  1. Re:The blurb misses something in the proposition. on Using Technology To Enforce Good Behavior · · Score: 1

I think it's not so much about wanting to stop the noise (although that extra impact helps), but to help prod you in the direction you've already decided you want to take.

If you sit down with a clear head, and plenty of time to think you can work out ways you can make your life better. One of these might be getting out of bed earlier. You sit down and think of all the ramifications, and decide that getting up early is the best thing for you to do. However, at 6 in the morning, getting up early doesn't seem like such a great idea. The alarm clock serves to remind you that you have thought it all through.

Sure it could go further to a state beyond what seems comfortable, but at this point helping people better themselves (and the world at large in many cases) is a good outcome.

That point was addressed in his first post. Basically if the chance of getting caught is low enough people perceive it as close enough to 0 to not worry about it. In that situation increasing the punishment doesn't work, so you'd need to look at the chance of getting caught to make a difference.

    No, they are "light trucks"

So SUVs are light *trucks* you say...

The point is the discontinuity between the CAFE standards and the licensing requirements. If you can drive them on a car license they should be subject to the CAFE standards for cars. If they are subject to the CAFE standards for trucks they should require a truck license.

We're not arguing about the way things are, we're arguing about the way they should be.

That's an interesting question. The whole idea is that any information available to the jurors is also available to the prosecution and the defense so they can argue about how valid it is and work out definitions etc. that everyone can agree upon. But jurors walk into the courtroom with their heads already full of information, biases and prejudices. I know that the screening process should weed out anyone with obvious bias. I'd assume that they'd also ask you some questions about how familiar you are with the matters at hand and possibly give you some special instructions based on what you already know.
