I think a good game should be like a good book or a good movie: good plot, interesting and life-like characters, no loose ends, etc. It's hard enough to achieve that in a book, where you have an in principle unlimited amount of pages, but in a game or a movie it's a mayor challange.
If gouvernments go OSS, that means eventually many schools will go OSS as well. We have many good public shcools here in Europe. If children are exposed to OSS at school, they are going to want it at home. Need I say more?
But, isn't what you describe just that: their being very good at making money? They made exactly the right decisions at the right time, and were able to convince people to do their liking. Never mind their shoddy product; they were geniuses!
That was my reason for securing my network. Another thing is: if you suddenly find yourself doing your banking over an insecure network, it can be too late. OTOH, the banking websites are usually encrypted. But I don't know how safe that is. Should I worry about this?
I have all three (linux, Windows and Mac). I like Mac OSX the most, because of the ease of use of the interface (although it takes a while getting used to and it is certainly not the best interface ever), and the Unix-like OS that controls it all and gives you almost unlimited possibilities in tweaking the computer to do what you want. Add to that the fantastic X11 program Apple adds with OSX and you have the most perfect computer system available today. I've used Linux for ten years but I'm now seriously thinking about transferring all my home-stuff to the Mac.
Certainly. Also keep in mind that Bill Gates et al. never intended to make good software. They saw an emerging market with a lot of potential and wanted to make mony fast. It just so happened that they were extremely good at it. The rest is history.
This is one of those articles that is written by someone who doesn't know what he's talking about, and who doesn't really have much to say. Pity I wasted my time reading it.
It was meant as a joke (I guess you got that). But in the olden days of Slashdot the MS-bashing was indeed a lot worse. But then again, that was before 2000, when they made really, really bad software...
That's fantastic, thanks for the info. I never use nightly builds so I guess I'll have to wait for the next `official' release. I thought it was an Apple problem (or feature).
Yes, you get the same menu you get when you hold the mouse button down long. Even the scrollwheel works. The only thing that doesn't work is the middle button, so in Firefox you have to right-click and then choose Open in new Tab to get your link in a new tab (as opposed to klicking the middle button in Linux and Windows). But, a three-butten wheel mouse really improves the Mac-experience!
Don't get me started! Instant RSI, that mouse will give you. I still have the G3 iMac (love it, pity it doesn't run Tiger) but I didn't know how fast to replace that mouse. I also replaced the keyboard because Apple keyboards are crap. For the rest, it's a pretty neat machine, not too slow considering the 266 MHz processor, 192 MB and OSX 10.3.9.
Lawyers live in an alien world. They make a great fuss about many things `normal' people (as far as they exist) will never even think about, let alone worry about, and they get paid enormous amounts of money for it too. They must be even more `out of this world' than your regular scientist.
Well said Mr. (or Mrs. or Ms)...

Offtopic I know, but may I compliment you on your fantastic website?

That's what I meant yes. But hey, gstoddar did a pretty decent job of descibing how they made that money.
Well, you know. They sold a lot of crap. They got rich and everyone lived happily ever after.

I can't get Firefox to open the file in TextEdit. Does anyone know how to do this? I'm on OSX 10.4.2, FF 1.0.6
Don't forget that in the days before IE, Netscape was the market leader and they defined the standard. Nobody cared about that then.

Cool! But there is a solution: just remove the whole Stock box.
I think this is pretty good. Where on the 'net do you find better M$ bashing than on Slashdot?

Oh come on! Before I was born there was nothing.
This gives me the creeps. Women are themselves scary enough, but a female robot?
I honestly promise to never do it again.
Geeks, scientists... what's the difference? :-)

Have you never heard the story about the old Intel processors used in the Space Shuttle?
