engine with the democracy of the internet? Nice job using feel-good buzzwords to help push your message across. Maybe you could get a job with Microsoft ("America is great. Microsoft is great. Therefore, Microsoft is great for America. You don't hate America. Do you?").
The last protest about this case that I remember was sometime back in January/Febuary by my local 2600 crew (in Washington DC). Now that an actual RULING has come down, in exactly the manner we feared, are there any more protests/leaf-letting activities planned? I think a great idea would be to pass out printed copies of the source code, pointing out that it could one day be illegal unless they take action.
The somewhat mandatory sharing of files with Napster is a good thing IMO. While you can hide them, or be a jerk and put your bandwidth down at 28.8 to discourage sharing, eventually you learn to love sharing. And isn't that what sharing is really about? Love? Hmm, I really wish I could some sort of love-sharing device IRL. Would really enlarge my self-esteem (among other things).
Isn't this exactly what the cyberpunk genre has been predicting for decades? A world run by gigantic corporations, who wield power as ruthlessly and viciously as any faschist government.
The software *Industry* is just that, an industry. What makes us think they'd be anymore fair and just than any other industry out there? Hell, almost every software company I can think of should have union the working conditions are so wretched. Check out the good dossier on Old Tricks in The New Economy for what really happens. Maybe this will knock some sense into all the teens out there reading/., thinking that a life of luxury and leisure awaits them as office drones...
They should pull a trick like the CIA did when it was discovered their involvement with cocaine and Latin American contras - do an internal investigation and state that we found nothing out of order. The media/public bought it last time.
Let the speculation begin.....
