I heard that some schoolchildren in Holland seem to suffer from 'SMS-thumbs', just like normal people have mouse-arms. Strange because SMS is outrageously expensive in Holland...
That good old '64 did some calculations faster than a 8088. So I guess we're back in the eighties now. It's a shame that today you need a computer that is much faster than an '80s supercomputer, just to do some word processing or simple calculations...
All that in 13 MB! I installed Office 2000 the other day. I need only basic Excel and Word, without almost all the extra's. It was still 66 MB (without PowerPoint, web editing stuff, Outlook Express...). Why does it need to be sooo big!
Don't be so naive... I know quite a few Linux users who don't care much about security and have their boxes directly connected to the internet. I don't know anyone who reads all his/her e-mail as root, though.
In Europe, Bill only has Tony Blair in his pocket. And the British will always be different from the rest of Europe:-) So I think there's still hope. And besides, I live in Holland and I think the Dutch government is the 'greatest government in the world'.
That's all well and good, but I also find Windows really crappy and horrible to use. Let me give you two examples. In IE, you can browse websites as well as directories (as in any other browser). When browsing websites, clicking the right mouse button brings up a 'back' option. On some websites, you can click a link and move to a directory, of which you see the contents listed in the browser window. Clicking the right mouse button now brings up a totally different set of options (the same as when using Exploder), and NO 'back' button! That's very inconsistent and very hard to get used to, because it's never what you expect.
The other thing is the 'clicking in a window moves it to the top' option that you can not switch off. With TweakUI you can switch on the 'focus follows mouse' option, but still all windows pop up when you click on them, which makes focus follows mouse almost unusable in Windows.
In short, it's just not good enough. I can't even define all the colors I see on my screen. It's barely configurable. It's crap.
The way I see it, we need one GUI that is so highly configurable that everyone can change it to her liking. The way it handles programs is then standardized, while everyone can work in his favorite environment. That shouldn't be too hard to make, or is it? I am not a programmer so please enlighten me.
I think Microsoft will really be punished if they are forced to make all their 'standards' open. That will open up the market for real competition, not competition in Microsoft's terms.
It's been a while since I read the book (I saw the film again yesterday on BBC), but IIRC, in the book as well as in the film Ian is babbling about standing on the shoulders of giants, and the researchers having no respect for what they were doing because it took them very little efford, which in my opinion is utter BS. This Malcolm character seems to want us to invent the wheel over and over again. His presence made no sence in the book as well as in the movie. Well, that's what I think, anyway. But you're right, in the book he doesn't say that 'life will find a way'.
I think this is not a good idea. People will get into their cars with a false sense of security (my car will keep me awake). People who drive cars with ABS also tend to drive closer to the car in front of them, and take more risks because their car 'can stop at once if necessary'.

What's so huge about that? If I click on a .exe file using IE, it also starts automagically. I don't understand what all the fuss is about.

I had the opposite actually. On Wednesday morning I decided not to watch TV at all that day. I couldn't handle it anymore...
That could very well be, I never understood this Reply thingy in /.. Maybe it's because I always read /. using lynx.
I always forward mail for root to my 'normal' account. That way you never have to read mail as root.

Ha ha. Maybe you're right, but I use fvwm2 and I like it, so I won't bother trying something else.

Can't you just rip it like a CD?
You should watch more movies.
If I were Palm I would sue the court for slander. They should be much more specific!
Pity I can not program computers. This looks like a nice challenge.

So you can also add an icon called: 'Remove Microsoft MSN access icon'
In the second book the islands are totally destroyed by bombarding them.

He can't really help it. His characted sucks, in the movie as well as in the book. I never understood why he was around.
I live in Europe and I can't wait to see this movie. It must be so bad it's funny. I sure hope it's worse than Jurassic Parc II!
Dmitri can hardly be called a communist, given the fact that he works for a for-profit company.
Microsoft has to take precautions against cancer... :-(
