Duh, half of us got into Linux because we're too cheap to buy $90 worth of OS.
I'll have to read this when I have some free time - I never really understood the way things work inside the kernel, how X works internally, and that sort of thing. Let's hope that's all in there.
And to think all this time I just had it next to my computer. Think of the possibilities - going downstairs for coffee......... wow. I think I have a downstairs section of my house somewhere......... (much searching for stairs) Nope, I guess I don't.
Just think of all the other possibilities: we'll have enough IPs for our video game systems (gamecube, ps2, and *shudder* xbox), all of our other internet thingies (internet radios that nobody ever buys, networked mp3 players, and such), and other things that I can't remember right now.
I shouldn't have bought all those Ununoctium and Higgs boson futures! First pets.com, now this! I guess I'll just invest in record companies and Microsoft.
That's one thing I've sorely missed compared to M$ VB - a way for a non-coder to quickly hack out a GUI interface, then put some cheap-ass scripting behind it to make it work. Delphi was pretty good at this, but I never enjoyed the language it used (Pascal, IIRC) as much as VB. Oh well, it's never too late to pick up another language, especially if I don't have to break the law to use it. (I never paid for VB)

They took a lot of flak for planning to sell it for $1000, and this way, people will try it on their open projects, and say "Wow! Borland really did something neat! Gee! I think I'll give them some more money so I can charge money for things I make! And I'll end all my sentences with exclamation points!! Hooray!!!" YMMV, however.

...the MPAA is screwing themselves over with shitty movies, so we don't have to do it by watching them after buying them. I guess I'll just goof around with my 8-year-old camcorder rather than fork over $8 to see a movie I've seen before.

And then, they can punish the RIAA using their Free Music hammer, or Hammer for short. That way, it could be ARM & HAMMER. It would be cooler if we could get MC Hammer in on the deal (if he hasn't been shot to death like all those other rappers we never hear about.):)

I think of it like driving a home-built car. It's not as polished as a production car, but you can customize it because it comes with less overhead such as OnStar, air conditioning, a GUI, and MSN. It would be possible to make a home-built car a production car, just by mass producing it, but nobody would buy it because it wouldn't be as easy to use as a production car. What you have to do to a home-built custom car to make it so droves of people will pay for it is to smooth out the interface, add a dashboard, radio, CD player, airbags, and other things that improve the driving experience for the average driver. Likewise, Linux isn't catching on with the large-scale home market because it doesn't always boot into a GUI, it doesn't come loaded up with Microsoft Office (or the equivalent), and things generally don't fit together as well as they do in Windows. The standards in Linux are more robust, but they aren't as invisible as the ones in Windows.

HP, in its' current form, seems to be quite happily making products for consumers, and making the drivers necessary to reach the largest single market: Win9x users. If more people used Linux, they would be forced to make drivers. However, since their goal is to make money (and what corporation doesn't want to do that), they are going to save some money and time and effort by doing what they have to to get themselves some money.

Does nothing well. Look at the combination server/desktop platform our friends in Redmond have. (I'm not talking Nintendo, either.) It can't even keep a simple messaging service running.

Do what I always do on privacy-violating forms: lie! That's right. If everybody lies, companies will realize that asking consumers information that they don't want to provide is about as reliable as a record player in a paint shaker. Soon, they'll give up. So, please, everybody claim that you're either a 116-year-old woman who likes snowboarding or a 21-year-old man who enjoys knitting.

Plains Indians were hunting buffalo (sometimes) by setting fires and driving whole herds off cliffs.
It's not that dramatic. They actually didn't start huge fires, they just used torches. And the cliffs weren't Looney Tunes style mile-high cliffs, they were more like 75-degree hills. And they only got three or four buffalo at once. You can see this at Wanuskewin, outside of Saskatoon, Canada.

I tend to believe most parents would have an easier time forking over $300 for a PS2/XBox over a PC, especially if that PS2 came with a module to allow basic internet/WWW interactivity (including e-mail) and basic functions like word-processing.
SEGA tried that with the Saturn. It died a horrible death. Then they tried it with Dreamcast. Now they produce games for Nintendo. How wrong is that?

Are they going to change their name? America OnLine isn't as good anymore that it's international, extending into nations that used (still might) hate us.

I won't delete it, but I will drastically reduce it. Besides, comments weigh in at 1k, if I guess correctly.
Yeah, that's what the other 50% did, although I'm sure there's some overlap.
