  1. Stereo speakers defeat this on The Sound of Safety? · · Score: 1

Also, the sound is more like spray-painting. The schusss schuss description makes it sound like a multi-tone sound, but it's not. It's just a burst of white noise. Perhaps a better sound for outdoor use would be a large duck quack, since they are not supposed to have an echo. That way, you'd be sure to know what direction it comes from, because you'd have to be within the line-of-sound to hear it.

  2. OnStar Dweebs on Smart Car, Or Dumb Idea? · · Score: 1

Better yet... have a sleepy button that summons one of the OnStar(tm) dweebs. When they get sleepy calls, they can scream at you, tell jokes, etc. Maybe comedians could try out their new material on drivers? Electrodes are probably the best bet though.

Maybe some criminals will be caught? That would be good. I doubt that mistaken identity would really be an issue. In rare cases, say your doppleganger is a criminal, it should be fairly simple to show that you're not them. I also doubt that resembling a criminal would be enough to lock you away mistakenly.

  4. Don't be a criminal. on Tampa's Cameras Not Just For The Superbowl · · Score: 1

Problem solved. If you're out in public, you're putting yourself out there anyway, you're up for grabs. Should we tell police not to look at your face as you walk down the street, lest your rights be violated? This is dumb. Like the Barretta theme song says, If you can't do the time, then don't do the crime, yeah, don't do it.

Yes, I agree. My dad got this P3, 500mhz from Gateway. I also happen to have a p3, 500mhz which I built from quality components. Dads was running dog-ass-slow. Get this... they preinstalled some bizarre backup software that apparently runs in the background making copies of everything you do, so you can restore your computer! The harddrive was always churning, even while idle! It literally took about 20 seconds to open an app that opens in about 2 seconds on mine. Plus, he had the typical array of crap in the systray. I cleaned it up for him, and he is amazed at the difference. Point being... they load all this crap on the latest-greatest-fastest, so they run slower, so the end user will want to buy an even faster later-greater-faster model next year. It's stupid.

  13. I don't care. on Windows XP and Incompatibilities with Multi-Booting? · · Score: 2

I'm not punishing myself by giving MS more of my money in exchange for the headache of reinstalling another Windows, reinstalling apps, etc. It's crap. I'll do whatever I can to prevent new versions of Windows from entering my workplace (approx 1000 pcs, approx 12 knowledgeable users). There really is NO need for it. I say we all band together and say, Win9x is fine for Gomer. Office97 is fine for Gomer. Only order pcs that work with win9x, order them without the latest stinky version of Windows, ghost them all identically, and leave Gomer alone. Maybe Gomer will learn how to use what he/she has if we leave it alone long enough?

  14. Very cool + Porn Tip on Color Photography with B&W Film · · Score: 1

It is nice to come across something actually interesting on a Sunday. This is much like how projection tv's work. BTW... I read about some sort of filtering software that scans emails and etc. for images containing a lot of flesh tones. To get around that, try dropping a color several notches, and change the filename... for example, notpornR-50.jpg. The end viewer can adjust the red, in this case, up 50, and get a pretty picture. Or... color-based news groups... for example... alt.binaries.pictures.erotica.red.midgets alt.binaries.pictures.erotica.blue.midgets alt.binaries.pictures.erotica.green.midgets Build a script to split out the 3 versions and crosspost appropriately, another to retrieve and combine them. Moral: Every new technology trick is immediately analized for its porn value.

  15. How it works here on On Call and Underpaid in IT/IS? · · Score: 1

Here's how it works here... A number of us rotate being on-call, a week at a time. There's a small hourly pay for this. In addition, any calls that require coming in physically (punch-in) automatically give you a minimum of 2 hrs, at time-and-a-half = 3 hrs of pay. So, Joe Gomer lost his taskbar, come in, ka-ching!, 3 hrs worth of pay for 10 minute's work (minus driving time). All told, it ends up being a few hundred extra bucks, give or take, depending on how stupid the users are being, and depending on how many times the NT servers die. Still, being on call is a royal hassle, so I usually let one of the lowly technicians take mine (I'm an admin).

  17. Re:Alt. OSes.. sure, but what about apps? on Microsoft Turning Screws on Customers · · Score: 1

Well.... I work in the health-care industry. At our site, there are probably at least a dozen apps specific to the industry that the software manufacturers spent millions of dollars to get to work on MS OSes. I doubt they would suddenly cater to the notion of building alternate OS version, and I can't blame them really. Other industries are probably in the same situation. Plus, when it comes down to it, end-users want their solitaire (I know it exists for other OSes)!

  18. Alt. OSes.. sure, but what about apps? on Microsoft Turning Screws on Customers · · Score: 2

I'm for using alternate OSes, even better ones, and do where I can. The problem with the idea of switching over to Linux is the lack of apps. Sure there are office suites, but there are thousands of specialty apps built ONLY for MS OSes, with no comparable 'free' alternative. The big hurdle I see is the lack of a standard, and lack of development tools built on this standard to start replacing these MS only apps. For us geeks, it's loads of fun to have a non-MS OS, but end-users don't care, they need the apps that they've struggled to learn.
