Hell Yeah! Can you say Ender's Game? Well not Ender's Game, but the other books in the series? You would get the computer's attention by subvocalizing "Jane", of course.
Yeah but the problem with that is, once your computer is playing U2, you can't give it any more voice commands because of the noise from the mp3s. Also, what if the singer says something the computer interprets as 'shut down'. Think that is not possible? You have never used Dragon Naturally Speaking before. Let it listen to MTV and you would not believe what crazy phrases it comes up with.
And there's another problem with your comment. Who on earth still listens to U2?:)
You know what will happen if this becomes popular? Violent video games will have an option to turn off the blood. We have seen games like this before. You know what this leads to? The same, realistic shooting games, except when people get shot, they vanish instead of bleed.
This will teach our children that when someone is shot, they don't bleed or cry in pain, they vanish painlessly. This can only have VERY BAD effects on kids.
These instant billboards probably won't be possible. It IS a really cool idea, but if you read the article you would have noticed that the blue dye can only work for 1000 hours. Since billboards would probably be lit up all the time, 1000 hours is not much.
I mean who wants to be the guy that replaces the billboard every 41.6 days?
>find out more about Pete Townshend at www.petetownshend.com, which used to be Linux-Netscape friendly, but I can't get to display properly anymore.
Well actually, with netscape 4.73, shockwave flash, and realplayer, everything on that page should work fine. betetownshend.com has been really good about only use plugins that are cross-platform. Yay for them!
There is a really sad bug in the latest stable version of GIMP. The enter key on the number pad doesn't work! I think this is a really silly thing to be in a program as evolved as GIMP. Anyone know if they finally got this fixed?
This is GREAT for Linux! Right now, I dual boot Linux and Win98 because it is a pain in the ass to do some things in Linux that are easy in windows (like getting games to work). My Linux is downloaded and my windows is pirated. If getting windows becomes more of a hassle for me than getting my video card or whatever to work in windows, my HD becomes one big ext2 partition.
Among high school and college students so many people who can't afford windows are still using it. If it becomes imposible to pirate, these people would be willing to put in the extra effort to use Linux, because is saves them $200 they dont have!
Yeah, and if ad blocking becomes popular, that is GOOD FOR US ALL! Because then companies will make deals with advertisers to put ads on their servers. This way, junk buster doesn't work, doubleclick can't track you, and your website loads faster because it doesn't have to contact multiple servers!
I think it is a GREAT idea! And click-through isn't important. Advertisers just want people to see their product name. Traditional media doesn't have click-through. It can only get better!
People think "oh no! 1% click-through!" But these people are not seeing the big picture. Newspapers and magazines have NO CLICK-THROUGH. And they are still in business. Business will still want people to see there names a lot, even if the people who see their names don't go to their sites.
Not everyone uses linux for political or spiritual reasons. In fact most people just want to get a job done. It would be just plain silly not to give the majority, who want to get something done, no option to easily do this in debian.
Well for this to work, they would have to have this thing connect to a server each time you run it, right? Well, all you would need to watch it as much as you want is a packet sniffer and an ethernet. Just see what IP it is connecting to, sniff the traffic, set up a computer on your lan with the IP of the server, and then use the ever-useful "route" command to tell your computer to access that IP on the local network. So your dummy server always tells the client it is ok to watch the movie!
And this isn't even such a bad thing, because your average win98 home user doesn't HAVE a local ethernet, so he/she can't do this. The small amount of piracy that goes on would be by motivated poor college student/high school student geeks who wouldn't buy the movie anyway!
first i think, oh wow, maybe now ICQ and AIM will be able to communicate with eachother and i won't have to have both programs. but the i think "AOL owns ICQ and AIM already, so they already knew the protocol!"
but i suppose this means someone will write a plugin for licq now that allows linux users to use both services with on client. can't wait!
The big question is what will happen to their internet services? What will happen to their hardware? These things are neither 'applications' nor 'operating systems.'
Sorry, you can't. I just got a patent on "a process by which a human may apply for a patent" so you can't get your silly, OBVIOUS patent unless you pay me.
Microsoft, I would like to thank you for your recent agression to andover.net. It has made reading slashdot a LOT more interesting recently and given me some good laughs. Keep it up!
Listen, man. What they are doing is running a bot that simply does searches on napster for "metalica" and, if you had ever used napster before you would know, it gives you a list of the usernames of people with mp3s that have "metalica" in the file name. Then they log it to a text file and print the usernames out. They have no way of being sure that those are actually illegal copies of metalica songs since they didn't download them, and if nobody has actually downloaded those songs, they can't accuse you of piracy. Their whole "5000 users" thing is probably just a perl napster client that runs ever 5 minutes and logs to a text file.
If you would have read the article you would have noticed that the modules was SUPPOSED to be there on time. The reason it wasn't is because the RUSSIANS didn't do their part. But you can't really blame them. Russia really should worry about feeding their people before they worry about these types of projects.
This cammera is the C|Net editor's choice and for a good reason. It also has a 99% approval rating on their site. Anybody wanting some great resources for picking a digital camera should go here: http://cnet.com/shopping/0-1427343-7-1436443.html? tag=st.cn.1.sptlt.1427343-7-1436443.
Thanks to them, I got the Olympus D-360L for about $250 and I am incredibly happy with the purchase. It has everything I want and although I have not tested it their site says it has full Linux support. I strongly recomend this.
That AskJesus thing is awesome! Not because of how it messes up the pages you go to but because it is basically a CGI Proxy server!
You see, at my school to get on the internet we need to go through a proxy server that filters out any websites that haven't been deemed "educationally valuable." This is most sites on the internet.
But with this thing, since it fetches the page for you (so it can alter the text) we could go through this to get around the proxy! I bet my programming teacher would be surprised to see us looking at, say playboy.com whilst it is in ye olde english speak!
Yeah, well, I heard that RMS called to make OSS OSS, and to prove that he is down with OPP, he and ODB are gonna mix some tunes with TLC and DMC using XMMS with ALSA in his BVD's.
I think this is great for the Linux community in general, cause it shows that we can make some phat tunes using only acronyms.

This law hurts children.

Actually, slashdot is a .com. Check out slashdot.com. The slashdot.org still remains for backwards compatability, so don't criticize.

heh. clickwrap my ass.

Thank you, Jesus!
There is going to be a BeOS crack hike in downtown L.A. this saturday. Be there and bring your pipes, it'll be fun!
I think asking the experts, which is what he did, is a VERY intelligent way of doing research. Din't criticize him for it, he did a SMART thing.
