We can do with what we already have. I really don't need new hardware - my 1-year-old machine runs 3DS, Premiere, gcc, and TFC just fine. The hardware manufacturers *could* write bloated code, but if one manufacturer did what was right instead of bloat, they could put everybody else out of business. Instead of communally trying to shaft consumers, maybe businesses should strive for excellence. It's more profitable in the end, and the real world wouldn't go Atlas Shrugged as a result of it.

we'll have to h4x0r our X-Box... or just run a PC on top of our TV. Still, I hope they open-source everything that they haven't yet, so we can hack out our set-top Linux box that's faster than the Dreamcast.

You forget the king of in-game advertising: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1&2 - they got advertisers to sponsor tournaments in-game, skateboards, ramps, shoes, clothes, and so on. A pity they did it to such a fun game, too. Now all they need for the next game is naming tricks after sponsors. The "Lazy-Ass-Grind" would become something like the "Levi's-sit-on-your-skateboard-Grind."

Maybe music. Wesley Willis is a pioneer in this field, even though he probably doesn't get paid for it. Every song of his ends with "Rock over London/Rock on Chicago/Wal-Mart/It's always the low prices." (The ad depends on the song, of course.)

If you like it, the Criterion Beastie Boys anthology is also incredibly good, thanks to the plethora of extra camera angles, audio tracks, and other things that make it an all-around good disc. There's something like 60 (10*6) versions of Intergalactic on there without going into the commentary and subtitle tracks, and the DVD is regionless so you can play it anywhere.

YDKJ is done w/ pretty low-level stuff: no Shockwave or anything like that. The first three can run on a 486/66. The sound mixing in all 4 that I have played is simply incredible. In 'The Ride,' if you ever play the same theme twice, the experience is completely different based on which questions are randomly selected to go first. They are lots of fun if you have a Win32 or MacOS9 system hanging around.

You can see an ext2 partition on the drive - Windows doesn't have the built in tools to parse the stream of data as a filesystem, but it is possible to write a win9x program to directly read the disk and interpret the filesystem for itself. In WinNT, there are third-party drivers to read ext2 partitions just like another mount.

Fortunately, most people who dual-boot their systems between Linux and Windows are smart enough to recognize the risks involved in running viri. If you can set up two OSes to work on one computer, surely, you can install some sort of defense against viruses, be it a virus scanner, only downloading from known good sites, and other tactics. If not, then you are just asking for trouble.

Rumor has it that the virus is spread by upper management, so let's look at the source:

This would not be good in most FPS games, because of something I call "confused immersion" - in game, if you hear a sound to the left, and you turn your head left, the enemy is right in your crosshairs. What if the phone to your left rings? You turn to get it, and... "KABOOM!! Terrorists win!" Stick with your hand-held mouse for games. And don't get me started on whiplash in the workplace cases.

It can't - my/dev/hda0 partition is NTFS, and 9x doesn't have its' partition until way the hell out on/dev/hda6. If it followed the flags, it would not find a C: drive, since 9x can't mount NTFS. It would also not be able to find itself because it looks for itself on drive C.
9x follows its own queer way of assigning drive letters:/dev/hda1, if FAT, gets C:;/dev/hdb1, if FAT, gets D:;/dev/hdc1, if FAT, gets E:;/dev/hdd1, if FAT, gets F:; (here's where it gets gay)/dev/hda2, if FAT, gets G:. The first partition on a drive gets a drive letter before the second partition on the first drive.

I was just generally using mutations as a blanket term, because it was early in the morning and I couldn't think of complex things like combining different genotypes.
One thing I failed to address was the fact that some Critters need to die off as a result of the evolution of the whole.

This type of story will probably start a flamewar, but here's my take: Diversity good. If mutations weren't everywhere, not as many things could survive a changing environment. If Critter A makes millions of subtly different copies of itself, while every instance of Critter B is identical, and a large disaster comes along that only rare mutations of Critters can survive, Critter A will be the only one to carry on its genes. Critter B, due to it's lack of mutations, would not live to see another day.

There are TVs and VCRs that work with both types of signal, and some cell phones do the same thing. This auto-suicide feature would be aimed more towards restricting things to actual regions, not inadvertent differentiation such as these differing standards have.
