  1. Consider the source... on Wonkette and the Ethics of Online Journalism · · Score: 1, Troll

Yeah, I don't put much faith in blogs as news either- they are biased (as is my own The Rupertzone. But that's the point. On the other hand, Drudge, who definately leans to the right, gives the scoop much faster than the New York Times, ABC News, CNN, Washington Post, you name it. These places aren't happy that most web users go to The Drudge Report more often to get the latest breaking news. I've never seen anything posted inaccurately on Drudge's web site. This isn't to say it doesn't happen- I am sure it has.

The established press, or "big media" (Libs like to put the word "big" in front of things to make it sound worse) doesn't like it that individuals have the ability to spread their news and commentary to the worlds just as simply as they can. The more media giants slam sites like Drudge and private blogs, the more they validate the worth of such sites.

Yeah, they're gonna hear it sooner or later. I'd rather it be later. I'm not going to throw up my hands and give up on my child just because the rest of society seems to be doing so.

But you might be surprised how many PG and PG-13 movies have language that many parents don't want their children to hear (again, very young children, I'm not a total prude!)

I'll buy one. This is great. I can continue to watch movies without excluding my daughter. I don't care about all the sex scenes, and if it bleeps out swear words, I can probably figure out what was said.

Its not censorship if you willingly accept it and even embrace it. Censorship is bad, don't get me wrong, but in my house the parents are dictators and what (very young) children view is censored. That is just good parenting.

I don't understand what is wrong with this. If you don't like it, don't buy it- its as simple as that.

  7. How is this censorship? on Auto-Censoring DVD Player · · Score: 5, Insightful

Parents and owners of these things are simply decided what they do and do not want their familty to see. Are you saying that I must allow my young children to watch nudity, violence, and bad language or else I am some kind of fundamentalist?

These are tools for parents, nothing more, nothing less. Last I knew parents were allowed to raise their own children. Yeah- censorship is bad, for grown adults, but I plan on censoring the heck out of what I allow my children to see. There is no freedom of speech or freedom to view anything for a 9 year old.

Another way to look at this is as a tool of free speech. It allows parents to further control what their children see whild not forcing entire censorship. I would like to continue to watch movies as my daughter gets old enough to understand what she is seeing on the screen. Most of the time sex scenes and foul language does little to add to the story (I know there are exceptions, like Boogie Nights, for example).

Anyway, just my two cents-- there is no reason to freak out here. RCA and Walmart aren't trying to censor what you are allowed to see, rather, they are providing parents with a tool that will help us to raise our children as we see fit.

Socialistic governments have made paying taxes part of your purchase, so the consumer never realizes the government exploitation.

  11. Many sys admins are just plain jerks... on The Oft Frustrating Job of a Sysadmin · · Score: 1

You know, not everyone knows what sys admins do--- that's why sys admins are paid. Just yesterday where I work I witnessed a sys admin refuse to help with a machine that needed a bios update. He insisted that since he was not the "official adminstrator" of it, he couldn't touch it. Now, this machine is "adminstered" remotely. He stood there and told my boss- to her face, that a "good" sys admin would know how to do a bios update remotely.

    Huh? WTF?

There's no need to take advantage of people and act like a jerk about things. I've dealt with far too many rudy and cocky sys admins in my day.

  14. Bad catalogs... on Napster Sells 5 Million Songs · · Score: 4, Insightful

The great thing about the heyday of Napster/Kazza/others was the great availability of rare recordings-- Live Rush stuff, really old Pink Floyd, hard to find CSNY. The record companies have made it so, once again, we are not "allowed" to listen to this great stuff.

I checked out Napster just today. $9.99 a month and $.99 for a download. Big whoop. If I want to buy an album its still going to be $10-$20, depending on how many songs are on it, but now I get to pay an extra $9.99 a month to have the privilege to download.

IMHO, if you only download a couple of songs without getting the album, you are missing some great traks (b sides). Of course, this is only true to real music, not the boy band and rap crap that is popular these days....
