  1. Please don't ruin it Hollywood! on Hitchhiker's Guide Movie Greenlighted · · Score: 1

The radio series is still the definitive Hitch Hiker, with of course the books a close second.

The BBC TV series was VERY cheesy but let's be honest here, so was the Radio show - that's the whole point!

I hope they do Douglas Adams justice with the movie. Who knows, they just might, but I have a feeling I'll leave the movie theatre disappointed.

Actually, it astonishes me the system works as well as it does. The cable company is streaming a high quality MPEG which you can pause and rewind to hundreds of people and it rarely lags. Very impressive if you ask me, I would love to know how the technology work so well.

All of my VISA cards have "check ID first" written in the signature block, so far I've been asked for ID maybe half a dozen times in the last year (I use my cards every day). Most place don't even look at the signature.

I say this to my users almost every day of the week.

"See that little globe in the corner with the little yellow bubble saying "New updates are ready to install"? Pay attention to it!"

Unfortunately, most people expect a computer to just work. They have little e-mail blobs and little surf the web blobs and little write documents blobs that they can just about grasp. When they see new blobs appear on the screen they don't understand them, so they ignore them.

I just wish the users would come knocking on my door and ask what the blob meant! Example: my car was maing a funny squeeking noise every time I stopped, I had no idea what it meant cause I'm not a mechanic. So I asked my Father-in-law, who is a mechanic. Glad I did, the funny squeeking noise was my brakes wearing down, imagine the mess I would have been in if I'd continued to ignore it and they failed?

  15. Don't work from home on How Do You Get Work Done? · · Score: 2, Interesting

That is probably your biggest problem. When in school, I never got work done at home, too many distractions! The best thing to do if you want to get some serious studying done, go to the library or form a study group (yeah, nerdy as hell but think of the nice big salary you're working towards in a few years).

Think of school as a job, a shitty paying job but a job nonetheless, and make set hours every day that you'll dedicate to work. Sneak in lunchtimes and breaks as well or you'll burn out in a couple of hours. It'll get you into a routine that'll ultimately end up in that nice piece of paper that's your ticket to big bucks (hopefully!).

It doesn't get any better in the real world either, I have a hard time getting motivated even though I know I'm getting paid for it!

Go to Disneyworld in the winter months, the weather is far nicer (Winter is the best time in FL, it stays in the 70's most of the time with low humidity) and you will hardly have to queue. Plus
the most important thing: very few tourists!

Hint from a Geek: Those FRS radios are cool and all and useful for malls, don't even bother trying to use one at Disneyworld. Last time we wen, every channel was utterly congested. Take along your 2m handheld instead, much nicer (what do you mean you don't have a ham radio license?).

[1] They're not all rude, mostly of the rudest people are Europeans (I'm one of them, and ashamed of it everytime I see how other Europeans misbehave). We can learn a lot from Japanese tourists, they are the most respectful polite people. I've met very few ignorant Japanese people.

Never underestimate the simple joy you can get from walking a couple of miles every day, especially if you do it right after work. It helps clear your mind and makes you far less likely to arrive home grumpy after a bad day at work. Even more fun if you can get someone to keep you company!

Why? It's the most streamlined and simple ditribution there is and always has been. After 10 years it still has not succumb to the bloat that all the other distributions have done so far. I don't have to fiddle around with the silly "tools" that other distributions (Linuxconfig, ugh! Yast, ugh!) insist I use just to get my system running, Slackware let's me do it my way.

I don't think it's so much the fightning for glory and gain attention thing, it's more a lack of time.

Most geeks are creative because, basically, they have no social life. Once they start dating, they get a life so instead of staying home doing geeky stuff all the time they spend a considerable amount of time with their significant other.

Once they start living together/get married (the two are basically the same thing: most married people live together, at least at first!) they have even less time to do geeky stuff. Then the kids arrive and they have no free time whatsoever.

    That's my personal experience, anyway.
