Anyway, for some good eye candy (both GBA and Game Cube), check out Nintendo's E3 site

    E3's eye candy isn't screenshots...

  2. Mime types built into the file system? on XFS 1.0 is Released · · Score: 1
Can anybody who's used these new FSs can comment on whether they have the file's mime type as a 'field'? I find this feature absolutely essential for stopping the 'web server has to guess a mime type, web browser tries to guess a mime type, file managers try to guess too...'. Ugh! And don't tell me about magic numbers.

A BeOS-wielding friend informs me it does that right, but I haven't had personal experience with it for more than a few minutes.

  3. Everybody who's tried DDR seems to like it... on Is DDR Worth It? · · Score: 1
Even if it costs a dollar or more per game.

Mind you, we might not be talking about the same DDR.

On an off-topic note, games like this are rather easy to write; so why don't we have more of them? I'm sure someone has/will publish schematics + drivers to allow us to use DDR mats. And I'm sure you'll agree with me when I say the Linux community could probably use a better sense of rhythm.

  4. So now DVD is OK all of a sudden? on Princess Mononoke Released On DVD · · Score: 5
So DVD is evil and nobody should ever use it as long as CSS and region encoding are employed, but the moment a movie's out which you like, you just rush and get it?

I will never buy a DVD with CSS. If that means I'll never be able to watch another movie for the rest of my life, so be it.

  6. Are non-graphic novels subject to censorship too? on Censorship in Australia · · Score: 1
I wonder whether the bible, with all of that sex and violence, would be approved.

Are web sites in Australia subject to the same laws? Would an Australian adult be able to look at this content online? How about a kid? Does it matter if the servers are located in Australia or not? What if the content is downloadable? Is saving it an offense? printing it? giving a copy to a friend?

Even trying to enter a frame of mind which states "this is harmful to our citizens; we can and will make sure they are not exposed to this" makes me shudder.

  7. Foreign language support? on Wine Runs Word 2000 And Excel 2000 · · Score: 1
I know many people who wouldn't be able to use that simply because they need, as well as English, support for another language. Word/Excel foreign language handling depends on the operating system (the Hebrew version of Word, for example, needs the Hebrew version of Windows).

WINE is not feasible for these people as it stands right now, putting them (and most non-English speaking countries) several years behind.

  8. Re:For the Veep & the Gov on Ask the Presidential Candidates · · Score: 1
Can I get a "none of the above" choice on my ballot please?

Well, maybe not in the U.S. , but in some other countries you can. Instead of putting a piece of paper with one of the pre-defined choices, people can write their own choice on a blank piece of paper or even vote with a blank one.

It's a way to say "It's not that I don't want to take the time to vote, but that I have nobody to vote for.

Mind you, sometimes you get people voting for murderers, supermodels and such.

Imagine the possibilities of creating an open-standard console anybody can manufacture...

    Openboy, anyone?

I really dislike the fact that with every new generation of consoles you have to replace all your controllers, and software has to be rewritten from scratch... think about a game header including the minimum requirements (memory, colors, screen size, processor speed...) an open console like that could stay pretty much backwards compatible within the same processor family.

Of course, you'd argue that we already have computers for game development which can do everything a console can; but we all know that's not strictly true, and there's hardly a gameboy-like computer for handheld development. (Color palms? I don't think so).

  12. Where to get Infocom's classics and how to run 'em on Text Adventures On Cell Phones · · Score: 1
Did anybody ever port Leather Goddes to either Linux or Windows. If so anybody know where to get it.

Most of Infocom's games, including LGOP, were in their .z5 format, playable on a wide range of machines. If you have the game files (you can probably find the Infocom masterpieces collection, 33 games on one CD) all you need is an interpreter.

Download the Zork 1-3 .z5 files (they might possibly be renamed to .dat) at http://www.concentric.net/~Twist/WinFrotz/download .shtml . These are freely redistributable.

Download interpreters for your platform at ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive /interpreters-infocom-zcode/
