Good point about the resolving power. 30 nm is not bad for a cheap machine like that, I think. And I didn't even know it runs Linux, although I don't see the problem with the Hitachi running XP. You don't want such a thing connected to a network anyway.
FEI has a much better one that can do 24000X max. At 70000 it's a bit more expensive than the Hitachi but then you have soemthing you can really work with. Trust me, 10000X is not nearly enough to see anything interesting:). I saw a demonstration of one of those at a conference once. I wish I had the money to get one of those things for myself.
You know, the iPhone is old stuff. The new phones with Android and especially Maemo will soon surpass it in usability and features. The Maemo browser is something terrific: Mozilla-based, and just as functional as a desktop browser. check out this impressive demo. BTW, I'm not in any way affiliated with Nokia. I'm just very enthousiastic about the Nokia N900. Finally something that blows the iPhone away!
Thank you from all people who are not so lucky as to be perfectly healthy. I was born with a heart condition. Although I have a Ph.D. I am forced to work 4 days a week in a relatively easy job that doesn't pay very well (I'm a researcher at a university). I need regular checkups, medication, and sometimes a medical procedure. A friend of mine who is also from the Netherlands but has been living in the US for the past 6 years told me that if I was born in the US I would most probably have DIED long ago, thanks to the virtually non-existant heath care system over there. So please before you spew any more of your extreme capitalist crap try to think of other people who aren't as lucky as you are. But I guess by the total contempt you show for people who aren't as rich as you or haven't made it as far in the world as you did that will be near impossible for a self-centered arrogant person like you.
I have Windows on my Macs so I can run games on them. That is the only thing I use Windows for. If I couldn't afford the Macs I would have bought normal PCs and ran Linux on it, together with Windows for the games.
A bit off-topic, I know, but what has been the result for Apple of removing DRM from the iTunes store? How much more did they sell? And what if the result had been negative, would they have gone back to the old DRM'd scheme?
Of course you are right but that's not what I meant. The people I used as examples (the unemployment office worker and the doctor) have to deal with very smart as well as very stupid people. They will have a less skewed view of the 'real world' than professionals like you and me.
Nobody, not even Bill Gates Likes windows, no person on this planet can honestly say..
"Windows? It's fantastic! I love it, I love how it works, it's perfect in every way!"
Seriously,I heard people say this from the bottom of their heart and mean it. They had just started an 'internet company' back in 1996. The company still exists, and, as far as I can gather from the website, still uses only MS software.
But you most probably don't have any 'real world' experience. No professional who is not dealing with all kinds of people has. Therefore, you have a skewed view of the world. That is not meant as insulting or making a fool of you, it's just the way it is. Most people here on/. deal daily with people who are about as smart as they are. But only when you have to deal with, for instance, people who need unemployment money, or with patients, who come from all layers of society, can you understand the intelligence level of the average person.
There is. Most people in the real world don't even know what an operating system is, and that your average appliance uses software to do the things it's supposed to do. Bothering them with that only confuses them.
I am jobless at the moment, and the most difficult thing about that is keeping yourself busy. In today's crisis, job-searching isn't a full-time occupation, so there is plenty of time to do other things. The problem is: most of these things can be done tomorrow. So I really have to force myself to do them today. When you work, most of the time someone is waiting for the results of your labour, which is very motivating. So I'd rather work on than 'enjoy' my pension when I'm 65 and still healthy enough to work.
It's amazing how strong many scientists believe in certain things that are not even theories, and have a hard time changing their minds in the face of evidence to the contrary. We saw it with 'junk DNA' (long strands of DNA between genes that apparently had no purpose, so scientists decided it must be junk left over from evolution), stem cells, and now the dogma that certain types of tissue can't regenerate. Luckily they are proven wrong time and time again, which keeps biology exciting and opens new possibilities in medicine and health care.
I have a Mac. I only use Windows for games. I absolutely loathand abhore viruscheckers but to use Windows in a production environment you just have to use them. So Windows is no option for a production environment.
Actually, as the article says, you can make electron orbitals visible with AFM for atoms in a crystal or other structure. This is the first time orbitals of a single, lone atom have been resolved. Very cool stuff, this.

That's 70000 euros. Bloody hell /., when are you going to go with the times and use a correct character set?

That was by far his worst book. What a load of nonsense.
I think 'to pee or not to pee' is a more relevant question.
I have Windows on my Macs so I can run games on them. That is the only thing I use Windows for. If I couldn't afford the Macs I would have bought normal PCs and ran Linux on it, together with Windows for the games.
I just tell them I know nothing about Windows, because I haven't run Windows for anything but games since 1996. That usullally helps.
So now you're buggy!
A bit off-topic, I know, but what has been the result for Apple of removing DRM from the iTunes store? How much more did they sell? And what if the result had been negative, would they have gone back to the old DRM'd scheme?
I never heard of anyone ending a friendship over an operating system. I'm glad I don't have you as a friend.

And while you're at it, I just bought this amazing game in the shop, but I can't get it installed for some reason. Can you fix that for me?
There is. Most people in the real world don't even know what an operating system is, and that your average appliance uses software to do the things it's supposed to do. Bothering them with that only confuses them.
It all depends on your personal situation.
I am jobless at the moment, and the most difficult thing about that is keeping yourself busy. Yeah but first take copious amounts of any drugs you can find. It makes the song so much better.
I had hoped the iPhone was old by now but no, the hype continues on. The Force is strong in this one.

Why didn't he just email them and ask them either not to use his pictures, or to pay him for them?
Why didn't he just put the pictures on his website as examples of how NOT to use his texture?
