  1. install review... on Myst III: Exile Review · · Score: 1
I had a similar experience installing Myst III on a brand new 1.2G Athlon, assuming that would be enough after it failed to run on an old P400 (without 3D graphics). I exchanged the game once before I finally visited the Myst III web site, and low and behold, my problem appeared in the first 5 FAQ. I switched my CD drive letters to D and E and haven't looked back. I have to agree with Michael on the install, no one should have to go through that.

As far as a GAME review is concerned, I'm finding Exile to be as beautiful and riviting (if not more) than the previous two Mysts. The puzzles are challenging, the video effects are gorgeous, and the plot meets Myst expectations.

It's unfortunate that Ubi Soft didn't wait a month or two the fix the install bugs, but I would encourage anyone dedicated to playing Myst III to first visit the well-updated web site FAQ, and buy the game pre-warned. (Hey, I notice it went down in price too!)

They'd naturally have to work towards improving image filters. Initially, anything that looks like a breast will be left out, and you wouldn't be able to access a site with photos of, say, the US capitol building. After a while, the robots would catch on, and you'd find sites like http://www.iamlost.com/features/robotporn/ mysterious bookmarked on you computer. Hmm, you're right. It just wouldn't work.

  3. robot porn on The Internet is America-centric, But for How Long · · Score: 2
Artificial intelligence is the obvious answer.

Countries with stricter porn laws, for example, will need to code computers to recognize the naked human (animal?) form, and ban such images/sites.

This is equally likely to happen as changing the laws...

  4. IT is the whole company on The IT Labor Shortage · · Score: 2

Not only is it not difficult to find an IT job, people who are not computer scientists by training such as mathematicians and other scientist seem to find themselves programming for a living. Anyone who is capable of learning how to work on/with computers is expected to, where I work. It seems to me that programmers will be the blue-collar workers of the 21st century. People will be expected to program, instead of choosing it. (Still there are those lucky few who actually LIKE to program/fix computers...) :-)

I love carrying a book around in my pocket via palm pilot, but I agree about the tactile appeal of a book. When all is said and done, I'd rather have an electronic copy and want to print it, than a book copy and want to scan it.

This may or may not be as useful for quantum chem, but for all you statisticians out there who don't want to fork out bookoo bucks for SAS or S+ licensing, there's a S+ cousin called R... You make a good point so I hate to disagree, but Matrea was my second gripe about this ep. (The first being "why don't they pull the power cord?") I mean, aside from her reason for creating the game character being her feelings of inadequacy, I felt that SHE should've been the one fighting to keep the game alive. Instead it was her partner. She was ready to do whatever Mulder told her to do and was all apologetic and docile. Puhleze. Is she demented or not? Let's have some character consistency.

And how come those butch male characters in games are never wearing such small outfits??? If _I_ coded a game...
    well, you know... :-)

Yes, women will play as men... partially for the same reasons y'all have stated, but ADDITIONALLY because a lot of games give you only a male character to play with. Also, personally, I've never been offended by name-calling so much that I'd refuse to play a female character. It's just a game, folks...
