    Let supply and demand sort it out. The really gifted kids will be drawn to science no matter the financial rewards. The lab cogs will come back once the pay and opportunities increase.

    We already have highly selective scientific posts - they're at the best universities and research institutions. I don't see how the author thinks that adding a few more would make much of a difference. The best of the best still get good jobs, and there's still a lot of jobs at 2nd & 3rd tier universities.

    I worked for a company that had a project group. Although I worked in a different division, I won't let that stop me from making broad generalizations.

    I think there is another group of companies out there: Those that can manage well some of the time. Just enough to be able to sign on the dotted line, that is. The company I worked for was able to codify all of the requirements into contract form, so whenever the client started acting all goofy we only had to pull out the "Sure we can do that, we'll have our lawyer start amending the contract!" card. That goes a long way in reining in squirreliness.

    Of course, that group had the hardest time making any money.

    Except that they didn't know it was crap. It was off-balance sheet debt in the case of Enron. Investors were none the wiser. There was no way they could know unless they were high up in the chain of command at Enron.

    No, personal finance wasn't taught in my school, nor is it taught in the majority of schools. You were lucky. I picked up bad money management skills from my parents. It wasn't until I was already tens of thousands into debt from college loans that I stumbled onto _Personal Finance for Dummies_. Don't laugh. Now I'm paying double the required payments and I don't buy anything on credit. Wish I would have found that book sooner though.

    And you have to have apprenticed for a period of several years under another licensed engineer.

    Its simple. If you standardize across a platform, any programming or maintenance work becomes just that much easier. Need to write a new fubar script? Well, would you rather write it for 1 platform or 10? Would you rather debug 1 platform or 10? etc... etc... etc...

    Can't we add an age/experience limit to the ask /. questions?

    Not law, but I'm enrolled in a part time MBA program & plan to concentrate in finance. Pretty much the same reasons. That, and I'm always looking for a new challenge.
