And there are kids who hated every single moment that they were forced to learn Algebra, Factoring Polynomials, working out acceleration, biochemical nomenclature, etc.
Gym, or physical education, is more about giving the kids physical exercise because obesity is a growing problem, as kids are excercising less and less. Running for 1 hour every day when you're growing up SHOULD be enforced, lest we start seeing heart failure by the age of 16.
Art and Drama do not end in unemployment. There are always calls for professional voice acting, radio advertisements, dancers, singers, etc. All over.
Seriously - there is a reason these courses are mandated. What is torture for you is heaven for someone else, and vice versa.
Because I'm sure the people working IT would have different statistics, given that we generally have ALOT more access to ALOT more information. I can read people's emails, I can look up every work order, I can view everyone's hard drives, browser history, heck, anything leaving the company network gets some log by the proxy.
I'm sure IT guys could find alot more valuable information, and as such, might be more willing to sell it.
Why do any of it then? What is the point of studying sciences aimed towards the continuation of the human race if we do not enjoy or encourage that which makes us human?
But not everyone was born to be a scientist. Likewise, not everyone was born to be an actor. The basic school system is (supposed) to teach you how to read, and write, and the rest of regular society so that you can function no matter what you try to do.
And every high schooler could get by doing basic sciences if they wanted to, learning basic common knowledge. Now, I don't have any statistics to support this, but my guess is that there are more science classes offered than art classes. Every highschool I know of (which is about 3) offered Chemistry, Biology, and Physics, and a general science course. Only 2 of them offered Drama, and only 2 of them offered Art. Whether this was because of class demand or under-funding I'm not sure, but my basic statement remains:
If you want to improve conditions it is not just about improving "Scientific Education" - because not everyone is into that. If you improved conditions for everyone, all around, you'll see more out of it. There is more to America besides Landing on the Moon, designing Nukes, and Giant Dams.
Of course not, but if you had to pick the part of it that is most world renowned, it'd make the top of the list.
But its not the only place experiencing such a "decline". I mean, its harder to judge artistic stature because its a topic so open to opinions. One person might like it, another might not. It's all just an expression. A movie is someone telling a story. A song is someone else's abstract thoughts. How do you judge artistic value on such things?
Originality and Eloquence, just to name a couple. I think most people here would agree that Hollywood movies are not as original as they once were. I also think most people here would agree that a majority of "America's top 40 hits" in this current day and age are not Eloquent.
I just find difficulty giving the same credit to awesome CGI Explosions as I do Shakespeare.
No, but it has taken those soon-graduates interested in Biology to go towards a medical degree as opposed to studying human remains & Archaeology. When it comes to the education that pretty much determines your future, the money plays a pretty big roll. And we've reached the day and age where kids start thinking about it in high school.
It's true - when growing up I was among the more technically inclined kids and thus was slightly interested in computer sciences. While programming was fun I wasn't sure if its what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
However, when I was old enough to start looking at the numbers, I realized it was a good field to get into. Little Post secondary required to land a high paying job.
When scientific research reaches such a status, I'm sure the same thing will happen. A handful of people I know wish they could become theoretical physicists, but because the money isn't there, they go into Engineering.
America's artistic value continues to decline with each hollywood blockbuster to be released. No studies whatsoever have been made to test if it could possibly be correlated to poor schooling in the fields of Language Arts, Drama/Theatre, and Humanitarian studies.
Up Next, a story about how a 3 legged dog saved a baby.
I still play Age of Empires 2, so that I know if I mystically get teleported back to medeival ages, I will be the best General the world has ever scene.
Now, how do I make real life town centers 'build' villagers?
I personally cannot think of a Single Player only game to have come out in the last 3 years which has failed to do just that. Any game that focuses on the immersive 1 player experience does it rather well, the story-telling is something like reading a book (for those who enjoy reading books) or like watching a movie (for those who... yeah you get the idea). Single player games really do tailor it to the user so their gameplay always seems to line up with the story rather well, mostly because there are no other elements to cloud it up.
I kind of prefer it that way, it seems like a 1 on 1 with the developers. I felt like I got to know Valve and their new acquisitions when I played Portal. I could tell they had a good sense of humour, and really loved mystery. And I don't know about the rest of people, but I feel awkward playing that type of game with someone watching. Even now, I'm going through Dragon-Age on the 360, which means its on the TV in the living room - and I can honestly say I don't enjoy playing the game when someone is watching. I know that when my room mates played it they skipped the dialogue. They did things differently, sometimes in an easier way. They feel the need to interject a joke in the midst of my playing. Maybe I'm just insecure, but I prefer it when I'm immersed so deeply into a game that I lose track of time. But when someone is there I can't help but feel like I should try to make it entertaining for them too, which is sometimes different then what I find entertaining.
And when you throw in a multiplayer experience - all storyline kind of gets tossed out the window. Its no longer about you and the designers, its now about you and your friends. You don't care about the characters story so long as their stats are better then your team mates. You are no longer playing a role, but rather playing a game.
And when a game feels like just a game, you couldn't care less how it ends.
I'd hardly call that Scantily. I want something like SIN Episodes: Emergence - where I can see a Thong on the box cover and the opening sequence has a very suggestive waterfall scene.

You can't equate the scoring to school.
Letter Grades are how much you SHOULD be learning, and are completely independent on averages. An easy class means 90% easy, the average is higher. A tougher class means that getting 70% is tougher, and the average is lower.
Many Engineering students drop out because of how tough the classes are. A friend of mine, wrote his first exam in Engineering, and got a 35% on it. After the Prof Curved the grade, he got an A-.
In other words - when someone gives you a 1 - 10 scale, assume that the very center is average, and that each unit of difference is equal to each other (the difference between 6 and 7 is the same as 4 to 5 and so on). Don't go arbitrarily adding Letter grade reference points because those were designed for the very specific reason of grading students, and NOT video game reviews.
Clearly you've never been addicted to something. Like, ADDICTED addicted, in the sense that your body physically feels different when you try to ween it off.
Don't get me wrong, I think you are right, that quitting is more about a person being disciplined and wanting to quit more than anything else, but to say that you won't feel anything when trying to quit is inaccurate.
Yes, you will get the shivers, and you will get the sweats, and you might even get the shakes. But you gotta fight through that shit.
I know, I was just poking fun at the fact that the world was a much simpler place when it was nasty brutish and short. I mean if I was a peasant in feudal times, the idea of all life on Earth ending instantly in a series of explosions, each large enough to level the town I lived in, I would have had no other explanation then Divine intervention.
Now-a-days, you're taught that it can happen if you aren't careful who you vote for.
Well, if you were able to challenge anyone who insults you over the net to a duel, pistols drawn at dawn, i'm sure the net would be a much friendlier place.
Can you imagine what the world was like 100 years ago? Where wars were fought on foot and were mostly civil wars, or simple trade disputes? Where mutually assured destruction and worrying how long your nukes will last were never present.
Or go back even further, like 500 years, where the world was a bold new place worth exploring, and if a war were to be fought, it'd be because you want to rescue the pope, or payback for a political insult, or because you were bored...
Sometimes I feel like I was born in the wrong century. The internet is way over-rated.
No, it doesn't require a totalitarian government at all.
Idealy - the populace would vote this system into place.
But greed and inconvenience means it won't.
Now, whether its better for a Government to take control over an issue regardless of the peoples general wishes, even if it were for the better of the people, is always going to spark a political debate.
It always boils down to history has shown this, modern day shows this, and before you know it, everyone is sour simply because they value different things.
Now yes, I personally would not mind someone telling me what to do if I could see that what they are telling me to do is doing what is in my interests. I hope that made sense.

I can finally read that Japanese Slashdot?
I've always wondered what crazy stuff goes on over there, I mean they are on the CUTTING EDGE.
or like to sit at home and compose haikus.
That was a problem in the 50's that could be blackmailed?

1 Word...
LEGO
was met by celebrations and champagne
Given the dangers involved and the expenses paid already, I think that was a terrible idea.

And the patch, and probably this Vaccine, essentially keep a bit of nicotine in your system, so that you don't feel those effects to lack of drug.
The drug is still in you, you just don't have all the harmful effects that come with smoking it.
What's more, there are no side effects

HP was the worst of the nine PC vendors listed, with a malfunction rate of 25.6% over three years
In order to malfunction it first must function, something HP's don't do very well, especially with all the nice bundled packages I have pre-installed.
